Unplug immediately if you hear popping from an adapter or cable, see damage or sparks away from the plug blades, notice unusual heat, or suspect moisture. A faint hiss or buzz is not enough by itself to identify a fault; the source and accompanying symptoms matter.
When to stop charging immediately
Stop using the charger and disconnect it from power if it is safe to do so when you notice any of these signs:
- Popping sounds from inside the AC wall adapter or anywhere on the AC power cable. Apple lists this as a sign of damage in its power-adapter and cable safety guidance.
- Frayed, split, or otherwise damaged cable insulation; a cracked or damaged adapter casing; or bent or damaged plug prongs.
- Sparks away from the plug blades, or equipment that becomes unusually hot.
- Liquid on or near the iPhone, cable connector, or charging port.
Do not keep testing an accessory that shows these warning signs. Apple warns that damaged charging equipment or charging while moisture is present can create a risk of fire, electric shock, injury, or damage. For broader device safety information, see Apple’s iPhone safety guide.
If the iPhone or connector may be wet
Do not charge by cable until the iPhone and cable connector are completely dry. If liquid is in the connector, gently tap the iPhone with the connector facing down to help remove excess liquid, then leave it in a dry place with airflow. Apple says not to use external heat, compressed air, rice, or an object in the connector. Its handling guidance says to allow at least five hours after liquid exposure before charging or connecting an accessory. Find where the noise is coming from
Without touching damaged equipment or putting your ear against it, listen from a safe distance and identify the apparent source: the adapter brick, cable or plug area, iPhone speaker, or wireless charging puck. Note whether the noise stops when charging is disconnected, and whether it changes with audio playback, scrolling, or a different charging method. A short recording may help you describe the symptom to support, but it does not diagnose the cause.
Keep track of what you change during troubleshooting. If you swap accessories or outlets, change one item at a time; that can show whether the noise follows the power source, a particular accessory, or the phone.

Check a wired charging setup
Use these checks only if the phone and accessories are dry and there are no stop-use warning signs.
- Inspect the cable and adapter. Look over the cable sheathing and connectors, adapter casing, and plug prongs. Do not use damaged equipment.
- Confirm the connections. Make sure the cable is firmly seated in the iPhone and adapter, and that the adapter is firmly connected to the outlet.
- Try another wall outlet. If the sound changes or stops, note that before changing anything else.
- Compare with known-good compatible equipment. Try a cable and adapter that fit your exact iPhone model and meet applicable local regulations and safety standards. Apple permits compliant third-party accessories, but an unfamiliar product should not be assumed to meet those standards.
- Check the iPhone charging port if charging is unreliable. Apple recommends checking for debris; remove visible debris carefully and do not insert anything if the connector could be wet. Restarting the iPhone is another basic step in Apple’s charging troubleshooting guidance.
Compare whether the sound follows the brick, cable, outlet, wireless charger, or phone, and whether it stops when charging is disconnected. If the adapter itself is identified as the source, replacing it with a compatible, compliant adapter may address that accessory; it does not establish a fix for noise coming from the iPhone speaker.

Account for warmth without treating it as a diagnosis
A little warmth during charging can be normal. If an iPhone gets too warm or too cold, charging may slow or pause and resume after its temperature returns to an appropriate range. Apple recommends an ambient charging range of 32–95°F (0–35°C). Move the phone and charger to a cooler, ventilated place, keep them out of direct sunlight, and remove the case if the phone regularly heats up in it. Apple says charging temperature protections apply to wired and wireless charging; see its temperature guidance.
What reports of iPhone 17 Pro speaker static establish
On December 30, 2025, Juli Clover at MacRumors reported user complaints of static or hiss from the speakers while charging on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The accounts described different charging methods, including Apple chargers and MagSafe; some users said unplugging stopped the sound. The article also relayed one user’s report of escalation to Apple engineers. These are user reports, not an Apple technical advisory: they do not establish a cause, how often the issue occurs, whether it affects all devices, or whether a later software or hardware change resolved it. When to contact Apple
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if a sound seems to come from the iPhone speaker and persists with known-good, compliant charging equipment, or if the phone is damaged. Apple says iPhone should be serviced by a trained technician; do not open the phone yourself. Persistent charging trouble is also a reason to seek service after working through Apple’s basic checks.
