If SmartThings is slow, stuck loading, or crashing on Android, restart your phone and test the app after each step below. Start with updates and basic network checks; force-stop and clear the app’s cache before trying disruptive fixes such as clearing its data or reinstalling it.
Work through these fixes in order
After each step, open SmartThings and check whether the problem is gone. Android menu names and locations can differ by phone maker and Android version.

Restart your phone
Restart the Android device, then try SmartThings again. The restart control varies by device. Google recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step so you can tell whether it resolved the issue.

Update SmartThings and Android
If SmartThings will not open, update it through the Play Store: Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available. Find SmartThings and install its update if one is listed. Samsung also documents an in-app route when the app opens: Menu > Settings > About SmartThings. See Samsung’s SmartThings update instructions.

Check for an Android system update as well. Its settings path varies by manufacturer; look in your phone’s Settings for a system or software update option.

Check whether it is SmartThings, the network, or the phone
Open another app that uses the internet. If practical, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try SmartThings again. Google recommends checking network and connection settings when an Android device is slow.

- If other apps also fail, or the whole phone is sluggish, investigate the connection or device rather than assuming SmartThings is the only problem.
- If other apps work and only SmartThings is affected, continue with the app-specific steps.

Check available storage
Google Android Help says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is general Android guidance, not a SmartThings-specific diagnostic threshold. If your phone is nearly full, free some storage and test the app again. Google’s Android performance guidance does not state a publication year.

Force-stop SmartThings and clear its cache
Open Android Settings > Apps > SmartThings, then choose Force stop. Reopen the app and test it. If it is still slow or will not load, return to SmartThings’ app settings, open Storage or the equivalent, and choose Clear cache. The wording and layout vary by Android device.

Clearing cache is a less disruptive step than clearing app data. Google notes that cached data can temporarily take up space and accumulates again as apps are used.
Use Location only for one documented crash scenario
Samsung describes a specific issue on non-Galaxy Android devices: after SmartThings is updated to version 1.8.45, entering Scan nearby can crash if the device’s Location setting is off. Samsung’s article, SmartThings app crashes on non-Galaxy Android devices, recommends turning on Location, ensuring SmartThings is up to date, and restarting the device for this case.

This is a narrow, documented condition—not a general fix for every loading problem, and not a claim that Location must stay on for all SmartThings functions.

If SmartThings is still broken while other apps work, consider clearing its app data or uninstalling and reinstalling it. These actions can erase saved app data, so use them only after the less disruptive steps above and be prepared to set up the app again. Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance warns that uninstalling an app erases saved data.

If one app continues to fail while other apps work, Google recommends contacting its developer. For SmartThings-specific problems, contact Samsung Support. An Android app that is slow or will not load is a different symptom from a hub or connected-device fault; resetting the SmartThings hub is not an appropriate first fix for this app problem.
