For many teams, a version-controlled Markdown directory is enough; add templates, CLI helpers, forms, cross-repository search, or a published decision log only where they solve a real workflow problem.
What an ADR tool needs to support
An architecture decision record (ADR) captures one significant architectural decision, its context and rationale, and its consequences. Together, a project’s ADRs form a decision log. AWS recommends using ADRs for choices such as system structure, security or availability requirements, dependencies, and interfaces; a record should at least explain context, decision, and consequences. AWS Prescriptive Guidance also recommends that each ADR have an owner who maintains and communicates it.
A useful tool should fit the whole lifecycle: authors can create records consistently, reviewers can link them to relevant code changes, and future teammates can locate them. Microsoft advises keeping records concise and factual, making the log easy to find with workload documentation, and including context and rationale. Supporting material can be linked, but the decision should make sense on its own. See Microsoft Learn’s ADR guidance.
Compare ADR tools by workflow
| Workflow | Tools and what they add | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Versioned Markdown | A directory of Markdown files committed with the project; a consistent filename convention makes records easier to scan. | Teams that want a low-overhead decision log beside code. |
| Structured authoring | MADR provides full, bare, and minimal Markdown templates. Version 4.0.0 was released on 2024-09-17. | Teams that want consistent sections without adopting a separate authoring application. |
| CLI creation and indexing | The ADR tools directory lists adr-tools scripts for the Nygard format, plus MADR-oriented options such as adr-log for maintaining an index and pyadr for lifecycle states. |
Teams that prefer creating and maintaining records from the command line. |
| Form-based editing | ADR Manager connects to GitHub to edit ADRs through forms; the directory also lists a VS Code extension. | Authors who would benefit from a guided editor or IDE workflow. |
| Portal discovery | The Backstage ADR plugin supports exploring and searching ADRs in a developer portal, including across multiple organizations and repositories. | Organizations whose decisions are spread across repositories and need a shared discovery point. |
| Rendered decision log | Log4brains supports local preview, CLI creation, static publication, and optional repository configuration for GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket links. Its documented prerequisites are Node.js, npm or Yarn, and Git. | Teams that want a navigable published site as well as repository-based records. |
| Commercial collaboration | The directory lists Loqbooq as a commercial web app for ADR-inspired decision logs with Slack integration. Current availability and terms are not established here. | Teams evaluating a hosted collaboration workflow; verify current product details before adopting it. |
The ADR tools directory was updated on 2026-09-23 and lists these and other projects. It advises readers to assess project maturity themselves; a directory listing is not a guarantee of current maintenance or availability.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose based on how your team writes and finds decisions
- Decide where records belong. If decisions should live beside the code they affect, begin with a version-controlled directory. Choose a separate editor or portal only if the team needs that additional workflow.
- Match authoring to your contributors. A shared Markdown template may be sufficient. Consider a CLI, form, or IDE extension when it makes consistent records easier for the people who will write them.
- Plan how readers will find them. A directory and project documentation link can work for a single repository. For many repositories, consider whether portal search or a rendered decision log will make records easier to discover.
- Check lifecycle needs. Determine how the team will show whether a decision is proposed, accepted, rejected, deprecated, or superseded. Choose a helper only if it supports a status workflow the team will actually maintain.
- Connect records to code review. Reviewers should be able to link the relevant ADR when a change applies to or conflicts with a recorded decision.
- Estimate operating burden. Account for dependencies, setup, hosting, repository integration, and maintenance. A richer interface is useful only if its added work is worth the improvement in writing or discovery.
Set up a maintainable ADR workflow
- Create a shared template and decision directory. Keep records in version control and use a consistent naming convention. The community guide’s example uses an imperative phrase, lowercase words, dashes, and Markdown; consistency matters more than choosing that exact style. See Documenting Architecture Decisions.
- Write one significant decision per record. Explain the context and rationale, state the decision, and describe consequences. Keep the record concise and factual, while making it understandable without requiring readers to open supporting links.
- Assign an owner and publish the log’s location. Make the decision log easy to find from project or workload documentation. Microsoft Learn’s guidance, last updated 2026-04-13, emphasizes including context and rationale.
- Link the ADR during code review. When a change implements a decision or may conflict with one, link the relevant record in the review so the decision can be considered alongside the code.
- Record changed direction with a new ADR. AWS describes accepted or rejected ADRs as immutable. If a later decision changes direction, document it separately; when the new ADR is approved, mark the earlier record superseded rather than silently rewriting its history.
These practices work with plain Markdown or a specialized tool. Log4brains’ setup documentation describes its preview, CLI, publication, and repository-link options, as well as its prerequisites: Log4brains documentation.
