Start by checking that the accessory supports your exact iPhone, then remove any wallet and case, inspect the magnetic ring for debris, and test again. If it attaches but does not charge, troubleshoot power and charging separately: a magnetic connection does not prove the phone is charging.
Check that the accessory matches your iPhone
MagSafe compatibility depends on the specific iPhone and accessory. Apple says supported MagSafe chargers and battery packs snap to supported iPhones or their MagSafe cases or sleeves. The iPhone Air MagSafe Battery is a distinct product: Apple says it attaches only to iPhone Air. Check Apple’s current compatibility and use guidance for your accessory and model.
Do not assume similarly named battery products share the same compatibility. Apple’s technical specifications for the original MagSafe Battery Pack list selected iPhone 12, 13, and 14 models; that historical list should not be applied to newer battery products. Remove anything between the phone and accessory
Take off the wallet and loose objects
Remove an iPhone wallet before placing a MagSafe Charger or battery on the phone. Also check for cards or other objects between the iPhone and accessory. Apple’s MagSafe guidance and wireless charging guidance both address objects in the charging setup.

Test without the case
If the phone has a thick, metal, or battery case, remove it and try again. Apple warns that these case types can interfere with wireless charging. This test can help isolate the case, but Apple’s guidance does not say that every case affects magnetic attachment in the same way.
If removing the case solves the problem, choose a MagSafe-compatible case made for your exact iPhone model. Compatibility is not established for an unverified third-party case simply because it fits the phone.

Inspect the accessory’s magnetic ring
Look over the charger or battery’s magnetic surface and remove any visible debris. Apple notes that its MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Battery Pack contain magnets that can attract debris during everyday use. Follow Apple’s cleaning guidance; inspect rather than assuming debris is the cause.
If you are using a MagSafe Charger, check its setup
- Connect it to power first. Apple says plugging the MagSafe Charger in before placing the iPhone lets it verify conditions for maximum power.
- Set it face up on a flat surface. Keep it clear of metal objects and other foreign material.
- Place the iPhone on the charger and check the screen. Look for the charging indicator to confirm that charging has started.
Apple’s instructions cover setup and model-dependent power details; they do not establish that a charger is defective just because attachment or charging fails once. See Apple’s MagSafe Charger setup guidance.

Separate an attachment problem from a charging problem
If the accessory stays attached but the iPhone does not show that it is charging, the issue is not simply that it will not attach. Recheck the charger’s power and placement, and try a wired connection. Apple says an iPhone connected to USB power charges through that connection. If it charges by cable but MagSafe still fails after the checks above, the available Apple guidance does not identify which component is at fault. Contact Apple or the accessory maker for diagnosis rather than replacing parts based on a guess. Apple’s wireless charging guidance covers these charging considerations.

- Your exact iPhone model and the accessory’s supported-model list.
- Whether the problem goes away with the case removed.
- Whether you need magnetic attachment, charging, or both.
- For a charger, whether its version and power adapter suit your setup.
- For a battery, whether it is the original MagSafe Battery Pack or the iPhone Air-specific MagSafe Battery.
If the case is the confirmed obstacle, a compatible case for the exact iPhone model is the most targeted purchase. Consider replacing a charger or battery only after checking compatibility and trying the free tests above; those checks alone cannot prove which part has failed.
