Use Proton for Windows games you launch through Steam on Linux or Steam Deck; use Wine for Windows applications outside Steam. Proton is built on Wine, but Valve packages it for Steam gaming and connects it to Steam’s compatibility settings. Neither tool guarantees that a particular game or program will work, so check compatibility for the exact title before relying on it.
Wine and Proton: what’s the difference?
Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows applications on POSIX-compliant systems, including Linux, macOS, and BSD. Rather than running a copy of Windows in a virtual machine or acting as an emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls. Its purpose is broad Windows-application compatibility. WineHQ
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows-exclusive games through the Steam client on Linux. It is based on Wine and adds components and integration aimed at gaming. Which should you use?
For a Steam game on Linux
Start with the Proton version offered by Steam. Valve says most users should use the version supplied by Steam rather than a local build. Steam also provides version selection and per-game settings, so you can change the compatibility tool if a title needs troubleshooting. That flexibility is not a promise that every game will run. For a Windows game on Steam Deck
Proton is the usual starting point for Windows games on Steam Deck: SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve identifies Proton as its Windows-game compatibility layer. The Deck’s booklet describes the device and its software environment. Steam Deck booklet Valve Proton repository
For a Windows application outside Steam

What to check before committing to either tool
- Check the exact application or game. Compatibility varies by title; success with one program does not establish that another will work.
- Confirm your platform and distribution. Wine supports POSIX systems, but the exact setup depends on the system. Valve directs Proton users to their distribution’s setup documentation. Valve Proton repository
- For Steam games, begin with Steam’s supplied Proton. Try other compatibility versions or per-game settings only when needed.
- For a stubborn Proton game, treat the version and launch configuration as troubleshooting variables. Valve documents per-game launch options and runtime overrides, including an example that selects OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. Bottom line: choose by what you’re running
Proton is the straightforward choice for Steam games on Linux or Steam Deck; Wine is the broader starting point for Windows programs outside Steam. Because Proton is based on Wine, this is less a choice between unrelated technologies than a choice between Wine’s general-purpose approach and Valve’s Steam-focused gaming package.
