For a quick conversion with LibreOffice, run mkdir -p csv-output, then soffice --headless --convert-to csv --outdir csv-output workbook.xlsx. Replace workbook.xlsx with your file’s path. CSV export is sheet-based: a normal export does not combine every worksheet into one file, and formatting and other workbook features are not retained.
Convert an Excel workbook with LibreOffice
LibreOffice Calc provides a direct terminal route using the soffice --convert-to export syntax. Install LibreOffice if needed, then create an output directory and run the conversion from a shell:
mkdir -p csv-output
soffice --headless --convert-to csv --outdir csv-output workbook.xlsxThe exported file is placed in csv-output. Substitute the actual workbook path; if the path contains spaces, quote it, for example "Quarterly report.xlsx". LibreOffice documents the command-line filter syntax and export options in its CSV Filter parameters help.
Choose which worksheet to export
A CSV is a flat text table, not a container for an entire multi-sheet workbook. The ordinary export workflow saves the current sheet. If you need every worksheet, use LibreOffice’s filter options to export each sheet as a separate CSV; that creates multiple files rather than merging sheets into one. Before converting a multi-sheet workbook, decide whether you want one particular worksheet or a separate CSV for each one. If your goal is a single combined table, plan that as a separate data-cleaning step rather than assuming CSV export will join the sheets.
Set delimiter, quoting and encoding for the recipient
CSV export settings determine how the receiving application interprets the file. Commas are common field separators, but semicolons or tabs may be required by a particular program. Fields containing the chosen separator need quoting so their contents are not mistaken for separate columns. Set the field delimiter, text delimiter and encoding to match the destination application, then inspect the exported file—especially if it contains non-ASCII characters. Decide whether formulas or calculated values belong in the CSV
LibreOffice can export formula expressions or their calculated values. Choose the behavior that suits the recipient and verify a few representative cells after conversion. If the CSV needs results, ensure formulas have current calculated values before export; if it needs expressions, confirm that the receiving system can use the exported formula text. If conversion is part of a repeatable data workflow, pandas can read a worksheet and write a DataFrame to CSV. For example, this pattern selects the first worksheet and omits the DataFrame index:

frame.to_csv("output.csv", index=False)The reader engine and dependencies required by read_excel() depend on the input format and installed packages. Check the pandas I/O documentation for supported formats and engines. For multiple worksheets, select and export each intentionally rather than expecting one CSV to preserve the workbook structure.
Type inference during spreadsheet reading can affect dates, missing values and identifiers with leading zeros; formula handling may also affect the values available to the script. Check these fields against your intended output, and preserve the original workbook if its formatting or spreadsheet features matter.

Which method should you use?

Check the output before relying on it
- Open or inspect the CSV and confirm the intended worksheet and rows were exported.
- Check columns containing delimiters, quotation marks, non-ASCII text, dates, leading zeros and formula results.
- Remember that CSV does not preserve cell formatting or the workbook’s full spreadsheet structure; keep the original Excel file when those features matter.
- If LibreOffice reports an error or behaves unexpectedly, diagnose the specific error and environment. The command-line documentation does not establish one universal fix for issues such as an already-open file or competing LibreOffice processes.
