Cloud Backup can restore eligible app data; it is not a complete copy of the headset, and not every app or save is guaranteed to be covered.
Back up and verify app data before a factory reset

Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and power. Let any app activity that could change saved data finish.

In the headset, open Settings > System > Backup and find the Cloud Backup panel or tab. Make sure Cloud Backup is enabled; users can opt out in headset settings. See Meta’s Cloud Backup documentation.

In the Cloud Backup panel, manually request a backup for each app whose data matters. This on-demand backup is useful immediately before a reset; an automatic schedule does not prove that a current backup exists.

Check the device panel or the Meta Quest Cloud Backups webpage for the app and its backup timestamp. The web view also shows backup size. If the app is missing or its backup is older than the data you need, do not assume a reset will preserve its local data.

If the app has multiple backup slots, select the intended backup in the Cloud Backups webpage and request its restore there. Otherwise, Meta says the latest backup restores automatically when the app is installed.

After verifying the backup, factory-reset the headset. When setup is complete, sign in with the Meta Account associated with the backup, reinstall the app, and allow its backup to restore.
What Cloud Backup saves—and what it does not
Meta describes Cloud Backup as a way to preserve app data, including progress and settings, for participating apps. It uses Android Auto Backup at the filesystem level. An app may be excluded by its developer or store data outside supported locations, so the presence of Cloud Backup does not mean every save is protected. Meta’s technical documentation sets a 100 MB limit per backup; data above that limit can cause backup failure. Cloud Backup requires Meta Horizon OS v35 or later.

Cloud Backup is not continuous syncing across headsets. Backups are maintained per app, device, and person. When an app is installed on a device without its own backup for that app, the system can restore the most recent backup from another headset owned by that person. Once both headsets have their own backup histories, those histories diverge. See Meta’s description of backup behavior.
When automatic backups run
Meta says backups run automatically once per night when the headset is idle, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi; when an app exits, up to once every six hours; and when a store-installed app is uninstalled. You can also request an ad-hoc backup from the Cloud Backup panel. These schedules are not a substitute for checking the actual backup and timestamp before you reset.

Choose a factory-reset route
The available route depends on whether the headset is paired or physically accessible. None of these reset methods creates a backup, so complete and verify the Cloud Backup steps first.

Do not rely on legacy Cloud Saves
Meta shut down Cloud Storage V2 on January 31, 2025. Its deprecation FAQ says users who did not migrate by the deadline lost access to legacy Cloud Save data, which was eventually deleted. The current feature to check before a reset is called Cloud Backup.
