Some 3D-printed illusions look different from different sides because their shape is designed to produce a particular outline or interpretation from selected viewpoints. The solid itself does not change: perspective and the way the eye and brain interpret its projected edges create the effect. But not every viewpoint-changing illusion works the same way—some rely on shaped silhouettes, others on ambiguous projections or lens-like surfaces.
How a 3D shape can look like different objects
A camera or eye sees a three-dimensional object as a two-dimensional projection. Its apparent outline depends on the viewing direction. Designers can exploit that relationship by shaping an object so its projection resembles one familiar form from a chosen angle and something quite different from another.
In an angle-specific silhouette illusion, the designer starts with a two-dimensional outline and maps its boundary into curves in three dimensions. The curves and surfaces are arranged so the intended view reproduces the outline. From above or from the side, the depth and bends that make the illusion possible become visible. Science Buddies describes the perceptual trick this way: “This illusion works because, from the correct viewing angle, your brain interprets the top of the object as flat.” Science Buddies’ project guide explains the construction and viewing effect.
Why the impossible arrow changes in a mirror
One well-known version, associated with mathematician Kokichi Sugihara, is an arrow that appears to point one way when viewed directly but points the opposite way in a mirror. This is called anomalous mirror symmetry. It is not the physical object changing shape: the reflected projection is interpreted as a different arrow outline. In the Science Buddies example, the direct view can still read as a right-pointing arrow after the object is rotated 180 degrees, while the mirror reflection appears to point left. The effect depends on the designed shape and intended viewing direction, so rotating it to arbitrary angles can weaken or erase the arrow reading.

Other illusions that look different from different viewpoints
“Looks different from each side” can describe several mechanisms. It is useful to identify which one an object uses before assuming that all such designs are perspective tricks.
| Type | What changes | How it works | Physical construction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angle-specific silhouette | The apparent outline from a chosen direction, or its reading in a mirror | A shaped solid is designed to project as a target outline from selected views | A shaped printed object; a mirror is optional for the reflected-arrow demonstration |
| Triply ambiguous projection | The interpretation of a picture or object among three readings | Projection geometry and viewing direction allow parallel edges to support different 3D interpretations | A rectangular object or picture; a cue to gravity can strengthen the effect |
| Lenticular object | The visible image or appearance as the viewer moves | Lens-like surface elements direct light from different parts of a color pattern toward different viewpoints | A lens surface and calculated color pattern; the cited research uses a multimaterial printing pipeline |
Triply ambiguous projections
In a 2020 paper, Kokichi Sugihara describes a design principle for a rectangular object whose orthographic projection contains three groups of parallel edges. When the picture is placed on a horizontal plane and viewed obliquely, different groups can appear vertical on the retina; the visual system can then interpret the projection as different vertically compressed three-dimensional objects. Sugihara writes, “This process gives three different interpretations of the picture, and thus creates triple ambiguity.” A real object that indicates gravity can make the illusion stronger. Read the 2020 paper on triply ambiguous objects for its geometric principle.

Lenticular 3D surfaces
Lenticular objects use a different mechanism from the arrow: lens-like surface elements steer light from different regions of an underlying color pattern toward viewers at different angles. The MIT CSAIL lenticular-objects project describes an editor that takes a 3D model, desired viewpoints and target images, then calculates lens placement and the color pattern. Its project page reports up to 19 appearances per object in digital ray-tracing simulation, but says fabrication inaccuracies prevented those simulated results from being achieved in physical fabrication in the reported work. That figure is a research-specific simulation result, not a general capability of consumer 3D printers.
How the effect fits into the history of optical illusions
These ideas did not begin with consumer 3D printing. The Science Museum Group catalogues Roger and Lionel Penrose’s impossible triangle and impossible staircase models, made in England between 1955 and 1959. The models used birch plywood, paper and adhesive, not 3D printing. The museum’s account explains that a real model viewed from a particular position can create the impression of an impossible drawing. See the Science Museum Group catalogue record.

How to make and inspect an angle-specific printed illusion
The Science Buddies project guide lays out a practical workflow for the arrow-style illusion. Expect to preview and adjust the design: a downloaded model is not guaranteed to work from every angle or print exactly as expected.
- Define the outline. Set the upper and lower curves for the shape you want the object to suggest from the intended viewpoint.
- Build the three-dimensional curves. Map the outline boundary into 3D curves designed for the chosen view.
- Preview and iterate. Inspect the model from the target direction and from other views; adjust it if the projected outline is not convincing.
- Export an STL and choose the units deliberately. STL files do not encode units, so make sure the unit setting in the printing workflow matches the model.
- Print and check the result. Compare the physical object with the screen preview. Inspect it from the intended angle, above and from the side, then try the 180-degree rotation and mirror view if the design calls for them.
The project guide says you need access to a 3D printer or an online printing service. If you do not own one, it suggests checking a school, library or makerspace. A mirror is optional for demonstrating the reflected arrow; it is not required for every kind of optical illusion. See the Science Buddies instructions for the project’s design and printing steps.
