1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn iPhone or iPad can enter recovery mode because startup or software recovery has run into a problem, or because someone deliberately started recovery mode to update or restore the device. The screen alone does not identify a failed part. If you are troubleshooting a device that is stuck starting up, connect it to a computer and choose Update if that option appears; Restore erases the device.
Why an iPhone or iPad enters recovery mode
Recovery mode is a troubleshooting state used when the device cannot start or complete a software recovery normally, and it is also a mode a person can enter intentionally during a recovery procedure. Apple lists several situations in which recovery may be needed: a computer does not recognize the device, the Apple logo remains for several minutes without a progress bar, the recovery screen appears, or Recovery Assistant repeatedly starts without fixing the problem. Apple’s recovery-mode instructions describe these user-facing situations.
Startup or update trouble
A startup problem may leave an iPhone or iPad unable to proceed normally. Apple says Recovery Assistant can help address startup issues by downloading a software package; if the issue continues on current iOS or iPadOS, Apple directs users to recovery mode and, if necessary, service. Apple’s Recovery Assistant guidance explains that route.
A lower-level boot failure
At the technical level, Apple’s Platform Security documentation says that failures to load or verify later boot stages are handled differently depending on the hardware. For the hardware classes described on that page, failures involving LLB or iBoot can lead to recovery mode. Apple Platform Security’s boot-process documentation describes this mechanism. It explains how recovery can be reached; it does not let you identify a failed component from the recovery screen.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Someone deliberately started recovery mode
Recovery mode may appear because a person followed the model-specific button procedure to update or restore the device, reset it, or remove beta software. Apple’s steps differ by model and by whether the device has a Home button, so use the instructions for the specific iPhone or iPad rather than assuming one button sequence applies to all models. Apple’s recovery instructions and its beta-software removal guidance cover these procedures.
Does recovery mode mean the device is broken?
No. Recovery mode is a troubleshooting state, not a diagnosis. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance includes software, cable, USB port, computer, and network checks, as well as the possibility that service is needed when recovery fails. The screen by itself does not prove that storage, the battery, or another specific component has failed. Without details such as the model, exact screen, recent update history, error message, connection setup, and diagnostic results, the cause of one particular device cannot be determined. See Apple’s restore-error guidance for connection and error troubleshooting.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What to do if the device is stuck starting up
- Find the instructions for your model. Open Apple’s recovery-mode guide and follow the button sequence for the specific iPhone or iPad. Button steps vary by generation and Home-button presence.
- Connect the device to a computer. Apple’s documented workflow uses Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier; and Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. Use a cable that fits both the device and computer. For relevant connection errors, Apple recommends trying the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable; connector compatibility varies by model. Apple’s error guide includes cable and USB troubleshooting.
- Choose Update first if offered. For a stuck iPad, Apple’s guidance says to choose Update when the computer offers Update or Restore. This is the option to try first when the goal is to address a startup problem without choosing the erase-and-reinstall path.
- Use Restore only with its data consequence in mind. Restore reinstalls iOS or iPadOS and erases the device. Apple’s beta-removal procedure specifically uses Restore to install the current non-beta system, also erasing the device. Apple’s stuck-iPad guidance and beta-removal instructions explain these options.
Update or Restore: which should you choose?
| Option | Purpose | Data consequence | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update | Attempt to address the startup problem through the computer’s recovery workflow. | Apple’s cited stuck-iPad guidance presents it as the first choice; it does not describe Update as the erase-and-reinstall option. | Try this first when troubleshooting a device that will not start and Update is offered. |
| Restore | Reinstall iOS or iPadOS. | Erases the device. | Use only when you understand the erasure, or when following a procedure such as Apple’s beta-removal flow that calls for Restore. |
The Update-first instruction and Restore consequence are described in Apple’s stuck-iPad article and recovery-mode guidance.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, the device may leave the recovery screen. Apple’s instruction is to let the download finish, then repeat the model-specific recovery-entry steps. The 15-minute figure is a procedural threshold, not a measure of how often recovery mode occurs. Apple’s stuck-iPad guidance gives this instruction.

When to check the connection or seek service
- If the computer does not detect the device or an error appears, check for software updates and try the cable, USB port, computer, and network as appropriate. Apple associates some restore-error groups with cable or USB connection problems and others with possible hardware issues; an error message and troubleshooting results matter more than the recovery screen alone. Apple’s restore-error guide provides the relevant checks.
- If a required button is broken and you cannot enter recovery mode, or recovery and restore do not resolve the problem, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple says service may be needed in these cases. Apple’s recovery-mode instructions outline when to escalate.
