Google lists both Pixel 4 models as no longer receiving Android version or security updates; Android 13 was the last major Android version in Google’s published rollout evidence. The practical limit depends on the phone’s condition, the apps you rely on, and whether you are comfortable using a device without ongoing Google security patches.
What “still working” means for a Pixel 4
End of support does not switch off the phone. If its hardware remains functional, it may continue to start, connect to networks, and run apps that still support its software. But continued operation is not the same as continued support: Google no longer provides the Pixel 4 with Android version updates or security updates under its regular Pixel update policy. Google’s Pixel update policy lists the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL among phones that no longer receive either kind of update.
That means there is no guaranteed date when the handset will stop working, and no single remaining-lifespan figure applies to every Pixel 4. Apps may continue to work for years or stop working sooner as their publishers change requirements. Physical wear, especially battery runtime, can also make a phone impractical before it stops powering on.
What Android version does the Pixel 4 support?
Android 13 is the latest major version shown in the official evidence for the Pixel 4: Google’s August 15, 2022 Android 13 rollout announcement included Pixel 4 among the eligible devices. Google’s Android 13 announcement records that rollout; Google’s current update-policy page is the source for the phone’s present support status.

Google identifies the Pixel 4 as a 2019 phone originally released with Android 10. Its hardware specification page describes an original commitment of three years of Android version and security updates from first availability on the U.S. Google Store. That was the launch-era commitment, not a promise that the phone itself would last three years or a current support extension. Google’s Pixel 4 specifications provide those model details.
How to check the update state on your own phone
Menu wording can vary slightly by Android version. Google says these update details are available in Settings:

- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone to check the Android version and build number.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates to review the Android security update and Google Play system update. Follow Google’s current update instructions if the labels differ on your handset.
Google’s instructions for checking and updating Android explain where to find update information. A recent Google Play system update is a separate status from Pixel firmware support; it does not mean Google has resumed Android version or security updates for the Pixel 4.
How to decide whether yours is still practical
Consider what you use it for
Using an unsupported phone for low-sensitivity tasks is a different risk decision from relying on it for work, banking, account recovery, or other sensitive activity. Because Google no longer supplies its regular Pixel security updates, newly discovered system vulnerabilities may not be addressed through those updates. An app opening successfully does not establish that the device is an appropriate choice for sensitive use.

Check every essential app
There is no universal app-compatibility end date for the Pixel 4. App publishers set their own minimum Android versions and device requirements, and Google’s update pages do not publish a future compatibility schedule for individual apps. Check the current requirements from each app publisher for the apps you need; do not assume that all banking, payment, or streaming apps either work or fail on Android 13.
Assess the hardware separately
Check battery runtime, available storage, screen condition, charging, and the likely cost of repairs. Google lists a 2800 mAh battery for the Pixel 4, but that capacity specification does not tell you the present condition of a particular handset. Lithium-ion batteries can lose capacity and runtime with use. Google’s battery-program page discusses the Pixel 4a specifically, so its program details should not be treated as applying to Pixel 4. Google’s Pixel 4a battery information provides general battery-aging context, not a Pixel 4 repair program.

Would a custom ROM restore official support?
No. Installing a modified version of Android is not the same as receiving official Google Pixel updates. Google warns that modified Android versions do not get its automatic security updates and may leave the device and data more vulnerable. Google’s guidance on modified Android addresses that risk. A custom ROM may have its own update process, but it should not be presented as a continuation of official Google support.

Plan to migrate to a supported device when you need current manufacturer security updates, an essential app no longer supports Android 13, or keeping the hardware working would cost more than it is worth to you. If the main problem is battery runtime, a replacement part may be an option, but confirm it is compatible with the exact Pixel 4 model and understand that a battery repair does not restore software updates.
