You can build a credible portfolio through open source by making useful, reviewable contributions to projects relevant to the work you want to do, then presenting the exact artifacts and your role clearly. Code is only one option: documentation, testing, design, writing, accessibility, translation, and community work can all demonstrate valuable skills. A contribution can show how you work with others, but it does not guarantee interviews or a job.
Choose a project that fits your goals and can use your help
Start with software or a community you already use, or a project that relates to the role you hope to pursue. Familiarity helps you recognize real problems; relevance makes it easier for a reviewer to see why the contribution belongs in your portfolio.
Before taking on a task, read the project’s README, license, contribution instructions, code of conduct, and recent issue and pull-request history. Check for recent commits, active discussion, and maintainer responses: a project can have a large audience yet little capacity to review contributions. GitHub’s guide to contributing to open source recommends understanding the project and its community before participating. Its healthy-contribution guidance also describes signals that help people assess a project’s readiness for contributors.
Compare possible projects by the factors that affect whether you can do useful, demonstrable work:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| What to assess | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Relevance to your target role | A contribution is easier to interpret when its subject or skills connect to the work you want to do. |
| Task clarity and scope | A specific, bounded task is easier to complete, review, and explain than an open-ended rewrite. |
| Review activity | Recent maintainer responses and handled pull requests suggest that submitted work is more likely to receive attention. |
| Onboarding and community fit | Clear setup instructions, communication channels, and norms help you contribute without guessing how the project works. |
| Type of work available | Choose tasks that let you show the abilities relevant to your goals; those tasks may involve code, docs, tests, design, or community support. |
A good first issue or help wanted label can point to a suitable task, but neither label guarantees that the work is appropriate, still available, or likely to be accepted. Read the issue and project guidance, and ask a focused question in the preferred channel if scope or ownership is unclear.
Find a contribution with a clear, useful outcome
A portfolio contribution should solve a real project need and leave behind an artifact another person can inspect. A small change is not automatically valuable, and a large change is not automatically impressive. The useful test is whether the problem, your role, and the result can be understood quickly.

Before starting substantial work that has not been requested, check the project’s norms and ask whether maintainers want it. This avoids spending time on a change that conflicts with existing plans or duplicates someone else’s work. GitHub’s contribution guide explains common repository conventions and workflows, while the Open Source Guides describe participation beyond code.
Make and submit the change using the project’s workflow
There is no single workflow that applies to every repository. Follow its contribution documentation for development setup, formatting, tests, issue handling, communication, and pull-request requirements. On GitHub, a common pattern for a repository that uses forks is:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Read the project instructions: check the contribution guide, issue, code of conduct, development setup, test commands, and pull-request template. Confirm the task is still wanted.
- Fork and clone when required: create your fork on GitHub, then clone it locally using the instructions for the project. Some repositories use a different access or branching model, so follow their documented process.
- Create a descriptive topic branch: keep the work separate from your default branch and name it for the issue or change.
- Make a focused change: address the agreed problem, use the project’s conventions, and avoid bundling unrelated edits.
- Run the requested checks: use the repository’s documented test, lint, build, or review steps. If a check cannot be run, state that accurately rather than implying it passed.
- Commit and push: describe the change clearly in the commit and push the branch to your fork or the location the project specifies.
- Open a pull request: target the appropriate upstream branch, explain the problem and solution, and link the related issue when useful. Follow the project’s template.
- Respond to review: consider requested changes, ask for clarification constructively, and update the work as appropriate. Review and collaboration are part of what the public record can demonstrate.
GitHub’s official contribution instructions cover repository conventions, starter labels, forks, branches, pull requests, and review. The repository’s own rules take precedence over this common sequence.
Turn the work into a portfolio people can evaluate
Feature a small number of relevant contributions rather than an undifferentiated activity log. For each entry, link directly to the strongest public evidence available—such as the issue, pull request, commit, documentation, demo, or release—and explain:

- Context: What problem or project need prompted the work?
- Your role: Which part did you personally handle, especially if several people contributed?
- Approach: What did you change, and what constraints or decisions shaped it?
- Outcome: What happened: was the change proposed, reviewed, merged, released, or otherwise used?
Use precise status language. A proposed pull request is not the same as a merged change, and a contribution to another project does not make you its owner. GitHub’s resume guidance suggests pinning three to five projects and making repositories easier to assess with a clear README, setup instructions, examples, and tests. For work in repositories you do not control, link to your specific contribution rather than presenting the whole project as your own.
Choose portfolio pieces by relevance to the intended role, clarity of your individual contribution, quality of the artifact, evidence of collaboration or review, and how quickly a reviewer can understand the work. GitHub describes open-source projects as highlighting collaboration; that is platform guidance, not evidence that contributions produce a particular hiring outcome.

Make sure the public evidence is easy to find
A contribution graph is a summary, not a complete portfolio. GitHub’s profile contributions reference lists conditions that affect which activity appears, including account-associated commit email and qualifying repository and branch context for commits. Display rules also vary by activity type, including issues, pull requests, and discussions. Because these are GitHub-specific rules and can change, check the current guidance if activity does not appear as expected.
Regardless of whether an item appears on your graph, link directly to the work in your portfolio or resume. A reviewer should be able to open the artifact and see the relevant change, discussion, or outcome without having to infer your contribution from a profile count.
