You can limit who sees personal posts without making every professional detail unreachable—but privacy settings rarely work as one all-or-nothing switch. Keep a deliberate professional profile or contact route available, then separately restrict posts, stories, tags, comments, and messages. The exact balance depends on the platform: LinkedIn, for example, says signed-in members can generally see profiles even when the public profile is turned off.
Decide what needs to stay discoverable
Before changing settings, decide what a prospective employer, client, or colleague should be able to find. That might be your name, role, portfolio, selected work samples, or a professional contact route. Make those details available to the audience you intend, rather than leaving personal posts public just to remain discoverable.
- Keep only the profile fields and work-related content that support your professional goals.
- Review personal contact details, birth date, home address, and location information separately from your posts.
- Choose whether each item should be visible to the public, platform members, approved followers or friends, or only you.
Make privacy changes in the right order
- Review profile fields. Check what appears on your profile page and which details are independently visible. Remove or restrict sensitive personal information where the platform allows it.
- Set the audience for future content. Narrow the default audience for posts and stories where appropriate, and choose an audience for individual posts when that option exists.
- Review older content. Use the platform’s activity, post, or privacy review tools to find older material that no longer belongs in your intended public presence.
- Control tags and mentions. Turn on review before tagged posts appear on your profile when available. Remember that the person who publishes a post controls its audience; your tag settings do not necessarily change who can see the original post.
- Limit unwanted interaction. Review who can follow or contact you, comment, mention you, or send messages. Use blocking controls if needed.
- Preview your account as an outsider. Check the platform’s visitor or public-view feature, or inspect the profile while logged out where possible. Recheck after account-type changes or platform updates.
Facebook: restrict posts, profile details, and tags separately
Open Settings & privacy and inspect the Audience and visibility categories. Facebook’s settings cover areas including profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking; available options can vary by profile type. When sharing, use the audience selector to choose an audience such as everyone, friends, or a specific audience. Review profile-and-tagging controls so other people’s posts do not automatically become part of your profile presentation. A post on someone else’s profile remains subject to that profile owner’s audience settings, and people tagged in a post may see it along with their friends. Do not assume that making posts private also hides every profile element: Facebook says your current profile picture and cover photo are public. Search-engine results can also linger in cache or search memory after you change settings, so a privacy change does not promise immediate removal from search. Instagram: choose between a private personal account and a public professional presence
Instagram lets accounts require approval for new followers or allow anyone to follow. For a personal account, consider requiring approval and review how tags and mentions appear. Meta’s privacy guidance links to Instagram privacy and tag-management resources.

If professional discovery matters, decide whether a separate professional account or selected public professional content is a better fit than making personal material broadly visible. A private-account setting should not be treated as a promise that every profile element or contact route remains visible to prospective clients or employers. Verify what a visitor can actually see in the app after changing settings.

LinkedIn: public-profile controls do not hide you from signed-in members
LinkedIn is best treated as a professional profile with visibility controls, not as a fully private social account. LinkedIn says profiles are generally fully visible to signed-in members. Its public-profile settings govern visibility outside LinkedIn, such as to search-engine users, and let you limit individual sections or turn off the public profile. LinkedIn offers separate controls for profile and privacy preferences, posts and shares, profile photo, last name, and birth date. Contact information in the Contact Info section is generally visible only to first-degree connections, subject to exceptions LinkedIn describes; website, blog, or social handles may be visible to all members. Avoid adding sensitive personal information: LinkedIn says members are not required to include it.
Visibility can extend beyond a profile page. Depending on settings, a profile version may appear in search engines, mail or calendar mini-profiles, aggregators, talent or lead tools, or PDF printouts. Check the public profile view after making changes and consider which professional details you want discoverable beyond LinkedIn.

TikTok: combine account privacy with post and interaction controls
TikTok offers public and private account modes. With a private account, you approve followers who can watch your videos or LIVE videos and see your follower and following lists. Other people cannot Duet, Stitch, or download your videos. TikTok also offers individual post audiences, including everyone, friends or followers, and private, along with separate comment and direct-message controls. Check the trade-offs before you choose

These controls are distinct: audience scope, content type, professional discoverability, interaction permissions, and exceptions such as other people’s posts or search caches all need separate attention. Menu names and feature availability can change, so revisit the platform’s current settings when your account type or career needs change.
