InitializeSandbox() called with multiple threads in process gpu-process does not, by itself, show that a dataframe_image export failed. In the matching Ubuntu 20.04 report, the warning appeared before a “Written to file” message. The author also reported intermittent memory exhaustion, but did not establish that the warning caused it. First verify the export result and process exit status; then investigate the specific failure you observe.
Does the warning mean the dataframe_image export failed?
Not necessarily. The Ubuntu 20.04 report used dfi.export(df,'image.png') and showed the GPU-process sandbox warning followed by a message that the PNG had been written. That run is evidence that the warning can appear even when an output file is produced; it is not proof that every export will succeed.
Check whether the expected file exists, whether it has plausible nonzero size, and whether the Python process exits successfully. If those checks pass, treat the warning as a log message unless you have another symptom. If the file is missing, empty, incomplete, or the process exits with an error, diagnose that failure separately rather than assuming the warning is its cause.
Separate the warning from the other symptoms
- Export failure: The expected image was not created or is unusable, or the Python process returned an error.
- Browser startup failure: Chrome or Chromium does not launch, or its renderer exits.
- Memory exhaustion: The process’s memory use grows and it is eventually killed. The matching report mentions this intermittently but includes no measurements or demonstrated cause.
These can occur together, but the available report does not show that one causes another. Chromium’s Linux sandbox engineering write-up includes the same multiple-threads warning in an example where Chromium launches; it distinguishes that from a fatal “No usable sandbox!” startup error. The warning text alone therefore should not be treated as confirmation of a fatal sandbox failure. Chromium sandbox design

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Work through the failure methodically
- Verify the output and exit status. Check for the file at the path passed to
dfi.export, inspect its size, and record the shell or job’s exit code. This determines whether the reported warning is the only issue. - Record the execution details. Note the exact Chrome or Chromium version,
dataframe_imageversion, Python invocation, runtime user, and whether the job runs on a VPS or inside a container. These details are needed to distinguish environment-specific browser problems; the matching report does not establish a universal version-specific repair. - Identify which process fails. Capture the surrounding Chrome output and Python traceback, if any. Establish whether Chrome fails to start, the export fails after startup, or the process is killed later.
- If memory grows, measure it independently. Record peak process memory, the VPS or container memory limit, the number of exports, and whether multiple workers run concurrently. These are useful diagnostic checks, not a proven explanation for the warning.
- Change one variable at a time. After recording the baseline, test a controlled environment or version change and compare the output, exit status, browser startup, and memory use. Avoid treating a change as a fix unless it resolves the symptom you measured.
Should you add Selenium flags or disable the sandbox?
The original author said they tried Selenium options --headless, --no-sandbox, and --disable-gpu, and the warning remained. That individual report does not show that these flags are an effective repair for dataframe_image.
Do not add --no-sandbox casually. Disabling the browser sandbox changes a security boundary, and the Chromium write-up discusses it as a risky workaround for a different fatal “No usable sandbox!” condition—not as a fix for this warning. First establish that your actual problem is sandbox startup failure, and follow the security requirements for your deployment environment rather than disabling protections merely to silence a log line.

What about downgrading Chrome or deleting its profile?
In a comment dated January 8, 2022, the question author said that downgrading Chrome to version 88 solved their case. This is a historical, single-user report, not a current recommendation to install Chrome 88 or evidence that downgrading will fix another environment. The report does not identify a generally supported browser version for Ubuntu 20.04.
A separate Ask Ubuntu discussion concerns Chrome failing to open and describes a user reporting success after deleting ~/.config/google-chrome. That is a different Chrome-launch case, not a demonstrated dataframe_image repair. Deleting a browser profile can remove local profile state, so do not use it as a routine response to this warning. Is the InitializeSandbox message always harmless?
No. The message alone does not establish whether a particular browser run succeeded. Check the export output, process status, and any separate browser or Python errors.

Did downgrading Chrome to version 88 fix the reported case?
The question author said it did in a comment dated January 8, 2022. That is a historical individual report, not a current version recommendation.
