There is no verified nationwide winner: official sources describe different local pay floors and benefits, not comparable average take-home earnings for Lyft and Uber drivers across U.S. markets. To judge which is better for you, compare the rules where you drive and your own trip-level earnings after vehicle costs and unpaid online time.
Which service pays drivers more overall?
The available official sources do not establish that Lyft or Uber pays more overall in the United States. They describe local rules and company programs, which may measure time differently and apply only in particular places. A minimum-pay formula is not the same as a typical hourly wage, and a platform’s gross or qualifying earnings are not take-home pay.
For an apples-to-apples comparison, use records from the same city and time period for both apps. Include time online, time on accepted trips, trip and repositioning miles, tips, incentives, tolls, platform deductions, and vehicle costs. Also check which benefits you actually qualify for. If you only compare an app’s “active” earnings figure with time spent driving, you may miss unpaid time spent waiting for requests.
What the official local rules show
| Market and source | What the pay rule or program measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| New York City, Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) | Minimum per-trip payments for covered high-volume for-hire services, including Uber and Lyft. The formula uses per-mile and per-minute rates adjusted for utilization—the share of on-duty time spent with a passenger. | A minimum hourly wage, exact driver payment, passenger fare, or nationwide platform ranking. The TLC states that its rules “do not establish a minimum wage or set the exact driver payment or passenger fare.” |
| New York State outside NYC, Lyft driver information (amount displayed as of March 2026) | For rides picked up outside NYC and not covered by TLC rules, Lyft describes a minimum based on the time from accepting a request to dropping off the rider. Its page displays $28.41; a shortfall excluding tips is made up in the next earnings period. | A statewide Uber equivalent or a typical hourly or net earnings figure. NYC-originating Lyft rides remain subject to TLC rules. |
| California, Uber earnings information | A two-week guarantee based on 120% of applicable local minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per active mile for expense compensation. A top-up applies if qualifying net earnings fall short; tips are excluded from that comparison. | Pay for online waiting, a national rate, or an hourly guarantee covering all time logged into the app. |
In New York City, the TLC says covered companies must provide detailed pay and deduction information, and it offers a calculator drivers can use to check trip minimums. For trips that end outside the city, the formula is adjusted to account for return time without a passenger. These protections affect how to check a covered trip; they do not turn the per-trip floor into a guaranteed hourly income.

How much do Uber and Lyft drivers make after expenses?
There is no verified, like-for-like national figure in the official sources reviewed for this comparison. Your net result depends on the hours and trips you work, the local rules, and the costs of operating your vehicle. A platform payout, fare total, or active-earnings calculation should not be treated as profit.
Calculate your own comparable result
- Choose the same comparison window. Use the same city, dates, and broad work period for Lyft and Uber. Include all online time, not just accepted trips.
- Record earnings by category. Keep fares, tips, incentives, tolls, and deductions distinct. Note whether a local guarantee counts each item when calculating a top-up.
- Track all relevant miles and time. Separate trip miles from repositioning or other empty miles, and note time waiting online as well as time on trips.
- Subtract vehicle operating costs. Account for fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation or lease costs, and other vehicle expenses relevant to your circumstances.
- Compare the result per total online hour. Apply any applicable local pay-floor calculation and benefit eligibility separately; do not assume a qualifying-time guarantee covers waiting.
The result is a personal comparison for that period, not a universal average. Conditions can change from week to week, so a single busy shift may not represent either platform’s usual performance for you.
Do Uber and Lyft pay for waiting time?
Do not assume time logged into an app is paid time under a minimum-pay guarantee. The specific rule matters: some floors use per-trip payments, while others use accepted-trip, booked, or active time.

California: Uber active time excludes waiting for a request
Uber’s California earnings page defines active time as beginning when a driver accepts a request and ending when the trip is completed. Online time spent waiting for a request is excluded. Its guarantee is assessed over two weeks, and qualifying tips are excluded from the top-up comparison. The listed $0.37 per active mile is an Uber-described California program term, not a nationwide reimbursement rate.

