If Guided Vision is missing or Gemini Live cannot use your camera or microphone, first check whether the feature is available on your Android account, then verify Gemini’s settings, Android privacy controls, and the Live session state. Guided Vision is an accessibility feature in Gemini Live—not the same thing as ordinary camera sharing or screen sharing.

First, check that Guided Vision is available on your device

Google describes Guided Vision as a Gemini Live feature for Android and says it is “rolling out slowly over time.” If you do not see its setting, availability may not have reached your account yet; that alone does not indicate a camera fault. Update the Google app and Gemini app, and confirm you are using Gemini on an Android phone or tablet with a signed-in Gemini Apps account. Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or Google Messages. Google’s eligibility and rollout information is on its Gemini Live help page and Guided Vision help page.

Updating can address an outdated app, but it cannot guarantee access to a feature that has not yet rolled out to your account. Google does not provide a universal device-menu path or a definitive account-by-account rollout check for every Android phone.

Enable Guided Vision and start camera sharing

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Settings, then turn on Use Guided Vision in Live.
  3. Start a Gemini Live session and share your camera. Guided Vision works in Live after camera sharing begins.
  4. To finish, tap End Live session.

If the setting is present but camera sharing will not start, continue with the Android access checks below.

Fix camera access and sharing interruptions

Check Android’s camera privacy control

On Android 12 and later, a green indicator appears when an app is using the camera or microphone. Swipe down and tap the indicator to see which app is using the sensor and manage access. You can also check the Camera access tile in Quick Settings: if camera access is off system-wide, turn it on. Some devices require you to add the camera or microphone tile to Quick Settings, and swipe behavior varies by device. Google’s Android camera and microphone access instructions explain the system controls.

Check Gemini’s app permission

If Android denies camera access to Gemini, allow the camera permission in your phone’s app-permission settings. Menu names and paths vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use your device’s Settings search for Gemini’s permissions if the labels below differ. Also confirm that system-wide camera access has not been disabled in Quick Settings.

Restart camera sharing after leaving Live

Camera sharing stops if you put Live on hold, leave the Gemini app, or lock the screen. It resumes automatically when you resume a session from hold. After returning to Gemini from another app or unlocking the screen, open the Live session and tap its camera control to start sharing again; sharing does not restart automatically in those cases. Google documents this behavior in its Gemini Live help page.

Fix “Gemini can’t hear me”

  1. In the Live session, check that the microphone is not muted and that the session is not on hold.
  2. Check Android’s Microphone access tile in Quick Settings and turn it on if system-wide access is off.
  3. In Android settings, allow microphone permission for Gemini. Exact labels vary by phone and Android release.
  4. If the green privacy indicator is visible, tap it to identify the app using the microphone and review access.

Muting Gemini Live silences the device microphone; video or screen sharing can continue. Ending Live closes the session. These controls are distinct, so a visible camera feed does not mean the microphone is unmuted. See Google’s Gemini Live help page and Android privacy-control instructions.

Set up an accessibility shortcut or launch Guided Vision with TalkBack

Choose a device shortcut

  1. Open device Settings and go to Accessibility > Vision assistance > Guided Vision.
  2. Turn on the Guided Vision shortcut.
  3. Choose an available launch method: the floating accessibility button, a two-finger swipe up from the bottom, or holding both volume keys.

Accessibility menu names and shortcut behavior may vary across devices. If the route is missing or conflicts with another gesture, try enabling Guided Vision through the Gemini app’s settings and starting it from Live instead.

Use the TalkBack menu

Google’s route is to update and enable TalkBack, make a three-finger tap to open the TalkBack menu, then choose Guided Vision. If that option is absent, try the regular Gemini settings and Live camera controls first. Follow Google’s Guided Vision instructions for the accessibility route.

Make sure the problem is not screen sharing

Guided Vision uses the camera view in Gemini Live. Screen sharing instead shares the device’s full screen, and ordinary camera sharing gives Gemini a view of your surroundings. These are related Live functions, but they are not interchangeable.

For screen sharing, Google requires Gemini Live notifications to be turned on. Start sharing from the Live screen or, where available, the Share screen with Live prompt. Screen sharing stops when Live is put on hold or the screen locks, and it does not automatically resume; start it again from Live. Stop sharing from Gemini or the Android Screen Sharing notification. The notification requirement and session behavior are described in Google’s Gemini Live help page.

Use Guided Vision safely

Google warns: “Guided vision can make mistakes. It’s not intended as a medical device, mobility aid, or substitute for safe-travel guides. Don’t use it for navigation or obstacle detection. You’re solely responsible for your health and safety.” Treat its camera-based descriptions as fallible, and do not rely on them to identify hazards or guide travel. Google also asks users to respect others’ privacy and ask permission before recording or including them in a Live chat, as explained in its Gemini Live help.
