To verify an Ethereum zero-knowledge proof on-chain, submit the proof and the expected public inputs to a verifier contract built for that proof system, circuit, and verification key. The verifier checks the proof; the application contract must also check that the public inputs and the result are relevant to the action being requested. The exact function call and data encoding depend on the deployment.

What on-chain verification establishes

A verifier contract checks whether a proof is valid under the cryptographic rules associated with its proof system and verification key, for the public inputs supplied with it. A successful check establishes that the proof satisfies that configured statement. It does not, by itself, establish every claim an application might make about the proof or its real-world meaning.

Ethereum.org describes a zero-knowledge proof as a way to prove a statement’s validity without revealing the statement itself. But validity and zero knowledge are separate properties: a validity proof does not automatically keep data private. What is revealed depends on the proof construction and on what the application publishes on-chain.

What the verifier receives

A verifier call generally needs two things: the proof and the public inputs that define the statement the verifier checks. Public inputs are values available to the verifier contract; they are not necessarily all the private data used to construct the proof.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a rollup, ethereum.org’s example includes the pre-state root, post-state root, batch root, and transaction inputs. The verifier’s expected input list and ordering are specific to its circuit and interface. Supplying the right values in the wrong order, using an incompatible schema, or encoding them incorrectly can cause a call to fail or check a different statement than intended.

The proof and inputs must match the deployed verifier’s proof system, circuit and circuit version, verification key, and input schema. Do not assume that two contracts described as “zk-SNARK verifiers” accept interchangeable proofs or calldata.

A deployment-specific verification workflow

  1. Identify the target chain and contract. Find the verifier contract or the application entry point that invokes it. Confirm the chain and address against the deployment’s documentation and artifacts. If source code is published, Ethereum.org’s source-verification guidance describes comparing compiled bytecode with the deployed bytecode; this helps check the source-to-deployment match, not the circuit’s correctness.
  2. Confirm the proof configuration. Establish which proof system, circuit, circuit version, verification key, and public-input schema the deployed verifier expects. ERC-8084 proposes metadata fields that can help make such details discoverable, but it is an interoperability aid: check whether the particular contract implements it and verify the metadata against the deployment artifacts.
  3. Prepare the proof and public inputs in the expected format. Use the ABI and implementation for that deployment. There is no universal Ethereum verifier calldata layout. ERC-1922 proposes a standardized zk-SNARK verifier interface; its existence does not mean a given verifier implements that API.
  4. Call the correct contract function. Depending on the implementation, the verifier may return a boolean or revert when verification fails. An application may call the verifier internally instead of exposing a standalone verification function. Check the function’s actual behavior and the application’s handling of a failed check.
  5. Check the application’s conditions around the proof. Determine whether the application binds the proof to the intended state, caller, domain, and replay-protection conditions. These safeguards are application-specific; a general verifier interface does not guarantee them.
  6. Confirm what a successful call changes. If verification is part of a state update, inspect the contract logic that consumes the result. A successful verifier call matters only if the application accepts the intended inputs and applies the intended transition.

How this works in a rollup

In ethereum.org’s rollup example, the contract checks that the proof’s pre-state root matches the state root it already stores. If the proof is valid and the required checks pass, the contract can accept the post-state root. This links proof acceptance to a particular state transition rather than treating a valid proof as an unrestricted authorization.

When assessing a specific rollup, trace the full path from proof verification to the stored state update. The important question is not only whether the verifier accepts the proof, but whether the contract checks the expected prior state and updates to the post-state represented by that proof.

Ethereum’s cryptographic building blocks

EIP-196 defines Ethereum precompiled contracts for addition and scalar multiplication on the alt_bn128 curve. EIP-197 defines a precompile for an optimal ate pairing check on that curve. Verifier contracts compatible with these operations can use them for cryptographic calculations.

These precompiles are not universal proof-system support. A verifier still needs to encode and check the proof and verification key correctly, and the proof system must be compatible with the verifier’s implementation and cryptographic assumptions.

How to assess what a successful result means

  • Verifier result: The proof passed the checks implemented for that verifier, key, and public inputs.
  • Application behavior: The application used the result under its own rules, including any state, caller, domain, and replay-protection checks.
  • Source verification: Published source and compiler settings reproduce the deployed bytecode. This is different from checking whether the circuit expresses the intended statement.
  • Formal verification: An analysis of whether contract behavior satisfies specified properties. It is not the same as verifying an individual proof, nor does the label alone show that a circuit captures the intended real-world claim.

These checks answer different questions. A source match does not prove the circuit constraints are sound, and proof acceptance does not show that the application’s statement is meaningful or correctly tied to its intended use.

Gas, ABI, and what cannot be generalized

The call’s exact ABI encoding and gas use depend on the verifier, application, proof system, and target chain. Ethereum.org gives a broad estimate for rollup proof verification, but it is not a dependable quote for an arbitrary verifier call. For a real transaction, use the target deployment’s ABI and estimate gas against the actual chain and call data.
