The best VS Code setup for multiple projects is not one universal settings.json. Put personal preferences in User settings, repository conventions in that project’s workspace settings, and shared behavior for related roots in a multi-root workspace. Use Profiles for different kinds of work and Settings Sync to carry selected user configuration between installations.

Which VS Code settings should you use for multiple projects?

Choose a setting’s scope by asking who needs it and where it should apply. A personal preference belongs to you; a convention collaborators need belongs with the project. If several related folders need to work together in one window, a multi-root workspace can hold shared settings while individual roots keep supported resource-specific settings.

Choice Best for What it governs Main limitation
User settings Preferences you want across projects Personal defaults across VS Code instances Workspace and folder settings can override them. Visual Studio Code settings documentation
Single-folder workspace One repository as the active unit Project settings in .vscode/settings.json It does not group multiple roots into one workspace. Settings documentation; Workspaces documentation
Multi-root workspace Several related folders used together Shared workspace settings plus supported folder-specific settings Folder settings are limited to resource settings; editor-wide preferences are shared. Multi-root workspaces documentation
Profile Distinct personal setups for roles, languages, or tasks User settings and extensions for a work context It does not replace repository settings; profile syncing is configured separately. Profiles documentation
Settings Sync Selected user configuration across installations Categories such as settings, keybindings, extensions, and profiles, depending on selection Extensions are not synchronized to or from SSH, dev container, or WSL remote windows. Settings Sync documentation

For common daily use, keep preferences such as font size, whitespace display, or personal navigation choices in User settings if you want them to follow you. Put shared project conventions—such as exclusions or language-specific behavior—in project settings. Keep personal or machine-specific values out of configuration intended for collaborators.

Where do settings live, and which scope wins?

User settings apply across VS Code instances for your account. Workspace settings apply to the opened folder or workspace, and folder settings can specialize a root in a multi-root workspace. Where a setting applies at more than one scope, workspace or folder configuration takes precedence over the User value.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Folder workspace: project settings are stored in .vscode/settings.json.
  • Multi-root workspace: shared workspace settings are stored in the .code-workspace file. Supported folder-level settings can live in each root’s .vscode/settings.json.
  • Profile: the profile holds user customizations and extensions for a particular work context, rather than repository rules.

Use the Settings editor’s User, Workspace, and, where available, Folder tabs to inspect the active scope and setting descriptions. Setting names and availability depend on VS Code version and installed extensions, so use the editor’s search and completion rather than copying a long, supposedly universal configuration.

When is a multi-root workspace better than opening one folder?

A multi-root workspace is useful when several related folders form one working set—for example, application source and its documentation—or when you need roots that are not siblings on disk in a single window. A regular folder workspace is simpler when one repository is the whole task. See Microsoft’s workspace documentation and multi-root workspace guide.

Create a persistent multi-root workspace

  1. Open a folder in VS Code, then choose File > Add Folder to Workspace and select another root.
  2. When the working set is assembled, save it as a .code-workspace file. Open that file later to restore the named workspace.
  3. Put settings shared by the group under the file’s "settings" key. Put supported resource-specific settings in a root’s .vscode/settings.json.

Folder-level settings in a multi-root workspace are restricted to resource settings. They can govern behavior tied to files or resources in that root, but not editor-wide interface preferences such as zoom. Those preferences are shared rather than independently imposed per root.

How should you divide shared settings and root-specific behavior?

Use the workspace file for rules that genuinely apply to all roots in the working set. Use a root’s settings file when that root needs different supported resource behavior—for example, because its language or file conventions differ. Keep a value in User settings if it reflects your own comfort rather than a team convention.

A minimal illustrative multi-root workspace might look like this:

{
  "folders": [
    { "path": "app" },
    { "path": "docs" }
  ],
  "settings": {
    "files.exclude": {
      "**/.cache": true
    }
  }
}

This is a structural example, not a recommended universal setting: choose actual keys and values in the Settings editor, and confirm that a setting is supported at the scope where you want to use it. A single-project repository can instead store project choices in .vscode/settings.json.

When should you use Profiles instead of project settings?

Use a Profile when your own VS Code setup should change with your role, language, or task—for instance, when you want different user customizations or extensions for separate kinds of work. Profiles can be selected in a new window, exported, or synchronized when the Profiles category is enabled in Settings Sync. Microsoft describes the feature in its Profiles documentation.

A profile is not a substitute for repository configuration. If collaborators need a convention, keep it in the project workspace so they can use it without adopting your personal profile.

How can you synchronize settings across devices?

Turn on Settings Sync and select the categories you want to carry between VS Code installations. You can choose what to synchronize and exclude; available categories include settings, keybindings, extensions, and profiles, depending on your selection. The feature synchronizes selected user configuration, not project context, so commit shared workspace files or repository settings separately. Follow Microsoft’s Settings Sync documentation for current controls.

There is an important remote-window exception: extensions are not synchronized to or from remote windows such as SSH, dev containers, or WSL. When a setting or extension appears inconsistent, check whether it belongs to the local VS Code installation or the remote environment before troubleshooting.

How should you handle settings in an unfamiliar repository?

Keep an unfamiliar folder in Restricted Mode while you assess its source and contents. Workspace Trust limits features that can execute project code. In a trusted multi-root workspace, adding an unfamiliar folder prompts you; if it is not trusted, VS Code can switch the overall workspace to Restricted Mode.

Microsoft’s Workspace Trust guidance says: “When in doubt, leave a folder in Restricted Mode. You can always enable trust later.” See the Workspace Trust documentation. Trust a folder only after deciding its source is safe.

A quick decision framework

  • Only you should receive the preference: use User settings.
  • Every collaborator on one repository needs the convention: use that repository’s workspace settings.
  • Several related roots need one window and shared behavior: use a multi-root .code-workspace, with supported folder settings for root-specific resource behavior.
  • Your setup changes by role or task: use Profiles for your user customization and extensions.
  • You need selected configuration on another installation: enable Settings Sync for the categories you want.
  • The repository is unfamiliar: leave it restricted until you have assessed whether it is safe to trust.
