To troubleshoot Apache HTTP Server configuration, first check that each directive is allowed in the place you put it, then test the active configuration with httpd -t and read the error log. Use httpd -S to inspect virtual hosts and httpd -M to see loaded modules. The command name, configuration paths, and service controls vary by operating system and package, so confirm which binary and configuration your running server uses.
Where should an Apache directive go?
Apache directives have defined contexts. A directive may be valid in the main server configuration, inside a virtual host, in a directory section, or in an .htaccess file. Check the directive’s reference entry before moving it: a directive placed in an unsupported context can cause a configuration error or prevent the server from starting. The directive quick reference lists each directive’s valid context and other usage details.
Section containers apply settings to different kinds of resources. <VirtualHost> scopes settings to a host; <Directory> scopes them to filesystem paths; <Location> scopes them to URL paths; and proxy-related containers apply to requests handled through mod_proxy. Section order and merging affect the result. A virtual host can override applicable main-server settings, and Apache selects one virtual host for a request. See the configuration sections guide when a setting appears to be valid but is not taking effect where expected.
Why is Apache ignoring my .htaccess file?
.htaccess is intended mainly for cases where a user cannot edit the main server configuration. Apache processes distributed configuration files only when the active configuration permits it. The configured access-file name defaults to .htaccess, but it can be changed with AccessFileName. The directory’s AllowOverride and, in Apache 2.4, AllowOverrideList settings control which directives may override earlier configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check these items in order:
- Confirm the file is named as configured and is in a directory along the filesystem path for the requested resource.
- Check the relevant directory configuration to ensure distributed configuration is enabled by its override policy.
- Verify that the particular directive is permitted by that policy and is valid in the
.htaccesscontext.
Apache 2.4 supports AllowOverrideList for allowing specific directives rather than relying only on broader categories. If you are using an older or vendor-modified version, verify its available directives and behavior against that installation’s documentation. The .htaccess guide explains when these files are appropriate; the AllowOverride reference documents the override controls.
How do I check Apache configuration syntax?
Run the syntax test before restarting or reloading the server. Apache’s command reference documents httpd -t: when parsing succeeds, it reports Syntax OK and exits successfully; otherwise it reports a syntax error. Make sure you run the binary with the same configuration invocation and relevant options as the running service. Package-specific wrappers, alternate binaries, or custom configuration paths can otherwise make a test of one configuration misleading.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Identify the Apache binary and configuration options used by the running server. Use local package or service documentation if the invocation is not obvious.
- Run
httpd -twith the appropriate configuration options for that installation. - If parsing fails, use the reported file and line information to locate the error, correct it, then test again before applying the change.
The httpd command reference also distinguishes related inspection options: -v reports the version, -V reports version and build parameters, -S displays parsed virtual-host settings, and -M lists loaded static and shared modules. -L lists directives provided by static modules, but not directives from shared modules. Paths shown in command examples can differ from the paths used by a particular build.
Where are Apache error and access logs?
The active configuration determines the destinations; do not assume a single log filename or directory across operating systems and packages. Inspect the applicable ErrorLog and CustomLog directives in the main server configuration and any virtual-host sections.

| Directive | What it controls | How to use it while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
ErrorLog |
Destination for diagnostic errors, set globally or within a virtual host. | Start here for configuration and request-related failures; a virtual host with its own directive writes its errors to that destination. |
CustomLog |
Destination for access-log entries. | Use it to find whether requests arrived and how they were recorded; a virtual host can have its own access log. |
LogFormat |
Fields included in access-log entries. | Choose fields that answer the operational question; a format can include the virtual-host name when several hosts share a log. |
LogLevel |
Verbosity of diagnostic logging. | Raise detail at an appropriate scope for a focused investigation, including for an individual module. |
When a virtual host defines its own ErrorLog or CustomLog, its errors or requests go to that specified file. Hosts without their own directives continue to use the main server’s logs. Apache’s log files guide describes the roles of the logs, while the references for ErrorLog, CustomLog, and LogFormat document their configuration.
How do I troubleshoot a virtual host that is not working?
- Confirm the version, binary, and configuration invocation used by the running service. The
-vand-Voptions can help identify version and build details. - Run
httpd -tagainst that configuration and resolve any syntax errors. - Read the active error log around the time of the failure. Apache’s Getting Started guide calls the error log a key resource for diagnosing problems.
- Run
httpd -Sto inspect how Apache parsed the virtual-host configuration, then confirm the relevant host and address are represented as expected. - Run
httpd -Mto check whether modules required by the configuration are loaded. - If the ordinary error detail is insufficient, temporarily increase
LogLevelfor the relevant module. For example, Apache 2.4 supports a setting such asrewrite:trace5for focused mod_rewrite investigation. Remove or reduce trace-level logging when the investigation is over.
Use the executable and options that match the service’s actual startup configuration; otherwise, the syntax test and virtual-host listing may describe a different configuration from the one serving requests. The LogLevel reference explains module-specific verbosity.

Which Apache configuration details are version-sensitive?
These instructions refer primarily to Apache HTTP Server 2.4 documentation. In 2.4, AllowOverrideList is available for finer control of directives allowed in .htaccess. The 2.4 feature overview also says NameVirtualHost is no longer needed and is deprecated. Older installations and vendor-patched builds may differ, so check the version and the documentation corresponding to the installed server before changing configuration. See the Apache 2.4 feature overview.
