What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When an internet connection keeps dropping, first find out what is actually failing: one device, the Wi-Fi link, or the internet service beyond your router. Check another device and, if possible, test Ethernet before changing settings or replacing equipment. Those comparisons help narrow the cause without treating any single test as proof.
Identify what is dropping
Watch the device when the interruption happens. These symptoms point to different parts of the connection:
- The Wi-Fi symbol disappears or the device disconnects: the device may be losing its wireless link to the router.
- The device stays connected to Wi-Fi but says “No Internet”: it may still be connected to the local network while the router, modem, or ISP cannot provide internet access.
- Only one app or website stops working: the issue may be limited to that app, site, or a firewall rather than the whole connection. Microsoft recommends checking whether other apps and websites work.
Also note whether other devices lose access at the same time. The scope is a useful clue, not a diagnosis on its own.
Run the quickest checks first
- Check the device: make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
- Test close to the router: move the device nearer and retry. Distance, walls, building materials, and objects between the device and router can weaken wireless service.
- Try another Wi-Fi band if available: if your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, connect to the other supported band. Neither is universally better; device compatibility, range, obstacles, and interference affect the result.
- Reconnect to the network: disconnect and join again. On Windows, forgetting the saved network and reconnecting can help when its saved settings are the problem.
- Ask whether anyone else is using the connection heavily: concurrent high-bandwidth use can coincide with slow or interrupted service, but it does not by itself establish the cause.
Wireless interference is another possibility. Google Home/Nest Help notes, “There could be signal interference due to traffic on your Wi-Fi network, on your neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks, or from other sources like microwaves or baby monitors.” That is Google’s support guidance, not an independent measurement.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare another device and Ethernet
Test another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi
If the second device stays online while the original repeatedly drops, focus first on the original device: its Wi-Fi settings, adapter, driver, or power-management settings may be involved. This result does not rule out every router or configuration issue.
Test a wired connection if possible
Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and see whether internet access stays up. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails, the wireless path is the leading area to investigate: coverage, interference, router wireless settings, firmware, or hardware. A wired test narrows the problem but is not proof that the router alone is at fault; device and network configuration can also matter.

If Ethernet also fails across devices, look beyond Wi-Fi: check modem status lights and ISP outage information, then contact your provider if service continues to interrupt. A computer without an Ethernet port may be able to use a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter. If a cable may be faulty, try a known-good one before buying equipment.
Check whether the device can reach the router
On Windows, a ping to the default gateway can help distinguish a local Wi-Fi problem from an upstream interruption. Find the default gateway in the network connection details, open Command Prompt, and run ping followed by that gateway address (for example, ping 192.168.1.1; use the address shown on your device, not necessarily this example).

- Replies arrive: the computer reached the router at the time of the test. That does not prove the modem or ISP connection is healthy; check wired access, modem status, and outage information.
- No replies arrive: the device did not get a response from the gateway. That alone does not prove the router is defective. Compare another device and, if possible, Ethernet.
A ping is a snapshot, so run it while the issue is occurring. Some network equipment may not answer ping even when other functions work.
Restart modem and router safely
A power cycle can clear a temporary equipment problem. It will disconnect everyone using the network while the devices restart. Follow the modem or router manual, or your ISP’s model-specific instructions, if available.

- Unplug power from the modem and router. For a combined modem/router, restart that single device.
- If the modem has a backup battery, remove it only as the equipment instructions direct.
- Wait the time specified for your model. Microsoft’s general guidance says to wait at least about 30 seconds; Google’s modem-specific procedure calls for 2–3 minutes and also unplugs Ethernet. These are different instructions for different guidance, not one universal timer.
- Reconnect modem power first and wait for its lights to settle. Then reconnect router power and give both devices time to start fully. For Google’s procedure, reconnect the cables and wait for the Internet light to become solid.
Work through Windows-specific checks
For Windows 10 or 11, use these steps if the tests point to one computer or its Wi-Fi connection:
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is off in Windows’ network controls.
- Forget the saved Wi-Fi network, then reconnect and enter its password again.
- Run the Windows network troubleshooter.
- For frequent wireless drops, check the wireless adapter’s power-saving settings and whether router channel settings may be contributing.
- Check for Windows updates and an appropriate Wi-Fi adapter driver. Prefer Windows Update or guidance from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
Use Windows network reset only as a last resort. It removes installed network adapters and their settings; VPN software or virtual switches may need to be set up again afterward.

Check Ethernet cabling when wired access fails
If you are testing Ethernet, verify both cable ends are firmly seated and connected to the correct router Ethernet port. Try another cable if one is available. Google’s guidance recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet speeds faster than 100 Mbps; that rating advice does not mean every connection problem needs a new cable.
Decide when to contact your ISP
Contact your ISP if interruptions affect multiple devices, Ethernet also loses internet access, modem status suggests a service problem, or the connection keeps failing after basic checks and a restart. Ask whether there is a reported outage and describe whether wired devices fail too. If Ethernet is stable but Wi-Fi is not, continue investigating local wireless coverage or equipment before assuming the ISP is responsible.
