Compare the total amount the sender pays with the amount the recipient can actually access—not just the advertised transfer fee or blockchain charge. For a fair comparison, match the corridor, amount, currencies, funding source, payout method and quote time, then include every conversion, service and withdrawal cost along the route.
What to compare for a fair result
A transfer price depends on its full route. A traditional remittance may involve a provider, intermediary banks and a recipient bank. A crypto remittance may involve buying crypto with local currency, transferring it, selling or converting it, and withdrawing the proceeds. Compare both options under the same conditions:
- Corridor and amount: sender country and currency, recipient country and currency, and the amount being sent.
- Funding and payout: how the sender pays and whether the recipient needs a bank deposit, mobile wallet or cash.
- Timing: capture quotes close together, with the date and time recorded; exchange rates and network costs can change.
- Usability: account access, local availability, withdrawal options and whether the recipient can use the money in the intended form.
Do not treat a route as complete if the recipient must use another exchange, bank or cash-out service to get usable funds. Include that step or mark the comparison incomplete.

For each option, collect the live quote before confirming the transfer. Record the sender’s total outlay and the recipient’s final accessible amount separately. A provider may take a fee on top of the transfer amount, or deduct it from the amount being converted; those produce different proceeds.

For covered U.S. remittance transfers, the CFPB says disclosures before payment include the transaction total, exchange rate, applicable fees and taxes, covered third-party fees, and amount received: CFPB Circular 2024-02. This is a U.S. rule for covered transfers and providers, not a global requirement or a rule that automatically applies to every crypto transfer. The OECD’s international transparency guidance also calls for total costs, including currency conversion, as well as expected delivery time and tracking: OECD G20-OECD Remittance Checklist for Consumers.
Calculate the cost of each route
- Get matching live quotes. Use the same amount, corridor, funding method and payout method for each provider or route. Save the quote time.
- Write down total sender outlay. Separate the amount that will be converted from any fee paid in addition to it.
- Check the exchange rate. Compare the offered rate with a suitable reference rate from the same time. A worse rate is a cost even when the provider advertises no transfer fee. The FCA says firms in its regulatory scope should communicate markups above their reference rate as a consumer cost: FCA, Consumer Duty: International payment pricing transparency.
- Add every handoff charge. For traditional transfers, check for intermediary and recipient-bank deductions. For crypto, count both the fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat conversion, spreads, platform charges, network fee and any recipient withdrawal or cash-out cost. A low network fee is only one part of the crypto route.
- Compare usable proceeds and delivery. Put the recipient’s accessible local-currency amount beside the sender’s all-in outlay, estimated delivery time and payout method. Check whether the recipient can access the required account or cash-out service.
- Repeat when the scenario changes. A different amount, quote time, funding source or payout method can change the result. Fixed charges weigh more heavily on small transfers, while percentage-based spreads grow with the amount; there is no universal break-even point without actual quotes.
Where costs can hide
Traditional money transfers
A transfer can have both an explicit fee and a less visible cost in its exchange rate. Intermediary banks or the recipient’s bank may also deduct charges, reducing the payout. Check the amount the recipient receives, not just the amount the sending provider says it will transfer.

Crypto transfers
A crypto route can charge at several stages: buying the asset, moving it on a network, selling or converting it, and withdrawing the proceeds. Buying and selling spreads may be included in the displayed price or conversion rate rather than listed as a separate fee. CFPB guidance also warns that conversion and withdrawal charges can make a supposedly free digital-wallet transfer costly to use: CFPB Circular 2024-02.

Is crypto cheaper than a traditional transfer?
There is no universal winner. In a 2023 policy paper, the IMF says the efficiency of crypto remittances is less clear once fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat conversion costs are counted, and that the answer depends on the corridor. It cites analysis suggesting traditional intermediaries may be more cost-efficient on the US–EU corridor, while other corridors may differ; this is a qualified analysis, not a current price ranking: IMF, Elements of Effective Policies for Crypto Assets.
The same paper cites a historical study reporting an average fee of 5.7% for a $200 remittance in 2020, with the 75th and 25th fee percentiles at 7.7% and 4%. Those figures describe that study’s 2020 data; they are not a present-day average or a direct comparison of crypto with traditional transfers.

Likewise, the IMF working paper’s observation that Bitcoin ATM cash-out fees were “usually five percent or higher” describes the specific historical context it examined, not a current estimate for every crypto cash-out provider, asset or country.

How to read “no fee” and speed claims
“No fee” may refer only to one line item: a provider can still earn through its exchange rate, and a crypto route can still incur conversion, network or withdrawal costs. The CFPB’s 2024 circular says that claims about “no fee” transfers or specific promotional exchange rates, without sufficient clarification when an offer is limited or temporary, are presumed material because cost matters to consumers. Check the complete quote and any conditions before comparing.

Speed is also part of the decision, not a substitute for measuring cost. Compare the stated delivery estimate, payout form and tracking options, and consider whether the recipient can complete the necessary conversion or withdrawal. CFPB guidance notes that misleading advertising has included “instant” or “within seconds” claims; OECD guidance includes expected delivery time and tracking among the information consumers should receive.
Use the comparison for your actual transfer
Keep a simple record of each quote: scenario, quote time, sender outlay, offered rate, fees and deductions, recipient proceeds, delivery estimate and payout method. A comparison is useful only when it covers the entire path to money the recipient can use. Recheck quotes when rates or network conditions may have changed, and do not generalize one corridor’s result to another.
