If you like Fortnite Zero Build because it trades construction for aim, movement and positioning, start with Apex Legends for squad-based battle royale, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS for a drop-loot-survive format, or Call of Duty: Warzone if teammate redeployment sounds appealing. None plays exactly like Zero Build: each has its own movement, defenses and match rhythm.
What makes a game feel like Fortnite Zero Build?
Epic defines Zero Build as “A no-build game where players focus on sharpshooting and quick reactions without any in-game building.” In other words, the appeal is battle-royale pressure without constructing defenses mid-fight. Fortnite also gives players sprinting and climbing as movement options, while Zero Build provides a recharging Overshield as an initial defensive layer. Those details help explain what a player might want to keep, but they are not a template the alternatives reproduce.
Choose by the part of the experience you value most: coordinated squads, a survival-and-looting loop, or a way for eliminated teammates to return. Official descriptions establish those game features; they do not establish a head-to-head quality ranking.
Which no-building battle royale should you try?

Apex Legends: choose it for squad battle royale
Apex is the clearest first stop if the main thing you want from Zero Build is a squad trying to outlast other teams. EA describes its Battle Royale mode as last-squad-standing and also lists Mixtape among the available modes. That makes Apex a useful choice if you want a battle-royale focus with another mode option when you want a change.

The official modes description does not establish that Apex shares Fortnite’s movement, defensive systems, difficulty or pace. Think of it as a match for the squad-battle-royale preference, not a mechanical substitute.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS: choose it for looting and survival
PUBG’s official overview describes a 100-player battle royale that begins with a transport-plane drop. Players loot, can use vehicles and must contend with a shrinking Blue Zone that damages anyone who stays outside it. The overview lists Solo, Duo and Squad options as well as a training mode, so it suits players who want flexibility in group size alongside the survival loop.

The 100-player figure is PUBG’s stated setup, not a comparison of active populations across these games. The overview does not establish how PUBG feels relative to Fortnite in realism or pacing, so choose it for the specific drop, loot and zone structure rather than an assumed similarity.

Warzone: choose it for teammate redeployment
Warzone’s official page lists Battle Royale and Resurgence. The latter offers a particular squad-friendly distinction: fallen teammates can redeploy, and players can earn score to bring them back faster. That gives squads a route back into a match after elimination rather than making every knockout the end of a teammate’s participation.

Warzone’s page describes an “ever-shifting lineup,” so mode names, maps and availability can change. Check the current official listing before choosing based on a particular playlist.
How should you decide?
- Want squads and a last-team-standing objective? Try Apex Legends.
- Want solo, duo or squad play around dropping in, looting and surviving the zone? Try PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
- Want a squad mode that can bring eliminated teammates back? Look at Warzone’s Resurgence listing.
Also check the current platform and input support for the game and device you plan to use. The cited mode and overview pages do not provide a complete, comparable platform list for all three recommendations, so confirm compatibility on each publisher’s current platform page before installing. PUBG’s June 16, 2026 Update 42.1 announcement says controller support was added to its PC version, but specifically excludes PlayStation DualSense and DualShock controllers; that update does not establish compatibility across other games or platforms.

What to know about access and cost
Warzone’s official page calls the experience free to play. PUBG’s January 12, 2022 free-to-play transition announcement described a free Basic account for new players and an optional BATTLEGROUNDS Plus upgrade with additional features. Because that PUBG policy statement is historical, check the current store listing and account terms rather than relying on old upgrade pricing or assuming its terms have not changed.
Epic’s official Zero Build documentation defines the mode. Its Fortnite store listing describes available modes and movement options, and its Zero Build announcement explains the Overshield. EA’s Apex Legends modes page, PUBG’s game overview and January 2022 free-to-play announcement, and the official Warzone page describe the modes and features covered here. PUBG’s Update 42.1 announcement, dated June 16, 2026, covers its PC controller support.
