You can use an unactivated Windows 11 installation, but Microsoft does not publish a complete, current list of every feature it restricts. Microsoft says critical security updates remain available for non-genuine Windows; other updates and benefits may be limited. Reports of an activation watermark and personalization limits come from community answers, not a comprehensive Microsoft specification.
To check your own status, open Settings > System > Activation. If Windows is not activated, the next step is to confirm that you have a valid license for the edition installed—not to assume that every Windows feature or update is blocked.
What still works—and what Microsoft confirms
Microsoft’s published activation guidance explains how to activate Windows and check its status, but it does not inventory all features available or unavailable when Windows 11 is unactivated. That means broad claims such as “everything works indefinitely” or “Windows blocks all updates” are not established by the official guidance reviewed here.
Microsoft does state that critical security updates remain available even when Windows is not genuine. It cautions that other updates and benefits may be reserved for genuine copies. This is not a promise that every optional update, download, or feature will be available. See Microsoft’s explanation of genuine Windows.

Watermark and personalization reports
Answers in a Microsoft-hosted community Q&A report an activation watermark and limits on personalization. These are community reports, not a complete, current Microsoft feature specification, so treat them as possible visible effects rather than a guaranteed list of restrictions. The Q&A is available at Microsoft Learn Q&A.
How to check whether Windows 11 is activated
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Activation.
- Review the activation status and any message Windows shows there.
Microsoft identifies the Activation page as the place to check status. Activation pairs a product key or digital license with the device’s hardware configuration; activation status by itself does not establish that a copy is genuine. Microsoft describes genuineness and validation as separate licensing matters. See Activate Windows and About Genuine Windows.

What you need to activate Windows
Microsoft lists two activation entitlements: a digital license or a 25-character product key. Which one applies depends on how Windows was acquired. A boxed retail copy from an authorized retailer is one possible source of a product key; Microsoft explains potential key locations in Find your Windows product key.
Check the Windows edition before buying anything
The license must match the installed edition. A license for Windows 11 Home will not activate Windows 11 Pro, or vice versa. Check the edition shown on the Activation page before purchasing a license, and confirm the seller and applicable license terms. Microsoft’s activation instructions cover the matching requirement and purchase routes at Activate Windows.

Do not assume a low-priced key is valid
A product key’s format alone does not prove that it grants a valid license. The available Microsoft guidance supports using Microsoft or an authorized retailer; it does not establish that a specific third-party listing is legitimate.
How to troubleshoot activation problems
If you have a digital license
If Windows has a digital license but remains unactivated, Microsoft’s Activation troubleshooter may help. It requires signing in as an administrator and appears only when Windows 11 is not activated. Follow Microsoft’s instructions at Using the Windows Activation troubleshooter.

If you recently changed hardware
A significant hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can leave Windows unable to find a license associated with the device. Microsoft says linking your Microsoft account to the digital license can help with reactivation. After the change, use the Activation troubleshooter as directed in Microsoft’s hardware-change reactivation guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Activation is not the same as proving Windows is genuine
Microsoft describes activation as associating a product key or digital entitlement with a device’s hardware configuration. It says that activation itself does not evaluate whether a copy is genuine. Validation is a distinct process involving critical licensing files, and Microsoft says validation is required for certain updates and downloads. For that reason, an “activated” status and a “genuine” status should not be treated as interchangeable.
