Keep sensitive data out of application logs by deciding what each event needs to record and emitting only those approved fields. Do not serialize whole requests, responses, exception objects, or arbitrary application state. Add shared redaction and sanitization controls, check error-tracking and APM integrations for raw-data capture, and protect the logs that remain.

What should an application log instead?

Start with the event’s purpose, then choose the minimum context needed to understand or investigate it. OWASP describes useful security logs in terms of when, where, who, and what; those details do not require copying the sensitive data involved. For example, when recording access to a protected record, log that access occurred and include only the context needed to investigate it—not the record itself. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

Depending on the event, useful fields may include a timestamp, service or component, action, outcome, safe actor reference, and interaction identifier. Use a pseudonymous reference where it serves the investigative purpose better than a person’s direct identifier. Define event types and their purpose before selecting fields, and review those fields when the purpose changes.

Which data should never be logged directly?

Exclude passwords, access and session tokens, encryption keys, database connection strings, payment card data, and sensitive personal information. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet says secrets should “Never be logged (must implement either an encryption or masking approach in place to avoid logging plaintext secrets)” in its guidance on handling secrets. Prefer not emitting a secret at all; masking or encryption requires a specific need and a deliberate, protected design. OWASP Secrets Management Cheat Sheet

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume hashing makes a value safe to log. Deletion, masking, hashing, and pseudonymization are possible ways to handle a field when it is genuinely needed, but the choice depends on the field’s sensitivity, investigative purpose, and re-identification risk. A transformation is not blanket permission to retain data that the event does not need. OWASP Logging Vocabulary Cheat Sheet

Where do sensitive values leak into logs?

Review application code, framework defaults, debug settings, and integrations. A safe event design can still be undermined if another component captures raw input or error context.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Requests and responses: avoid default capture of full bodies, headers, cookies, and query strings. Authentication headers and session identifiers can expose credentials; query strings may carry sensitive values.
  • Exceptions: inspect exception messages, objects, and arguments for credentials, personal data, or other request content. Avoid dumping arbitrary exception state.
  • Debug and diagnostics: check verbose logging and framework or library diagnostics, especially before production deployment.
  • Third-party telemetry: review error trackers and application performance monitoring (APM) tools for raw request-data forwarding. Strip query strings or fragments from applicable reports when they could contain sensitive values.

OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide identifies verbose or debug logging, request/response body capture, exception objects containing credentials, and third-party error tracking or APM that forwards raw request data as issues to check. How should logging rules handle untrusted input?

Validate and encode values that cross trust boundaries before they reach a log. Sanitize carriage returns, line feeds, and delimiter characters as appropriate for the output format; otherwise, an attacker may forge apparent records or disrupt downstream parsing. Structured logging helps keep values in distinct fields, but structure alone does not stop a sensitive value from being included. Pair it with explicit field selection and shared rules that exclude secrets and sensitive personal information by default.

How do you implement and verify the controls?

  1. Define event types and purpose. For each event, state what question it should help answer and choose only the fields needed for that purpose.
  2. Build events from explicit fields. Use named, reviewed fields rather than serializing whole request objects, responses, or arbitrary application state. Classify fields and default to excluding sensitive information.
  3. Centralize the policy. Put approved field selection, redaction, and input sanitization in a shared logging handler or an approved framework mechanism so individual components inherit the same controls.
  4. Inspect configuration and integrations. Check production logging settings, exception handling, debug output, error trackers, and APM capture rules for paths that may emit raw data.
  5. Test normal and failure cases. Review representative events, exceptions, and malformed input to confirm that sensitive fields are absent and untrusted values cannot forge entries or break parsing.
  6. Audit existing stores. Scan log samples and relevant integrations for leaked secrets or personal data. If you find an exposure, restrict access while you assess it and apply your organization’s incident-handling process.

OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet says, “Application logging should always be included for security events.” The aim is not to suppress security visibility, but to preserve it through safe event context rather than sensitive payloads. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

How should logs be protected after collection?

Logs can contain sensitive information even after careful filtering, so treat stored logs as sensitive assets. Restrict read privileges, review access periodically, and record and monitor access. Protect transmission over untrusted networks and consider integrity or tamper detection. Detect when expected logging stops, since a broken or disabled logging path can remove security visibility.

Set and enforce a disposal schedule for logs, copies, and backups. There is no universal retention period: it must meet applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, and operational obligations without holding data longer than necessary. Protecting stored logs limits the consequences of data that remains in them; it does not replace preventing sensitive fields from being emitted. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

How common are sensitive-data and excessive-detail findings?

The OWASP Secure Logging Benchmark reports that 44.1% of respondents had encountered sensitive information in logs, 35.3% had found authentication information, and 43.1% had encountered excessive diagnostic detail. The benchmark material does not establish the survey year, population, sample size, or methodology, so these figures should not be read as prevalence estimates for all applications or organizations. OWASP Secure Logging Benchmark

These findings underscore why both event design and post-collection audits matter: unnecessary detail can enter through application code, configuration, or telemetry integrations.