NYC’s TLC rule establishes a minimum per-trip payment using mileage and trip time, adjusted for utilization. It is not an hourly minimum for all on-duty time. Outside NYC, Lyft describes its New York minimum using time from accepting a request through dropping off the rider. These are different measures; neither should be presented as payment for every hour spent available in the app.
What benefits do Lyft and Uber drivers get?
Benefits are location- and program-specific. Check the eligibility terms and the current company or government information for the place where you drive rather than assuming a benefit applies nationwide.

New York: sick leave and related protections
Lyft’s New York driver information says eligible drivers accrue one hour of paid sick and safe leave for every 30 ride hours, up to 56 hours annually. Uber’s NYC information describes one hour per 30 active hours, also up to 56 hours per year, and provides a leave pay rate. These are geography-specific descriptions, and the qualifying-hour measures are not phrased identically.
The New York Attorney General describes benefits arising from separate settlements with Uber and Lyft, including sick leave, training, and support. Its settlement page lists one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours of qualifying trip time, up to 56 hours annually. In New York, the companies also provide earnings statements and rider-payment notices. Uber’s NYC overview points drivers to an in-app deactivation appeal process; consult current in-app instructions for the steps.
California: Uber healthcare stipend and injury protection
Uber’s California Proposition 22 overview says eligible drivers may qualify for a quarterly healthcare stipend if they average at least 15 active hours per week during the quarter and enroll in a qualifying health plan. It also describes an injury-protection policy for injuries while online, with medical, disability, and survivor benefits. These are descriptions of Uber’s California program; they should not be treated as a nationwide benefit or described as employer-sponsored health insurance or workers’ compensation on this evidence alone.
Lyft’s California search-result description referred to a similar 120%-of-minimum-wage floor plus $0.37 per booked mile and a healthcare subsidy threshold, but its page could not be fully checked. That is not enough to make a complete Lyft-versus-Uber comparison of California benefits.

Is Uber or Lyft better for drivers in my state?
There is no single answer without knowing the state, city, and the hours and trips you drive. Start with the local pay rule, then compare the platforms on the same practical terms.
- Pay-floor basis: Is the minimum per trip, or based on booked, engaged, or active time? Does it exclude online waiting?
- Expense treatment: Is mileage compensation part of a guarantee or a separate amount? Which miles count?
- Top-up calculation: How long is the measurement period, and how are tips, incentives, tolls, and cancellations treated?
- Benefits: What are the eligibility rules for sick leave, healthcare support, injury coverage, training, and appeals?
- Pay transparency: Can you inspect trip-level earnings, rider-payment information, and deduction explanations?
- Your realized result: Which app leaves you with more after vehicle costs and unpaid online time over a comparable period?
For example, an active-time guarantee can look stronger on a trip statement than it does across a full shift if you spend substantial time waiting. A per-trip floor may help you check individual covered trips without setting an hourly earnings minimum. Read the local rule’s measurement basis before comparing headline amounts.

How do rideshare drivers track mileage and expenses for taxes?
Keep records as you incur income and expenses. IRS guidance says gig income must be reported even when the work is part-time or a particular information form is not issued. A platform payout is not necessarily taxable profit or net take-home income.

Choose an eligible vehicle-expense method
IRS Publication 583 explains that eligible taxpayers may use either the standard mileage method or actual vehicle costs. The applicable choice and deduction depend on eligibility and circumstances. A mileage rate is a tax calculation method—not a promise that Lyft or Uber will reimburse that amount, and not a measure of your individual vehicle cost.
The IRS’s 2026 mileage-rate table lists 72.5 cents per business mile for January 1 through June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per business mile for July 1 through December 31, 2026. These are optional federal tax rates for eligible business vehicle use; the rate changes during the year.
Make the records useful
- Log business miles and retain records of relevant expenses when they occur.
- Keep trip and platform earnings information alongside your own mileage records so you can reconcile activity and income.
- Distinguish business miles from other vehicle use and preserve supporting records for the method you use.
A paper mileage logbook is one optional way to keep records; IRS guidance does not require buying a particular product or using a specific tracking method. For tax treatment tailored to your situation, consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
