Choose SE 3 if you want an Always-On Apple Watch with core fitness, safety, heart-rate, sleep-tracking, and connectivity features without paying for Series 12-only capabilities. The right value depends on the exact size, GPS or cellular version, and current price.

Specifications and feature availability can vary by software, region, language, and paired iPhone. Battery figures are manufacturer estimates from different test procedures and years, not a controlled head-to-head result; actual use changes battery life.
Which model is better for your needs?
Choose Series 12 for its additional health tools
Series 12 is the better fit if you specifically want the ECG app, hypertension notifications, or readiness and recovery information. Apple says Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and measures HRV up to 24 times more often than the preceding model. Those are Apple’s product claims, not independent comparative measurements. Apple describes the Series 12 Vitals app as intended for wellness, not medical use.
SE 3 is not devoid of health features: it offers heart-rate tracking and alerts, HRV, a sleep score, and sleep apnea notifications. Apple says sleep apnea notifications are intended to detect signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in adults 18 or older who have not been diagnosed. A notification is not a diagnosis.

Choose SE 3 if the core Apple Watch experience is enough
For workouts, heart-rate alerts, sleep tracking, safety features, and an Always-On screen, SE 3 covers many everyday needs without Series 12’s extra health capabilities. If ECG or Series 12’s other specific features would not affect your decision, compare the actual offers for equivalent sizes and GPS or cellular connectivity before paying more.
Consider display, fit, and case material
Both watches have Always-On displays. Series 12 offers the higher stated peak brightness and larger size choices; its 42mm and 46mm cases may suit someone who wants more screen area. SE 3’s 40mm and 44mm sizes may be a better wrist fit, while its case choice is aluminum only. Try the size if possible, since case dimensions alone do not determine comfort.

Series 12 also offers titanium and ceramic in addition to aluminum. If you prefer one of those materials, SE 3 is not an equivalent option.
Battery life: compare the estimates carefully
Apple estimates up to 24 hours of everyday use for Series 12 and up to 18 hours of normal use for SE 3. Apple’s published Series 12 test includes a defined mix of time checks, notifications, app use, workout and music playback, sleep tracking, and phone connectivity; Apple’s SE 3 product page also lists up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. Because the procedures differ, the figures are useful as each model’s manufacturer estimate, not proof that Series 12 will last exactly six hours longer in your routine.

Water resistance and activities
Apple lists SE models as water resistant to 50 meters and suitable for shallow-water swimming. Apple says Series 12 can be used for shallow-water activities and lists Series 10 and later for snorkeling to 6 meters. Apple cautions against scuba diving, waterskiing, and other activities involving high-velocity water. Water resistance is not the same as being waterproof; check Apple’s current model-specific comparison and water guidance for the activity you have in mind.

Apple announced Series 12 with a U.S. starting price of $399 on September 9, 2026. Apple’s January 2026 article reported SE 3 starting at $249, but that figure is not a confirmed current price. A current price gap cannot be established from those differently dated figures. Check current listings for the precise size and GPS or GPS + Cellular configuration you want before deciding whether Series 12 is worth more.

For Series 12 with watchOS 27, Apple specifies an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27 or later. Requirements can change with software updates; confirm the current compatibility information for the watch and iPhone you plan to use.

- Pick Series 12 if you want ECG, hypertension notifications, readiness and recovery metrics, the brighter display, larger case options, premium-material choices, or Apple’s longer battery estimate.
- Pick SE 3 if an Always-On display plus everyday fitness, safety, heart-rate, and sleep features meets your needs and you do not require ECG or Series 12-specific tools.
