Focus is a timed work session; Do not disturb is a setting that silences most notification banners. Focus can switch on Do not disturb for the session, but Do not disturb can also run on its own—and may still be active when Focus ends.
How Focus and Do not disturb differ

These controls are related, but they are not interchangeable. Microsoft describes the interaction this way: “When you start a focus session, do not disturb turns on automatically to silence your notifications.” Microsoft’s Focus guide explains the session controls, while its notifications guide covers silencing and notification exceptions.
When to use Focus
Choose Focus when you want a bounded session rather than just a quieter notification area. Its session settings let you set a duration, decide whether to show the Clock timer, hide taskbar badges and flashing, and choose whether the session turns on Do not disturb.
Microsoft also documents optional Spotify audio and Microsoft To Do integration through the Clock app. These are optional additions, not requirements for using Focus.

Choose Do not disturb when you want to silence most notification banners without starting a timed session. You can turn it on manually from notification center or configure it to activate under certain conditions.
In Settings > System > Notifications, expand the automatic-activation controls to configure triggers such as particular hours, duplicating a display, playing a game, using an app full-screen, or the first hour after a Windows feature update. Priority notification settings can allow calls, reminders, and selected apps through. Other notifications go directly to notification center while Do not disturb is active, so they can be reviewed later.

Why Do not disturb may stay on after Focus ends
Ending a Focus session does not always turn off Do not disturb. Microsoft says that if Do not disturb was already on before the session began, it stays on after the session ends. If it remains active, check whether it was enabled beforehand or whether one of your automatic-activation conditions has switched it on.
Where to find each control
- Start Focus from the taskbar: Select the clock or notification bell, choose a session length, then select Focus. Windows key + N opens the notification area.
- Start Focus in Settings: Go to Settings > System > Focus and select Start focus session.
- Start Focus in Clock: Open Clock > Focus sessions, choose a duration and optional breaks, then start the session.
- Toggle Do not disturb: Open notification center and select the bell icon marked with zZ.
- Configure Do not disturb: Go to Settings > System > Notifications to set automatic activation or priority notifications.
Windows interface wording and placement can vary by build. If a label differs, check the corresponding section in your device’s Settings app.
