After an Android update, first confirm which version is installed, then review security, app permissions, battery use, and any lock-screen content that matters to you. A short period of extra battery drain can be normal while a Pixel finishes setting up new software. Settings names and availability vary by Pixel model and Android version, so use the closest equivalent if a path differs.
1. Confirm the update is installed
Open Settings > About phone > Android version to see the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. To check for an update, go to Settings > System > Software updates; depending on the Pixel, the menu may instead say System update. A downloaded Pixel update becomes active the next time the phone restarts. Google’s Pixel update instructions describe these status screens and the restart step.
2. Review device security
Open Settings > Security and look for the device and Google Account security status and any recommended actions. This area may include Play Protect, Find My Device, screen lock and biometrics, security update status, Google Play system update, and a Google Account security checkup. Treat this as a review, not a reason to change settings that already match your needs. Google’s Pixel security settings guide covers the available controls.
3. Check app permissions and privacy
Review access app by app or by permission type. For an individual app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. To see which apps have a particular kind of access, open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager. Google documents both approaches in its Android app permissions guide.

Pay particular attention to location, camera, microphone, photos and videos, contacts, and notifications. Keep access that an app genuinely needs, and narrow or remove access that it does not. Where offered, location access may include options such as while using the app rather than all the time.
For a broader privacy review, look for Privacy Dashboard and controls for camera and microphone access, clipboard notices, and notification visibility on the lock screen. Labels and availability can differ across Android versions and devices; Google’s Pixel privacy settings guidance lists relevant controls.

4. Check battery use before changing settings
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage to inspect consumption by apps and system activity. Google says extra battery drain after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads, optimizes, and sets up the new software. That explanation does not mean every unusually high drain is update-related; check which app or system activity is using power. See Google’s Pixel battery usage instructions.
Google generally recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. If you changed those settings to address a problem, review them rather than turning them off by default. Google’s Adaptive Battery guidance explains the feature.

If unusual drain continues after a few days, use Google’s battery troubleshooting steps and investigate apps showing high use. Google advises seeking help if the unusual drain persists; it does not promise that every case will resolve on a fixed schedule.
5. Review what appears on the lock screen
If you use At a Glance, check its topic controls and whether the information it shows—including, in some cases, content from notifications—is appropriate for your lock screen. Also review the setting for sensitive notification content on the lock screen if you do not want those details visible there. Google’s At a Glance guide explains its content controls.

Do not assume a setting keeps the same name across versions: for example, Android 16 uses “outline text” where Android 15 used “high contrast text.” Your Pixel’s installed version, shown under Settings > About phone > Android version, helps explain why a label may differ.

- Confirm the Android version and update status, and restart if an update is waiting to activate.
- Check security recommendations and account protections.
- Make sure each app’s sensitive permissions match what you want it to do.
- Inspect battery usage before changing battery features; distinguish temporary setup activity from persistent app-specific drain.
- Check At a Glance and lock-screen notification visibility if you use them.
Google’s guidance covers multiple Pixel models and Android versions, not one universal layout. If you cannot find an exact label, search Settings for the feature name or look for the equivalent control in your version.
