How to check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Open the Chromebook’s Settings and look for Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If the option appears, the device can enable Google Play. If it does not, Google’s Chromebook Help says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps.
Support is not universal across all ChromeOS devices. Google’s enterprise deployment guidance says Chromebook models launched after 2019 support Android apps, but that broad platform guidance does not guarantee that a particular app will work. Check the exact device and app rather than relying on the launch year alone.
How to install Android apps from Google Play
- Install available ChromeOS updates.
- Select the time area in the lower-right corner, then open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Select More and accept the terms to enable Google Play.
- Open the Play Store, find the app, and select Install. Apps already installed on your Android phone do not automatically appear on the Chromebook; install them there separately.
If Play Store will not open or load, Google recommends restarting the Chromebook, checking the internet connection, and installing ChromeOS updates.

Why an Android app may be unavailable or incompatible
Chromebook support and app support are separate checks. Google Play Help notes that not all Android apps work on Chromebooks. A developer may restrict an app to certain device types, or the app may require hardware the Chromebook does not have. Google gives GPS as one example. A missing search result or a “Your device is not compatible with this version” message can therefore indicate an app restriction or unmet hardware requirement—not a problem with the Play Store setup.
If the app is missing or marked incompatible, check its requirements and ask the developer about Chromebook availability. For a replacement device, verify support for both the exact Chromebook model and the specific app you need.

What using Android apps on a Chromebook is like
App windows and controls
Newly downloaded Android apps can offer phone, tablet, or resizable window modes, but the available layout depends on the app. Input is app-specific too: Google documents keyboard and mouse key mapping for some games, not as a feature guaranteed for every app or game.
Files, permissions, and app data
Android apps can read and write files in Downloads when they have the necessary storage access. Some Android privacy settings may not appear or work the same way they do on a phone. Turning off Google Play on the Chromebook erases Android app data and settings stored on that device.

School or work Chromebooks may have additional restrictions
An administrator can disable Play Store access or limit which apps users may install on a managed Chromebook or account. If the Play Store option is unavailable on a school- or work-managed device, or an app cannot be installed, ask the organization’s administrator whether its policies allow it.
Consider extended updates before opting in on an older Chromebook
On eligible devices, opting into Google’s extended updates removes Android apps and the Play Store and erases Android app data on the Chromebook. Declining the opt-in retains Android apps, but automatic updates will not continue. Review that trade-off before choosing the extended updates option.

What to check when choosing a replacement Chromebook
- Confirm Android app support for the exact model.
- Check that the particular app is available for that Chromebook and meets any hardware requirements, such as GPS.
- Consider whether its interface and controls suit the Chromebook’s screen and input methods.
- If it is a school or work device, confirm that organizational policy permits the app.
- For an eligible older Chromebook, account for the effect of opting into extended updates.
Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for school Android app deployments, while noting that app requirements vary. That is school deployment planning guidance, not a universal minimum for every consumer Chromebook.
