To share two or more computers across multiple monitors, connect each computer’s video outputs to the matching computer input group on a KVM that switches the required number of displays. Connect the KVM’s monitor outputs to your displays, then connect each computer’s USB upstream link so the keyboard and mouse attached to the KVM control the selected computer. Port layouts and cable counts vary by model, so follow its manual.
Before connecting anything: check compatibility
Write down how many computers and monitors you want to share, the video outputs on each computer, the inputs on each monitor, and the KVM’s ports. Also note your target resolution and refresh rate. A connector that physically fits does not guarantee that a KVM supports the display mode you need.
- Count the display signals. For two independently routed monitors, choose a KVM designed to switch both display signals for each computer. A single-monitor KVM will not route two displays independently.
- Check the computer’s outputs. Make sure each computer can provide the number and type of video signals your KVM requires. If you plan to use USB-C for video, confirm that the computer’s USB-C port supports display output; the connector alone does not prove it. ASUS explains this requirement in its monitor KVM guidance.
- Verify display modes and operating-system limits. Check the exact KVM’s supported resolution and refresh rate, plus host and operating-system compatibility. For example, Anker notes that its cited KVM does not support dual extended displays on macOS. That limitation is product-specific, not a universal rule for KVMs.
- Check USB connections. Determine how each computer connects to the KVM’s USB upstream port and where your keyboard and mouse will plug in.
Choose the right KVM layout
A dual-monitor setup generally needs a KVM with two display outputs and matching computer-side input groups for each host. Match the connectors—such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C—and the supported display modes to your actual equipment. As one example, StarTech’s SV231DPDDUA2 is a dual-DisplayPort KVM for two computers and shared USB peripherals; it is an example of a configuration, not a universal recommendation.
Some monitors have a built-in KVM. This can share that monitor and its attached USB peripherals between computers, but it does not establish that the monitor can switch multiple monitors together. Check the monitor manual to see which sources and USB devices its built-in KVM controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect the computers, monitors, and USB devices
- Connect video from each computer. Run the required video cable or cables from each computer to the corresponding computer input group on the KVM. For a dual-monitor KVM, connect both required display signals for each computer. Use the port labels and wiring diagram in the exact model’s manual; USB-C and dock-style designs may route signals differently from conventional dual-DisplayPort models.
- Connect the monitors. Run cables from the KVM’s console or display outputs to the monitor inputs. Check that each cable and port supports your intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Connect USB upstream links. Connect each computer to its matching USB upstream port on the KVM. Video carries the picture; this separate USB path lets shared peripherals such as the keyboard and mouse control the selected computer. Dell’s monitor KVM setup guidance describes separate video and USB connections.
- Attach the keyboard and mouse. Plug them into the KVM’s designated peripheral ports. If you are using a monitor’s built-in KVM, connect each computer’s USB upstream link to the monitor instead.
- Map USB to the active source if needed. Some monitor KVMs require a menu setting to associate a USB upstream connection with a video input. BenQ describes this requirement for a particular HDMI-source arrangement; follow your monitor’s own menu instructions rather than assuming the mapping is automatic. BenQ’s setup guide explains its USB source selection.
Handle USB-C and MST carefully
USB-C video requires display output
A USB-C port can support data and power without sending video. Confirm that the computer supports display output over the port and that the KVM accepts the relevant USB-C video mode before relying on a single USB-C cable.
MST depends on the host, operating system, and KVM
DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can carry multiple display streams over a supported connection, but it is not a universal way to get two displays through one cable. For its CKS202-P23 / CKS0202-P23 family, TESmart describes a one-cable, two-display MST setup for a Windows PC with DisplayPort 1.2 support. The same product FAQ says its cited setup does not use MST on macOS, Ubuntu, and other operating systems, and calls for two USB-C connections in those cases. Treat those instructions as specific to that product family; check your own KVM, computer, and operating system.

Select a computer and test the setup
Switch using the KVM’s button, hotkey, or monitor menu, as specified in its manual. Confirm that the selected computer appears on the intended monitors and that the keyboard and mouse control that computer. If a display does not appear or runs at the wrong mode, check the port assignments, cable connections, host output capabilities, and the KVM’s supported resolution and refresh rate.
If you need displays to remain detected during switching or want windows to retain their positions, look for the KVM’s EDID or display-emulation specifications. Switching behavior varies; do not assume every model preserves monitor detection or window placement.
