Discord Game Overlay lets you use selected Discord features while a game is running, without switching windows. Discord currently supports it on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it does not publish a definitive current list of compatible games. The revamped overlay works in windowed or borderless fullscreen—not true fullscreen—so support depends on your system, the game’s display mode, and whether the overlay behaves reliably in that title.
What Discord Game Overlay does
Game Overlay places selected Discord controls and information over a game. Depending on what you enable, you can view and participate in text chats, see who is speaking or muted in voice chat, manage calls, receive notifications, and show or hide overlay windows. Discord also documents starting a game screen share from the overlay.
To turn it on, open User Settings > Overlay in the Discord desktop app and enable the overlay. You can enable messages in the same settings area, adjust the overlay’s appearance and controls, and change its default hotkey, Shift+`. Which games and systems support Discord Overlay?
Supported operating systems
Discord’s current support article lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. It says the overlay does not function on macOS or Linux. This describes the overlay feature, not whether Discord itself or other Discord features are available on those systems.

Game compatibility is not a published roster
Discord does not provide a definitive, current game-by-game compatibility list in its reviewed support articles. Its known-issue guidance says the revamped overlay is expected to be compatible with nearly all games, but that broad expectation is not a guarantee for a specific title. Older lists of problematic games refer to the legacy overlay and should not be treated as today’s supported-games roster. Display mode matters
The revamped overlay works in windowed fullscreen and borderless fullscreen modes, but not in true fullscreen. True fullscreen prevents other desktop applications from appearing over the game. Discord says a global Enable legacy overlay option may be used for true fullscreen while that option remains available; Discord notes it could be removed in the future. The overlay is hidden whenever the game window is not focused.

How to check whether it works in your game
- Confirm your system: use Discord’s desktop app on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Enable the overlay: in Discord, go to User Settings > Overlay and switch it on. Confirm the game is enabled for the overlay if the app presents a per-game control.
- Use a compatible display mode: set the game to windowed or borderless/windowed fullscreen rather than true fullscreen.
- Focus the game and test: while the game window is active, press the overlay hotkey, which defaults to Shift+` unless changed in settings.
- Check relevant chat settings: if messages are missing, make sure the server, DM, or group is not muted and Streamer Mode is off.
- Judge stability as well as visibility: if the overlay appears but causes lag, crashes, or other problems, turn it off for that game.
A Discord feature built directly into a particular game is a separate developer integration; it does not establish that Discord Game Overlay works with that game.

What to try if the overlay is missing or causes problems
- It does not appear: switch the game to windowed or borderless windowed mode, make sure the game is focused, and test the overlay again.
- Messages do not appear: check whether the relevant server, DM, or group is muted, and whether Streamer Mode is enabled.
- It causes lag, a crash, or another game issue: disable the overlay for that specific game rather than assuming it is required for Discord voice or text chat.
- The game runs with elevated permissions and keybinds do not register: Discord’s experimental System Helper may help keybinds register in elevated-permission games. It is available only to certain Windows desktop users, and Discord says core overlay functionality remains usable without it. Details are in Discord’s Discord System Helper article.
- A crash persists: Discord asks users to collect the hook log from
