If your Galaxy SmartTag will not connect, add it through the SmartThings app, keep it close to your phone, and check Bluetooth, software updates, and the tag’s battery before trying a reset. If the tag is already listed in SmartThings but its map location is stale, troubleshoot location updating separately: a fresh location may depend on nearby Galaxy devices participating in the Galaxy Find Network.
First identify what is failing
The next step depends on what you see in SmartThings:
- The tag never appears: use the SmartThings add-device flow and keep the tag close to the phone.
- Setup starts but does not finish: check updates, Bluetooth, battery, and proximity, then retry the app prompts.
- The tag is listed but does not respond: check its battery and use the reset procedure for its model and region.
- The tag is listed but the map is not updating: investigate battery and network-assisted location rather than repeating initial pairing steps.
Pair the tag in SmartThings
Samsung’s SmartTag setup instructions use SmartThings, not the phone’s generic Bluetooth settings as the primary pairing route. Samsung explains that a SmartThings connection is required to use the tag’s remote tracking and searching capabilities.
- Open SmartThings. If a detected-device prompt appears, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If no prompt appears, open the app’s add-device flow, choose Samsung, then Galaxy SmartTag, and follow the prompts. Menu wording can vary by app version and phone software.
- When prompted, press the center button on the tag. Samsung UK says the tag makes a sound to confirm pairing mode.
- Complete the remaining steps in the app, then check that the tag appears in SmartThings and SmartThings Find.
Keep the tag beside the phone while pairing and remove obstacles between them where practical. If the flow fails, close and reopen SmartThings and retry it after the checks below.

Clear common connection blockers
- Update the phone and app: install available phone software updates and update SmartThings.
- Check Bluetooth and power: make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and the tag has a working battery.
- Bring the devices close: stay near the phone during setup. Samsung’s general Bluetooth troubleshooting guide gives 30 feet as a broad guide, not a guaranteed SmartTag distance; range varies with the device and environment.
- Restart and retry: close and reopen SmartThings, restart the phone, and try the in-app add flow again.
If pressing the tag’s button produces no response, check the battery before repeating setup. Available settings and menu labels can differ by phone and software version.
Check the battery before resetting
If your tag is visible in SmartThings, Samsung’s US guide explains how to view its battery level there. For a tag that is unresponsive or appears depleted, replace the battery according to the instructions for your exact model. Samsung Gulf identifies a CR2032 coin cell in its SmartTag guidance; confirm your model’s battery requirement and follow the polarity markings before installing one. Battery replacement can help when the battery is depleted, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every pairing failure.

Samsung says a flat object such as a guitar pick can be used at the cover notch. A special opening tool is not required by that guidance.
Reset or move the tag to another phone
Samsung US manual reset
Try a reset only after the basic checks. Samsung US gives this manual sequence for its SmartTag guidance:

- Remove the tag’s cover and battery.
- Press and hold the center button.
- While continuing to hold the button, reinsert the battery.
- Keep holding for five seconds, then release.
Samsung cautions that if the tag makes a sound immediately after the battery is reinserted, repeat the reset steps. Follow the support instructions for your specific model and country if they differ.
Before connecting the tag to another phone
Samsung US says to remove the tag from SmartThings before connecting it to another phone. In SmartThings, find the tag in its location and room, touch and hold it, choose Edit, then Delete device and confirm. After it is removed, add it again through SmartThings. Exact menu names may vary.

Samsung Canada’s separate unresponsive-tag procedure
Samsung Canada publishes a different procedure for an unresponsive tag: remove the battery, wait about 20 minutes, install a new CR2032 battery, close the case, then allow two to three minutes for activation. This is a regional alternative, not an extra step to combine with the Samsung US button-hold reset. Use the instructions applicable to your model and region.

A tag can be paired and listed in the app without showing a fresh map location. Samsung describes finding over Bluetooth Low Energy when the tag is nearby and assistance through the Galaxy Find Network when it is outside direct Bluetooth range. Samsung Gulf’s guide, updated June 2026, says a completely discharged battery or a lack of nearby Galaxy Find Network devices may prevent a location update. Network-assisted finding is not guaranteed when participating nearby devices are unavailable.

For a tag already recognized by SmartThings, open SmartThings Find and use available controls such as map view, Search Nearby, or Ring. Their availability can depend on the tag model and current app.
When to contact Samsung
If the tag still will not pair or respond after the applicable checks and reset, contact Samsung Support. Samsung’s support pages provide the escalation path; consult the page for your country and SmartTag generation for current instructions.
