What can an old Android phone run?
It can run Android apps compatible with the phone’s operating-system version and device features. Whether a particular app is available or works also depends on its requirements and the handset’s condition. Android Developers explains that app distribution can filter devices by platform version, hardware features, and screen configuration; Android’s compatibility documentation says, “Each device must pass the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) to be considered compatible.” Android compatibility documentation
Android apps
Check the app’s required Android version and features against the phone’s specifications. Without the handset’s make, model, and Android version, compatibility for a particular app cannot be determined.
Terminal tools with Termux
Termux provides a terminal emulator and Linux environment for shell commands and documented packages, including Node.js and Git. It can be useful for simple command-line tasks, but it does not turn the phone into a general desktop Linux computer: not every Linux desktop application or hardware interface will work. Phone hardware
The screen, battery, camera, and sensors may suit projects that benefit from mobile-device hardware. Access depends on the specific phone and the software APIs available to the app. Do not assume an Android phone offers arbitrary Raspberry Pi-style GPIO access.
What can a Raspberry Pi run?
A Raspberry Pi can run Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian-based operating system with desktop and command-line editions. Raspberry Pi says the system supports over 69,000 Debian packages. That package base makes the Pi a more direct choice when instructions or software expect Raspberry Pi OS, Debian packages, or a Linux computer. Raspberry Pi OS documentation

Desktop, Full, and Lite editions
- Desktop: Includes a graphical desktop and applications such as browsers, VLC, and Thonny.
- Full: Adds software including LibreOffice, KiCad, and Scratch.
- Lite: Has no graphical desktop and is intended for command-line and headless use.

32-bit or 64-bit
Raspberry Pi OS is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Choose an image compatible with the processor architecture of the specific board; Raspberry Pi’s board guidance details architecture support. Raspberry Pi processor documentation

How to choose for your project

Raw performance is not a useful deciding factor without the phone and Pi models and measurements for the particular workload. A project-specific compatibility check is more informative than comparing the categories in the abstract.
What setup does each option require?
Prepare the phone
- Identify the phone’s make, model, Android version, and condition.
- Check the app’s platform-version and feature requirements before relying on it.
- For Termux, confirm that the needed tool is documented for its environment; grant storage permission only if the task needs shared-storage access.
- Do not assume an old phone still receives security updates: support status depends on the specific device and is not established by the information here.
Prepare a Raspberry Pi
- Choose the Pi board and a compatible Raspberry Pi OS image, selecting 32-bit or 64-bit according to the processor architecture.
- Prepare boot media for the chosen edition. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB for Desktop and Full, or 8 GB for Lite.
- For a desktop setup, plan for a monitor, a model-appropriate cable, keyboard, and mouse. A headless setup can be configured with another networked computer.
- Check the chosen board’s peripheral requirements. Some models need specific adapters or powered USB hubs.
Raspberry Pi’s board and setup guidance should be checked for the selected model, since port and peripheral needs vary. Raspberry Pi setup documentation

Can an Android phone replace a Raspberry Pi?
For a compatible Android app, phone-based task, or selected Termux command-line job, an old phone may be enough. It is not a general replacement when a project specifically needs Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian package workflow, a headless Pi setup, or the board’s physical interfaces. The right answer for a particular project depends on the phone model and Android version, the Pi model, and the software and connections the project requires.
