To set up multi-factor authentication (MFA), first identify who manages the sign-in for your cloud console, then enroll an allowed second factor in that identity provider’s official security settings and test it before relying on it. Prefer a passkey or FIDO2 security key when supported; add a backup method and confirm your recovery contact details so losing a phone or key does not lock you out.
Start with the identity that signs you in
A cloud console may authenticate with a provider-managed personal account, a work or school identity, or an external identity provider (IdP). That identity owner—not necessarily the cloud console itself—determines where MFA is configured and which methods are permitted.
- Identify the account shown on the console sign-in page. For a work account, ask whether sign-in is managed by the cloud vendor, Microsoft Entra, Google Workspace or Cloud Identity, or a federated IdP.
- If the account belongs to an organization, check with its administrator before changing sign-in settings. An administrator may need to enable MFA or allow a particular method.
- Open the identity provider’s official security or identity settings, or follow its MFA enrollment prompt. Choose an allowed method and complete the verification step; selecting a method alone does not register it.
- Enroll a backup device or factor if the service allows it. Check that the recovery email and phone number are current, and store recovery information somewhere protected.
- Use a safe separate session or sign out and sign back in to verify the new factor works. In a managed environment, follow the organization’s test procedure rather than risking access to your only working session.
Choose a method that fits the account
Provider support and organizational policy take precedence over general advice. In general, a passkey or FIDO2 security key is the strongest practical choice when available, particularly for privileged accounts. Microsoft identifies FIDO2 security keys, passkeys, Windows Hello for Business, and certificate-based authentication as phishing-resistant methods in its authentication-method guidance.
| Method | Security and convenience | Recovery and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey or FIDO2 security key | Phishing-resistant. A hardware key requires possession and compatible hardware/browser; a synced passkey relies on a supported credential manager. | Register a second key or another permitted factor where possible. Confirm provider, device, browser, and organization compatibility before buying a key. |
| Authenticator app | A common option where the provider and organization permit it; it requires access to the app. | Plan for device loss. Enable the app’s backup or sync feature where available, and register another allowed method. |
| Provider prompt | Convenient when supported, such as Google Prompts or an organization-approved Microsoft Authenticator flow. | Availability and prompt frequency depend on identity policy and enrolled devices. |
| SMS or voice call | Some providers or policies offer these options; they are not as strong a default as phishing-resistant methods. | Use a stronger supported method for privileged accounts where practical, and keep recovery contact details current. |
A physical FIDO2 key is optional: an authenticator app may be a no-cost alternative. AWS documents YubiKey 5 Series as one example of a supported configuration, but check compatibility with your exact account, browser, operating system, and organization policy before purchasing.

Set up MFA in AWS
AWS supports MFA for root users, IAM users, IAM Identity Center users, and other identity types. IAM Identity Center has MFA enabled by default, according to AWS. AWS also says every AWS account type must configure root-user MFA; if it is not already enabled, the root user must register MFA within 35 days of the first sign-in attempt to access the Management Console. Confirm that you can access the root account’s email and phone before enrollment so you retain a recovery route.
Register a passkey or security key for an IAM user
- Sign in to the IAM console as the relevant IAM user.
- Open Security credentials.
- Choose Assign MFA device.
- Select Passkey or Security Key, then follow the browser’s setup flow and complete its verification.
AWS supports virtual authenticator applications and hardware TOTP tokens for root users as well. AWS permits up to eight supported MFA devices per root user or IAM user and recommends registering multiple devices—for example, a built-in authenticator and a separately stored key. For details on device types, enrollment, and root recovery, see AWS’s MFA documentation and root-user MFA guidance.

Set up 2-Step Verification for Google Cloud
Google calls MFA 2-Step Verification (2SV). For a personal Google Account, open the Security tab in Google Account settings and enable 2-Step Verification by following the prompts. Personal Google Accounts used as Google Cloud principals are covered by the listed requirement on or after May 12, 2025.
For enterprise accounts, the timeline depends on account and organization type. Google’s current schedule lists a start on or after October 20, 2026, for enterprise Cloud Identity accounts not using SSO in organizations created before August 3, 2026; organizations created on or after August 3, 2026, have a requirement 30 days after creation. Timing for federated enterprise accounts is listed as “To be announced.” Check Google’s current 2SV requirement and schedule, since rollout dates can change.

The stated requirement covers the Google Cloud console and Firebase console. Google Workspace has a separate 2SV requirement, and workloads and data-plane applications are not themselves subject to this console requirement. For personal accounts and enterprise accounts using Google as the IdP, available additional factors can include authenticator apps, Google Prompts, physical security keys, and SMS codes. If the setting is missing, an administrator may have disabled it. An account with passkeys still needs to enable 2SV and add an authentication factor under Google’s documented Cloud requirement.
Set up MFA for Microsoft Entra or Microsoft 365 work accounts
For Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, an administrator must enable MFA before users can register. When prompted, sign in and follow the organization’s enrollment flow, choosing an approved method. Options can include Microsoft Authenticator, Authenticator Lite in Outlook, passkeys, Windows Hello for Business, SMS, voice calls, and hardware or software tokens; the organization controls which are available.

Microsoft can configure MFA through security defaults, per-user MFA state, or Conditional Access, and these approaches behave differently. Security defaults challenge administrators and require Microsoft Authenticator challenges for users. Per-user MFA requires verification at every sign-in and overrides Conditional Access policies. Conditional Access offers more flexibility but is a premium Entra feature; risk-based policies require Entra ID P2 licensing. See Microsoft’s Conditional Access guidance and security defaults documentation for policy details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For administrators: protect emergency access
Do not treat emergency access accounts as ordinary user accounts with a different label. Microsoft recommends maintaining at least two cloud-only emergency access accounts, using authentication methods different from normal administrator methods, storing them safely, and excluding them from blocking Conditional Access policies when needed for emergency usability. Monitor and validate that they work at least every 90 days, following Microsoft’s emergency access account guidance. Test the organization’s emergency process without disrupting normal user access.

If a method is missing or you lose your device
- The method you want is not offered: The account type, device or browser support, or organization policy may explain why. For a work account, ask the administrator which methods are allowed; do not try to bypass policy.
- Your authenticator phone is lost: Use a previously registered backup factor or the provider’s official account-recovery process. For AWS root recovery, AWS advises verifying access to the account email and phone before enrollment. For a Microsoft work or school account, contact the IT administrator if no registered method is accessible.
- Your AWS FIDO key is lost: AWS says to deactivate the old authenticator before adding a replacement. If a new key is unavailable, a virtual MFA device or hardware TOTP token can be enrolled where supported.
- You are an administrator locked out of a managed account: Use the organization’s documented emergency-access process. Emergency arrangements should be monitored and periodically tested, not improvised during an incident.
For provider-specific recovery steps, use the official AWS MFA guidance, Google Account 2-Step Verification help, or Microsoft work or school account sign-in guidance.
