Ethernet backhaul is usually the better choice when you can connect mesh nodes by cable and want a more predictable node-to-node link. It keeps that traffic off Wi-Fi airtime. Wireless backhaul is easier to install and can work well when cabling is impractical—especially on systems with a dedicated backhaul radio. Neither option guarantees faster internet: results depend on the mesh system, ports, placement, building materials, interference and client connection.

What backhaul means in a mesh Wi-Fi system

Backhaul is the connection between the main mesh router and its satellite nodes. It carries traffic from a satellite to the rest of the network; it is separate from the Wi-Fi link between a client device, such as a phone or laptop, and the node serving it. TP-Link explains that a Deco node connected by Ethernet does not use wireless bandwidth for that backhaul link (TP-Link’s Deco Ethernet backhaul guide). ASUS likewise defines backhaul as the underlying connection between mesh nodes and distinguishes wired Ethernet from wireless links (ASUS ROG Support’s mesh Wi-Fi guide).

So “wired backhaul” does not mean your phone or television is wired. It describes only how the mesh nodes connect to one another; client devices can still connect to those nodes over Wi-Fi.

Ethernet vs. wireless backhaul at a glance

Decision Ethernet backhaul Wireless backhaul
Node connection Ethernet cable between mesh nodes Wi-Fi radio link between mesh nodes
Effect on Wi-Fi airtime Traffic on the cable-connected link does not use Wi-Fi airtime May share airtime with client devices; a dedicated backhaul band can reduce that competition
Performance expectation Often preferable for stable node-to-node capacity, provided ports and cabling support the required link speed Varies with signal quality, distance, interference, radio design and placement
Installation and placement Needs suitable ports and an existing or newly routed cable; cable can link nodes where a strong direct Wi-Fi path is difficult Avoids cable runs, but each satellite needs a usable wireless connection to its parent node
Typical fit Homes with Ethernet already installed, demanding links, or difficult wireless paths Homes where cable routing is impractical, or where a capable system has a strong wireless node link

This is a qualitative comparison, not a promise that every wired installation will outperform every wireless one in every measurement. Ethernet link speed, radio design, client location and the rest of the network all affect the result.

Is wired backhaul better than wireless for mesh Wi-Fi?

It is generally better when your priority is a predictable node-to-node connection and the system has suitable Ethernet ports. A cable removes the backhaul traffic from Wi-Fi airtime on that link, which can avoid competition with client traffic and the wireless hop between nodes. It may also help where walls or floors make a reliable wireless path difficult.

That does not mean wired backhaul will automatically make every device faster. The internet connection, the client’s Wi-Fi link, a slow Ethernet port or another constrained part of the network may still be the limiting factor. ASUS ROG Support summarizes the trade-off this way: “A wired Ethernet connection will ensure the best performance but requires more work, as you might need to connect Ethernet cables to every node.” (ASUS ROG Support)

Wireless systems differ in how they handle backhaul

Some systems share a radio between backhaul and client traffic, so those uses can compete for airtime. Others reserve a dedicated band for node-to-node communication, reducing that particular competition. A dedicated band does not eliminate the effects of signal quality, distance or interference, so “wireless backhaul” is not one uniform performance category. Check the design of the specific mesh system rather than assuming every wireless kit works the same way.

What independent testing can—and cannot—show

RTINGS tested Ubiquiti UniFi U6 Pro and U7 Pro access points with a UniFi Dream Router 7 as the main router. In that office setup, it reported better speed and consistency with wired backhaul, with the difference varying by band and setup (RTINGS’ Ethernet vs. wireless backhaul test). This is evidence about those tested products and conditions, not a controlled survey of all consumer mesh systems or homes; it does not establish a universal speed gain.

Does Ethernet backhaul make mesh Wi-Fi faster?

It can improve the node-to-node part of the connection by removing a wireless hop and freeing Wi-Fi airtime on a cable-connected link. Whether you notice a speed improvement depends on whether wireless backhaul was a bottleneck and on the rest of the path to your device and the internet. A wired link cannot exceed the capacity of its slowest relevant port, cable run or upstream network component. There is no general percentage increase that applies to every mesh network.

Do you need Ethernet for mesh Wi-Fi?

No. Wireless backhaul is an option for systems designed to connect nodes over Wi-Fi, and it is often the simpler choice when running cable is impractical. You do need to check the exact model: node Ethernet ports and support for wired backhaul vary by product and generation. For example, Google says Nest Wifi points do not have Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired, while Ethernet support differs among Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi products (Google’s guide to adding Wifi points).

If you use wireless backhaul, place each satellite where it can maintain a good connection to its parent node, following the manufacturer’s guidance. For Deco systems, TP-Link recommends checking satellite signal in the Deco app and discusses interference sources for 2.4 GHz; that advice is specific to Deco rather than a universal distance rule (TP-Link’s Deco placement guidance).

Can you mix wired and wireless backhaul?

Some systems support a mixed layout, with Ethernet on some node links and Wi-Fi on others. In TP-Link Deco, only physically wired node links use Ethernet; unwired links remain wireless. TP-Link says, “You do not need to wire every Deco unit. You can mix wired and wireless backhaul in the same network.” (TP-Link’s Deco Ethernet backhaul guide) Confirm mixed backhaul support for your own mesh system and check each node’s connection mode in its management app.

What to check before wiring mesh nodes

  • Node ports and link speed: Confirm that the relevant nodes have Ethernet ports and that their supported speeds suit your needs. A cable does not overcome a slower port elsewhere on the path.
  • Operating mode and topology: Router mode and access point mode can have different wiring rules. Follow the instructions for your exact model and mode; a topology that works on one mesh system may not work on another.
  • Switch compatibility: If you need a switch to connect multiple nodes, check the mesh maker’s wiring guidance. Google identifies managed-switch Spanning Tree/BPDU settings as a potential issue for its Wifi setup (Google’s guide to adding Wifi points).
  • Mixed-link behavior: If some nodes will remain wireless, confirm that the system supports that arrangement and that each wireless satellite has a usable link to its parent.

Vendor-specific example: TP-Link Deco

TP-Link’s guide, dated April 17, 2026, says to set up Deco units wirelessly first, then connect Ethernet; backhaul activates automatically. In Router mode, Deco satellites should connect to the main Deco LAN port or a switch connected to it. Access Point mode has different wiring options, and Deco supports mixed wired and wireless links under the guide’s instructions (TP-Link’s Deco Ethernet backhaul guide). These steps are for Deco and should not be treated as universal mesh wiring rules.

Vendor-specific example: Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi

Google’s instructions distinguish among product generations: Nest Wifi points lack Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired, while Ethernet support and product combinations vary for Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi. For supported wired points, Google recommends placing them downstream of the primary Wifi router, and notes a potential problem involving managed-switch Spanning Tree/BPDU settings (Google’s guide to adding Wifi points). Check the instructions for the specific products in your network before buying or connecting a switch.

Which backhaul should you choose?

  • Choose Ethernet if you have Ethernet jacks or can route cable cleanly, your nodes have suitable ports, and you want to reduce reliance on a wireless node link.
  • Choose wireless if cable routing is impractical and the satellite can maintain a good link to its parent. Check whether the system uses a dedicated backhaul radio or shares radio airtime with clients.
  • Consider a mix if some rooms have Ethernet and others do not, provided your system supports mixed backhaul. Verify each node’s link mode in the management app.
  • Check the full path before expecting a speed change: node ports, cabling and upstream components can limit a wired link, while client Wi-Fi and internet service remain separate parts of the connection.
