Android does not guarantee that a phone will recognize Hindi and English mixed within the same spoken sentence. Its speech-recognition API offers optional language-detection and switching controls, but support depends on the recognition service. Google’s published Pixel Gboard language list does not include Hindi, while Google’s ML Kit lists Hindi speech recognition as beta without promising Hinglish accuracy.

What “Hindi-English code-switching” means

Code-switching is the use of two languages within a sentence or discourse, as defined by the authors of the Hindi-English Code-Switching Speech Corpus. Recognizing Hindi in one utterance and English in the next is not the same as transcribing both languages interleaved in one utterance. A feature that detects or switches languages does not, by itself, establish support for mixed Hindi-English speech.

The distinction matters because Hindi-English code-switched speech has been studied as a separate speech-recognition challenge. A dedicated corpus was created to support work on this task and reflects variation in speakers, sessions, pronunciation, accents, age, and gender. That research context does not establish how well a particular Android phone or keyboard handles Hinglish.

How Android’s speech-recognition API handles languages

Android apps can send a language tag, such as an IETF/BCP 47 tag, through RecognizerIntent.EXTRA_LANGUAGE. On API level 34, the platform also defines optional language-detection and language-switch controls. These are requests to the recognition implementation, not a guarantee that a particular provider will support them; Android’s RecognizerIntent API reference warns that some extras may have no effect depending on the implementation.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Language switching and downloaded models

An app can limit automatic switching to allowed language tags with EXTRA_LANGUAGE_SWITCH_ALLOWED_LANGUAGES. Android says the relevant language models must be downloaded for switching; if a switch cannot be completed, the recognizer can report an error. Model availability and provider behavior therefore affect what happens in practice.

Switch sensitivity settings

  • high_precision waits for a highly confident detection before switching.
  • balanced waits for a confident detection.
  • quick_response allows switching at a lower confidence level so it can happen earlier.

These settings describe the API’s intended sensitivity trade-offs. They are not promises of accurate Hindi-English transcription across Android devices or recognition services.

What Google’s Pixel Gboard feature supports

Google’s consumer instructions say advanced voice typing can automatically detect multiple languages on Pixel 6 and later. The published list is English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish—not Hindi. That list is the relevant published support boundary for this particular Gboard feature; it should not be read as a promise of automatic Hindi-English voice typing. See Google’s advanced voice typing guidance for its current instructions.

For supported languages, Google says automatic detection is on by default. Users can turn off Auto-switch language or manually switch by choosing the keyboard language with the keyboard’s language or globe control. Changing the keyboard language may help select a supported input language, but it does not add Hindi-English mixed-speech support to the feature.

What ML Kit’s Hindi speech support means

Google’s ML Kit GenAI Speech Recognition documentation lists Hindi (hi-IN) as beta in both Basic and Advanced modes. Beta locale availability means Hindi is listed as an option; it is not a published accuracy guarantee for Hindi-English code-switching. The page cautions that beta languages may have a slightly higher word error rate and recommends evaluating the locale for the intended use case.

ML Kit mode What the documentation says What it does not establish
Basic Described as similar to the platform’s traditional on-device SpeechRecognizer; Hindi (hi-IN) is listed as beta. Reliable transcription of Hindi and English mixed within a sentence.
Advanced Uses a GenAI model and is described as offering broader language coverage; Hindi (hi-IN) is listed as beta. The current page names Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 as supported devices. Universal availability on Android phones or a published Hinglish accuracy result.

The ML Kit GenAI Speech Recognition page identifies the API as alpha and says it has no SLA or deprecation policy, so its status and device availability may change.

Why language identification is not mixed-language speech recognition

ML Kit Language Identification analyzes text after it exists; it does not recognize speech. It can identify romanized Hindi, but it classifies the language of a whole string and explicitly does not identify multiple languages within one string. Its documentation lists support for more than 100 languages, but that figure describes text language-identification coverage—not speech-recognition support or Hinglish accuracy. See ML Kit’s Android text language-identification documentation.

How to make Android understand Hindi and English when you switch between them

First determine which speech feature is producing the text. Gboard voice typing, an app using Android’s SpeechRecognizer, and a third-party speech service can have different language support and behavior.

  1. Identify the recognizer. Check whether you are dictating through Gboard, another app, or a service chosen by that app. Do not assume the Android API’s optional controls are implemented by every provider.
  2. Check the published language list for that feature. For Pixel advanced voice typing, Hindi is not in Google’s listed automatic-detection languages. A Hindi keyboard setting is not evidence that this feature supports mixed Hindi-English speech.
  3. Check language selection and model availability. Where the feature supports manual language selection, use the keyboard’s language or globe control. For app developers using Android’s switching extras, ensure the relevant models are available and handle recognition errors.
  4. Test the actual mixed-speech task. Try representative sentences with the speaker’s accent, preferred Hindi script or Romanized Hindi, and typical switching patterns. Compare results on the target device and provider rather than inferring Hinglish performance from separate Hindi and English support.

What developers should evaluate

To decide whether a recognizer suits a Hinglish app, evaluate the specific speech task and deployment setup rather than relying on a general multilingual label.

  • Mixing pattern: Does the system select a language for a session, switch between utterances, or handle Hindi and English within one utterance?
  • Provider and device: Is the behavior an optional Android API capability, a particular speech service, a Pixel keyboard feature, or an API restricted to named devices?
  • Locale status: Is Hindi listed, and is it stable or beta?
  • Models and connectivity: Are language models downloaded? Is recognition on-device, service-backed, or provider-dependent?
  • Evaluation match: Does the test set reflect the intended accents, noise, code-switch patterns, scripts, transliteration, and target devices?

Use a benchmark designed for the app’s Hindi-English speech rather than treating general multilingual support as a Hinglish word-error-rate result.

Is there an Android accuracy figure for Hinglish?

The cited Android and Google documentation does not publish a directly comparable Hindi-English code-switching accuracy statistic for Gboard or Android recognition. The corpus paper establishes a research resource for the task, but its accessible abstract does not provide an Android benchmark. Without results for a specified device, provider, speech style, language mix, and evaluation set, there is no supported basis here to label one Android mode “best” or assign it a percentage accuracy.
