In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the laptop’s built-in screen if needed, and check its current refresh rate. If Windows lists 144 Hz as an available option, select it and confirm the current rate and resolution shown on the page.
Check the current refresh rate in Windows
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If Windows shows a display selector, choose the laptop’s internal display rather than an external monitor.
- Read the current display mode’s resolution and refresh rate.
- If 144 Hz is available but is not selected, choose it, then check the page again to confirm the current rate and resolution.
Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions describe Advanced display as the place to view the selected display’s current resolution and refresh rate and choose from available rates. An asterisk beside a rate means it does not support the current resolution; selecting it changes the resolution to reach that rate. Available choices depend on the display and its supported modes.
What a 144 Hz reading does—and does not—confirm
A 144 Hz mode means the display updates 144 times per second in that mode. It does not mean a game or app is rendering 144 unique frames per second. A game’s FPS counter measures application rendering; Advanced display reports the mode Windows has selected for the display. These are different parts of the graphics pipeline, as Microsoft explains in its Dynamic Refresh Rate overview.
In some Windows 11 configurations, refresh-rate reporting can be virtualized. Microsoft’s PhysicalPresentationRate API documentation distinguishes the physical rate at which pixels are scanned out from the virtualized presentation rate. That is an application-level technical distinction, not another ordinary consumer setting to check. So the Advanced display reading is the practical way to verify the Windows-selected mode, but it is not a direct physical scan-out measurement in every configuration.

If 144 Hz is missing or the behavior varies
144 Hz is not listed
If 144 Hz does not appear among the available rates, Windows is not exposing that mode in the current configuration. That alone does not establish why. The panel’s capability and the modes exposed through firmware and the display driver are relevant; Microsoft’s display guidance notes that Windows relies on accurate display descriptors and firmware-reported support.
The rate seems to change with activity
On supported Windows 11 hardware, Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can adjust refresh behavior according to activity. Microsoft describes DRR as a way to balance smoother display behavior with power management, and availability depends on the hardware. Reopen Advanced display while observing the behavior in question; check that the built-in screen is selected and note the current rate and resolution.

Optional: check for skipped frames with a camera
If you want to investigate whether frames in a moving test pattern are being skipped, the TestUFO Frame Skipping Checker offers a camera-based test. Wait for the page to say READY, then photograph the moving-square pattern using an exposure of 1/10 second or longer. Screenshots will not work; close other apps and browser tabs for the test. Gaps in the photographed sequence indicate frame skipping according to the test instructions. This is a specialized check for the pattern, not a replacement for reading Windows’ selected refresh mode.
