Gemma 4 is a reasonable candidate for summarizing agent activity locally, but the available official evidence does not establish it as the best model for that job. Google documents general text summarization support and lists several sizes with context windows up to 256K tokens. To choose well, compare Gemma 4 with other models on the same activity traces and measure summary accuracy, latency, and memory use on your hardware.
What the evidence says about Gemma 4
Google’s Gemma 4 model card explicitly lists text summarization as a supported use: generating concise summaries of text corpora, research papers, or reports (Gemma 4 model card). That establishes a documented general capability, not measured accuracy on agent logs.
Google describes Gemma 4 as supporting function calling and autonomous agent workflows. Its published results on the τ2-bench retail benchmark concern agentic tool use, not the quality of summaries made from an agent’s activity history. For example, Google DeepMind reports 86.4% for Gemma 4 31B IT Thinking and 85.5% for Gemma 4 26B A4B IT Thinking on that benchmark; neither score indicates how faithfully those models summarize traces (Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 overview).
The key distinction is between a model’s ability to act with tools and its ability to accurately recount what happened. A useful activity summary must retain consequential events, identify which agent or tool performed each action, separate observed facts from inference, and preserve unresolved work. General capability claims and agentic benchmark scores do not test those requirements directly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which Gemma 4 variants are worth comparing?
Google lists five Gemma 4 variants. The E2B and E4B labels refer to effective parameter counts; their total parameter counts, including embeddings, are higher. The context and approximate Q4_0 inference memory figures below are from Google’s 2026 documentation. Memory is an estimate for inference, not a guarantee of total system memory, and actual needs vary with the inference tool and environment (Gemma 4 model overview).
| Variant | Listed context window | Approximate Q4_0 inference memory | Why include it in a trace test? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemma 4 E2B | 128K tokens | 2.9 GB | A compact candidate when local resource use and responsiveness matter. |
| Gemma 4 E4B | 128K tokens | 4.5 GB | A small-model comparison point; check whether its summaries retain key events and attribution. |
| Gemma 4 12B Unified | 256K tokens | 6.7 GB | A middle-size option for longer traces; measure actual memory with your chosen backend and prompt. |
| Gemma 4 26B A4B | 256K tokens | 14.4 GB | A larger candidate if your machine can run it; check whether any quality improvement justifies the extra resources. |
| Gemma 4 31B | 256K tokens | 17.5 GB | The largest listed variant; test it against smaller options rather than assuming size guarantees better trace summaries. |
Google’s overview says that higher parameter counts and greater bit precision generally bring more capability at higher processing, memory, and power cost; smaller or lower-precision versions may be sufficient for a particular task. Treat the table as a starting point for feasibility, then measure the actual workload. Context capacity alone does not establish that a model will summarize a long trace accurately.

How Gemma 4 compares with other local models
Google’s performance comparison includes Gemma 3 27B and external models such as Qwen 3.5, gpt-oss, Mistral Large, DeepSeek, GLM, and Kimi (Google DeepMind’s comparison). These are potential candidates for a comparison, not proven winners for agent-history summarization. The comparison covers multiple capabilities rather than a direct, controlled test of faithful trace summaries.
- Start with a Gemma 4 size your machine can run. E2B, E4B, or 12B can serve as practical starting points when memory is constrained; include 26B A4B or 31B if your hardware and runtime support them.
- Add alternatives only when they are genuinely usable locally. Confirm compatible model weights and inference support for your setup before comparing another model. A model appearing in a performance comparison does not establish that its local deployment fits your hardware.
- Let trace quality decide. General reasoning, coding, and tool-use scores can help build a shortlist, but they cannot replace a test of factual coverage, attribution, omissions, and invented events.
How to run a fair agent-activity summary test
Use a small, fixed set of representative traces. Include known events, decisions, tool calls, failures, and unresolved items so you can check the output against what actually happened. The following is a proposed evaluation method, not a published benchmark.

- Prepare the traces. Choose examples that reflect your real activity histories, including both routine work and cases with important failures or open tasks. Keep a record of the consequential facts and who performed each action.
- Give every model the same task. Use identical input traces and instructions, output limits, and sampling settings wherever possible. Specify the intended audience and ask the model to distinguish recorded events from uncertainty or inference.
- Score the summaries. Check whether each output preserves important events and decisions, attributes actions to the correct agent, retains unresolved work, and avoids invented events. Also record output length and whether the summary is useful for the reader’s actual purpose.
- Measure the run. Record elapsed time and peak memory alongside the model version, quantization, backend, context settings, and hardware. If you cannot hold backend or hardware constant, report the difference so it is not mistaken for a model-quality advantage.
- Test long histories separately. A large advertised context window does not guarantee reliable handling of every long trace. If a history requires chunking or hierarchical summarization, check whether the intermediate summaries drop or distort events before they reach the final summary.
Choose the smallest model that meets your quality bar within acceptable latency and resource limits. A larger variant is worth its cost only if the same-trace evaluation shows a meaningful improvement for your workload.

Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement says Gemma 4 12B is encoder-free and can run locally on consumer laptops with 16 GB of RAM (Google’s Gemma 4 12B announcement). This is Google’s launch positioning, not a guarantee that every backend, quantization, context length, or concurrent workload will fit in that amount of memory. Use the approximate inference figures as planning guidance and verify the complete workload on your own system.
