Take a screenshot with Chrome DevTools
Capture a selected area
- Open DevTools. In Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+P; on Mac, press Cmd+Shift+P to open the Command Menu.
- Type screenshot, then choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the page to select the region you want to save.
Chrome’s Command Menu documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. If the command fails, dock DevTools and try again. See Chrome’s Command Menu documentation.
Capture the visible viewport
- Open DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Select Capture screenshot to save what is currently visible in the page viewport.
Capture the full page
- Open DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot. This captures page content beyond the visible viewport.
Device Mode can also include a device frame if you enable the frame before capturing. For the current Device Mode workflow, see Chrome’s Device Mode documentation. Menu names and locations can change between browser versions; Chrome’s Command Menu page was last updated on 2024-09-04.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Chrome’s area capture command does not work: the documented area workflow does not work with DevTools undocked. Dock DevTools, reopen the Command Menu, and run Capture area screenshot again.
- You got only the visible portion of the page: use Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode’s More options menu rather than Capture screenshot.
- The Firefox full-page button is missing: enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons in Developer Tools settings.
- Firefox captured the wrong thing: select the intended node in the Inspector’s HTML pane, then use that node’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- You cannot find a command named in this guide: browser UI is version-sensitive. Check the relevant Chrome or Mozilla documentation for the browser version you have installed.
