NTFS disk scanners can find file metadata without opening and reading every file’s contents because the filesystem keeps a Master File Table (MFT): a structured set of records describing files and where their information is stored. That design can make enumeration efficient, but it does not guarantee a particular scan time, and it is not the same as reading file contents or recovering deleted files.

What the MFT stores

The MFT is a special file maintained by NTFS. Microsoft says an NTFS volume has at least one MFT entry for every file, including an entry for the MFT itself. These entries contain file information as attributes, such as size, timestamps, permissions, and data-location information. Some information can be stored outside the MFT, with an entry describing it. Microsoft’s MFT overview explains this arrangement.

Microsoft’s developer notes describe the MFT as a sequence of file record segments. A file reference points to a base record. If a file’s attributes do not fit there, an attribute list can link to additional records. Those layout details in the notes apply to NTFS volume version 3. Microsoft’s NTFS developer notes provide the version-specific description.

Records are metadata, not necessarily file contents

An MFT record can describe a file without holding all of its data. For example, a scanner can inspect file records to learn that files exist and read their metadata without first opening each file and reading its full payload. The MFT therefore acts as an organized starting point for enumeration, not as a complete copy of every file.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why scanning the MFT can be efficient

When a scanner enumerates records, it can discover many files by walking structured filesystem metadata instead of performing a separate content read for each one. This is the architectural reason a metadata scan may be quicker than a task that must inspect every file’s bytes.

That explanation is not a benchmark. Scan time depends on the scanner’s implementation, the volume, the task being performed, and other conditions. The Microsoft material cited here does not establish a universal speedup, percentage, or completion time. It would be misleading to say that an MFT scan is always instant or always faster in a specific amount.

How MFT enumeration differs from finding a path or reading a file

Operation What it examines What it answers
MFT enumeration File records and their attributes Which file records and metadata are represented on the volume
Directory lookup Directory index information How a name is located within a directory and associated with a path
Content reading The file data at the locations described by filesystem metadata What bytes the file contains

These operations are related but distinct. Directories contain index information; a technical reference describes larger directory indexes as B-trees that can point to external clusters when entries do not fit within the MFT structure. The NTFS technical reference describes that directory-index behavior. A scanner that lists records is not necessarily traversing every path or reading each file’s contents.

NTFS also maintains a separate metadata file called $Bitmap, which indicates which clusters are in use, according to Microsoft’s developer notes. That allocation map is different from enumerating file records: it concerns cluster allocation rather than serving as a list of file names and attributes.

What happens to MFT records when files are deleted

When a file is deleted, its MFT entry can be marked free and later reused. The MFT’s allocated space does not necessarily shrink when that happens. Microsoft’s overview and support documentation describe these behaviors. MFT overview and Microsoft Support’s MFT article.

As a result, a scanner encountering an old or freed record does not prove that the file is still present or recoverable. The record may have been reused, and the file’s data or allocation state may have changed. Finding metadata and recovering usable file contents are different outcomes.

MFT zone

NTFS reserves an area intended to help the MFT remain contiguous as it grows. The MFT zone is not a separate index that instantly finds files; allocation behavior and fragmentation depend on space use and workload. Microsoft’s overview discusses the zone and its allocation behavior.

File record segment size

Microsoft Support describes a created file’s record as a File Record Segment (FRS) and gives its size as 1 KB in that article. Treat that as documentation-specific context rather than a guaranteed size for every NTFS configuration. Microsoft Support’s article is the source for that figure.

What this means when choosing a scan

  • If you need a list of files and their metadata, a scanner that enumerates filesystem records may avoid reading every file’s contents.
  • If you need names and full paths, directory-index lookups also matter; record enumeration and path resolution are not interchangeable.
  • If you need to inspect what files contain, metadata enumeration alone is not enough: the contents must be read.
  • If you are trying to recover deleted files, an old record is only a clue, not proof that the file’s data remains intact or recoverable.
