A download claiming to offer a game before its announced release is not proof of a genuine leak—or a safe file. It may be an unauthorized copy, a fake, or a malicious installer. Official investigations document piracy sites distributing anticipated games before release, and security agencies warn that pirated games and fake beta invitations can expose people to malware and fraud. That does not mean every early-access offer, demo, or beta is malicious: verify the offer through the publisher or an official platform before installing anything.

What an “early game download” could actually be

The word “leak” can describe very different things. A file might be an unauthorized copy of the game, a fake that does not contain the promised game, or an installer carrying malware. A message styled as a beta invitation can also be a scam designed to collect information or persuade someone to install a harmful app.

These risks concern both the file and the route used to get it. A familiar game title, logo, or convincing release claim does not authenticate a download. The FBI advises people to avoid pirated games and use trusted stores and reputable publishers; the FTC explains that criminals use desirable downloads and compelling stories to lure people to malicious links.

What official investigations have documented

Piracy sites with games available before release

On July 10, 2025, the FBI announced the seizure of sites that had hosted pirated versions of highly anticipated games days or weeks before their official release dates. The FBI said records indicated 3.2 million downloads through the most-used download service from February 28 through May 28, 2025, and estimated $170 million in losses associated with the seized game-piracy sites. Those figures describe that specific enforcement case and period; they are not a count of all unreleased-game downloads or a measure of how many contain malware. Read the FBI Atlanta announcement.

Malware distributed through games

A separate FBI Seattle notice seeks potential victims who installed games including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. The FBI said the threat actor primarily targeted users between May 2024 and January 2026. This is a specific investigation, not evidence that all games or downloads from Steam are unsafe. Check the FBI’s notice and victim information.

Malware can do more than damage files. The FTC says it can steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud. In a 2026 alert, the FBI warned that malware in free online video-game content and torrented content can turn an infected device into part of a residential proxy network. The FBI’s advice is direct: “Do not download pirated software, such as video games and movies, which often include hidden malware that turns your device into a proxy.” Read the FBI’s residential-proxy networks alert.

Fake beta invitations

A beta label is not proof that an invitation is genuine. In an August 2023 notice, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned about malicious mobile beta-testing apps that imitate legitimate apps and may steal personal information, enable access to financial accounts, or take over a device. The warning concerns malicious mobile testing apps; it does not mean legitimate game betas are inherently scams. Read the FBI/IC3 beta-testing app warning.

Use these checks before downloading or responding. None can guarantee a file is safe, but a claim that fails them should not be trusted.

Source The publisher’s official site or a verified listing in an official store confirms the offer. An unknown file host, unsolicited message, repost, fan account, or search snippet is the only source.
Release status The publisher confirms the beta, demo, early-access period, or release date. The offer claims the game is available early, but the publisher does not confirm it.
Installation path You install through the usual official platform or publisher process. You are told to use a separate crack, key generator, unfamiliar launcher, or unrelated app. The U.S. Trade Representative’s 2019 notorious-markets review noted that cracks used to bypass game protection can be places where malware is hidden in pirated games; that is historical background, not a current prevalence estimate. Read the USTR review.
Information or payment requested Account activity stays within the ordinary, official platform process. A stranger asks for your password, verification code, wallet details, cryptocurrency, or an unrelated payment to unlock access.

Confirm the title and access details by navigating to the publisher’s site or the official store yourself, rather than following a download link in a message. If the publisher does not confirm the offer, do not install it.

If you already downloaded or ran a suspicious file

  1. If you have not run it, do not open it. Do not follow instructions to install an extra app, crack, or launcher.
  2. If you ran it, stop interacting with it. Avoid entering passwords, verification codes, payment information, or wallet credentials on the affected device.
  3. Run current security software and follow its instructions. The FBI notes that antivirus software may sanitize some infected devices, but removing an app does not always eliminate malware; more extensive remediation may be needed.
  4. Change exposed passwords from a trusted device. If you provided financial information or see suspicious account activity, contact the relevant financial institution or service through its official channel.
  5. Use the FBI notice that matches the incident. People who may have installed one of the named games in the Steam malware investigation can consult the FBI Seattle victim notice. For other suspected incidents, the FBI’s 2026 alert directs victims to report through IC3.

Keep your operating system and security software updated, and obtain games through trusted stores and reputable publishers, as the FBI recommends.
