Keep the full-resolution, unmarked master off your public site. Create a separate, smaller web export, apply the watermark to that copy, and upload only the watermarked export. Then check the live gallery to confirm it serves that file—not an unmarked original or download.
Build a safe master-to-gallery workflow
- Preserve the original. Keep the full-resolution master in storage you control and maintain a separate backup. Do not overwrite your only unmarked file. The UK Government’s digital-imaging procedure, written for evidential images, recommends preserving secure original-format copies and protecting masters with access controls and tamper-evident logs or equivalent safeguards: UK Government digital imaging procedure. A practical preparation guide likewise recommends keeping originals on your computer and in backups rather than putting them online: Watermark.ws.
- Make a separate web export. Export a copy at a size suited to your gallery’s layout. Watermark.ws recommends about 2,000–2,500 pixels on the long edge for many portfolio uses; this is a vendor recommendation, not a universal standard. Use less if your design allows, or more if needed for a clear, high-quality display.
- Apply the watermark to the export. Bake the mark into the image pixels that will be displayed. Use a consistent placement and size; ensure it remains visible in the large view without obscuring the work.
- Upload only the watermarked export. Do not upload the unmarked master unless you have a specific, controlled reason and have verified that visitors cannot access it.
- Keep a separate backup. A backup protects the original if your working storage fails; it does not change what the gallery exposes.
Check what visitors can actually see and download
A platform’s watermark setting may not cover every file it serves. The mark protects only the rendition on which it appears. Some services remove it from originals, high-resolution downloads, prints, or certain web-sized downloads.
- Check the image in the gallery grid, lightbox, and zoom view.
- Confirm the largest displayed rendition is the reduced, watermarked export you intended to publish.
- Test image links and download options. Make sure they do not reveal an unmarked full-resolution file.
- Check the platform’s original-access, download, and maximum-display-size settings.
- After changing watermark or access settings, revisit the published gallery. Some changes require republishing; some platforms generate a watermarked copy asynchronously and may show the original until that copy is ready.
These behaviors are platform-specific. For example, SmugMug says originals are not watermarked and recommends blocking original access for watermarking to be effective: SmugMug watermark help. Pixieset says gallery watermarks apply to display images, are removed from print orders and original/high-resolution downloads, and are removed from web-sized downloads by default unless configured otherwise: Pixieset watermark help. Visual Portfolio says it uses a generated copy when one exists for the current watermark settings; until generation finishes, the original may be shown: Visual Portfolio watermark documentation. Folio notes that image, watermark, display, and download-setting changes remain drafts until republished: Folio help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose watermark and access controls for the risk
A visible watermark supplies attribution and can discourage casual reuse, but it is not copy prevention. A visitor can capture any image their browser displays. Right-click blocking does not prevent screenshots; SmugMug also describes right-click protection as not foolproof.

Reduce the usefulness of a copied image by serving a smaller rendition, watermarking the pixels actually displayed, and disabling downloads or original access where appropriate. A subtle, consistent mark can suit a clean portfolio grid; a more prominent mark may make sense for higher-risk previews. In either case, check it at the largest displayed size and avoid covering important details.

- Unlisted: Anyone with the link can access it, even if it is not listed on your portfolio home page or intended for search engines. This is not private authentication.
- Password-protected or expiring: Use these controls for limited client proofing when supported.
- Private: Restricts access to the account under the platform’s definition of private.
Folio documents private, unlisted, and public gallery options, as well as password and expiry controls: Folio help. Check the controls available on your own plan.
Compare gallery behavior before choosing a platform
Evaluate the actual rendition and access rules rather than relying on a general claim that a service “supports watermarks.” Product behavior can differ by view, download type, plan, and whether processing or republishing has finished.

| Platform | Watermark and file behavior | Relevant controls or caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Folio | Supports text and image watermarks with configurable position, opacity, and size. | Describes pairing watermarks with maximum-resolution limits. Changes to image, watermark, display, and download settings remain drafts until republished. See Folio help. |
| SmugMug | States that originals are not watermarked. Its default watermark appears only on images with a longest side of at least 801 px. | Provides display-size and download controls; recommends blocking original access if watermarking is meant to protect displayed files. The 801 px threshold is a product specification, not a general standard. See SmugMug watermark help. |
| Pixieset | Watermarks display images, but removes watermarks from prints and original/high-resolution downloads. Web-sized downloads are unwatermarked by default unless configured otherwise. | Documents web-sized download options of 640 px, 1,024 px, or 2,048 px and high-resolution downloads at 3,600 px. These are product specifications, not universal recommendations. See Pixieset watermark help. |
| Visual Portfolio | Uses a generated watermarked copy when one exists for the current settings; the original can appear before generation finishes. | Verify that processing has completed and inspect the live output. See Visual Portfolio watermark documentation. |
Before committing to a workflow, ask whether watermarking applies to the exact grid, lightbox, and zoom renditions; what happens to original and high-resolution downloads; whether maximum display dimensions can be capped; whether downloads can be disabled; which visibility, password, or expiry controls are offered; and whether changes trigger regeneration or require republishing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Metadata and copyright are separate from access control
A visible watermark is different from embedded metadata and Content Credentials. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation, last updated February 23, 2026, says JPG and PNG exports support Content Credentials. Attaching credentials embeds them in the file and increases its size; Adobe notes they can be stripped when published online. Publishing credentials to Adobe’s cloud can allow recovery if they are stripped, but stores them in Adobe’s public cloud: Adobe Photoshop Content Credentials documentation. These options can document attribution and edit history; they do not prevent access to or copying of an image.

In the United States, the Copyright Office says original photographs are generally protected from the moment they are fixed, and the photographer is generally the initial owner, subject to exceptions such as qualifying work made for hire. It also says registration is required before a U.S. work’s owner can bring an infringement lawsuit in federal court. The Office summarizes the first point as: “Copyright protection exists from the moment you take a picture.” These are U.S.-specific basics; ownership and remedies elsewhere depend on local law: U.S. Copyright Office: What Is Copyright?.
