Then confirm your internet connection and phone settings; if only WhatsApp Web or a desktop app is affected, troubleshoot that device separately. A single check mark means a message has left your phone but has not been delivered to the recipient’s device—it does not, by itself, prove that you are blocked.
Start by identifying which messages are failing
Send a test message to another contact. WhatsApp says sending and receiving problems are usually related to your internet connection, phone settings, or recipient availability.

Check your phone’s connection and settings
Confirm that the internet connection works
- Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled.
- Open a webpage or another internet-dependent app to check that the connection works, not just that the phone shows a signal.
- If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data and try sending again.
If neither connection works, resolve the phone’s network problem first. If other apps work but WhatsApp does not, continue with the app and device checks below.
Check date, time, and background activity
Make sure your phone’s date and time are correct; inaccurate settings can interfere with connecting. On iPhone, WhatsApp’s connection guidance also includes allowing Background App Refresh. Menu names and paths vary by operating-system version and device maker, so use your phone’s settings search if you cannot find the control.

Update WhatsApp and restart the phone
Install any available WhatsApp update from the official app store or source for your device. If the connection is strong and messages still will not send, restart the phone and try again. Avoid uninstalling WhatsApp or clearing its data as an early step if you have not confirmed your chat backup.
Understand what one check mark means
One check mark means the message has left your phone but has not reached the recipient’s device. The recipient may be offline or otherwise unavailable. If the issue is limited to one person, WhatsApp also lists possibilities such as that person blocking you, changing their number, or deleting their account. The check mark alone cannot tell you which explanation applies.

If messages to other people deliver, focus on the affected recipient rather than repeatedly changing your own network settings. If messages to everyone are stuck, return to your connection, phone settings, and app state.
Fix a problem limited to WhatsApp Web or desktop
A linked computer has its own internet connection and client to check. Even when your phone is offline, linked devices can continue to work; however, you need your primary phone to register your account and link a new device.

- Confirm the computer is online by opening a webpage.
- Update the WhatsApp desktop app or use a supported, current browser for WhatsApp Web.
- On your phone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Linked devices (on some platforms, open the menu first) and review the sessions. Log out any device you do not recognize.
- If you are adding a new device, link it through an official WhatsApp app or WhatsApp Web using the supported linking process.
WhatsApp currently states that an account can have up to four linked devices at a time. Its Help Center also says a linked device may disconnect after 30 days of inactivity, and linked devices log out if the primary phone is not used for more than 14 days. These are separate inactivity conditions, not connection-error codes. Check the current linked-device requirements.
When linked-device chats do not sync
WhatsApp currently notes a known issue in which some linked devices do not display up to one year of chat history. It says to keep the linked client updated and notes that the history may still be viewable on the primary device. Check there before treating missing history on a companion device as data loss.

Linking and syncing are not a substitute for a recoverable backup. WhatsApp describes encrypted transfer of recent chat history during linking and temporary encrypted handling to complete sync, but those details do not guarantee that your own backup is current or restorable. Before uninstalling, clearing app data, or taking another destructive step, verify your backup using WhatsApp’s backup settings for your platform. WhatsApp explains its chat transfer process.

Use only official WhatsApp apps and websites for linking. WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps or websites can put account security at risk and may lead to an account ban. Review Linked devices and log out sessions you do not recognize.

If messages still will not send
If these checks do not identify the cause, contact WhatsApp support. Include your device model, operating-system and WhatsApp versions, the exact error or indicator shown, whether all contacts or one are affected, and whether the issue occurs on your phone or only on a linked client. Check a current service-status source before concluding that WhatsApp is experiencing an outage; the symptoms alone do not establish one.
WhatsApp’s EEA Privacy Policy says encrypted messages that cannot be delivered are stored for up to 30 days while delivery is attempted. This describes handling under that policy, not a guarantee that every message will arrive or remain available in every circumstance. Read the EEA Privacy Policy.
