A date picker can show a new selection in the browser before Livewire has synchronized it to the server. In Livewire 4, plain wire:model usually syncs when an action runs; choose a modifier such as .live, .blur, or .change if the server needs the value earlier. In Laravel, validate the submitted value in the save action before persisting it.

Why a selected date may not immediately change Livewire state

There are two states to distinguish: the value currently displayed by the browser control and the value held by the Livewire component on the server. A user can choose a date and see it in the input while the server-side property remains unchanged until synchronization occurs.

In Livewire 4, plain wire:model normally defers synchronization until an action is performed, such as submitting a form. This behavior reduces update requests; it does not mean the binding is broken. For the documented explanation of this behavior, see Livewire’s wire:model documentation.

Binding When it synchronizes Use it when
wire:model Normally when a Livewire action is performed The value only needs to reach the server for an action such as form submission.
wire:model.live As the value changes, with a default 150 ms debounce The server must react while the user is editing, for example to provide live feedback.
wire:model.blur When the control loses focus Feedback is useful after the user leaves the date field rather than during editing.
wire:model.change When the control’s change event fires Synchronization should follow a change event rather than waiting for a later action.

Earlier synchronization can trigger more network requests. Pick the timing that matches the interaction instead of adding .live by default.

Bind a native date input

A native HTML date control is the simplest option: bind it directly to a public Livewire property. Its displayed date value is normally represented as YYYY-MM-DD, which also makes a strict format rule practical.

<?php

use LivewireAttributesValidate;
use LivewireComponent;

class BookingForm extends Component
{
    #[Validate('required|date_format:Y-m-d')]
    public $startDate = '';

    public function save()
    {
        $validated = $this->validate();
        // Persist $validated only after validation succeeds.
    }
}
<form wire:submit="save">
    <input type="date" wire:model="startDate">
    @error('startDate') <span>{{ $message }}</span> @enderror
    <button type="submit">Save</button>
</form>

With this plain binding, the user can select a date and the property is synchronized when the form’s save action runs. The action calls $this->validate() and should use the validated result—not unvalidated submitted values—for persistence.

Validate the value and any date constraints

Livewire 4’s #[Validate] attribute validates a property when it updates by default. For validation only when the save flow explicitly calls $this->validate(), disable automatic update validation with onUpdate: false.

#[Validate('required|date_format:Y-m-d', onUpdate: false)]
public $startDate = '';

Laravel 12 documents date and date_format as alternatives and advises using one rather than both. The general date rule accepts valid non-relative dates under PHP’s strtotime; date_format checks a specified representation. For a strict Y-m-d value, Laravel also documents this rule form:

use IlluminateValidationRule;

' startDate' => ['required', Rule::date()->format('Y-m-d')],

Remove the leading space before startDate if copying the array key: it should be 'startDate'. Laravel’s date validation rules also include after, before, and after_or_equal for business constraints such as requiring a booking date not to precede another date. Do not apply format and comparison rules without considering what values the application accepts.

See the Laravel 12 date validation documentation for the documented rule behavior and formats.

Build a reusable Livewire date-picker component

If the input is wrapped in a child component, Livewire’s #[Modelable] attribute exposes one child property for binding from its parent. Bind the child’s internal input to that property, and use a wrapper element as the component root so the parent binding can be injected there.

<?php

use LivewireAttributesModelable;
use LivewireComponent;

class DatePicker extends Component
{
    #[Modelable]
    public $value = '';

    public function render()
    {
        return view('livewire.date-picker');
    }
}
<div>
    <input type="date" wire:model="value">
</div>

Use the child from a parent with <livewire:date-picker wire:model="startDate" />. The wrapper matters: do not make the root itself a form control carrying wire:model, because the parent’s binding is injected on the root. A component currently supports only one modelable property; Livewire states, “Currently Livewire only supports a single #[Modelable] attribute per component, so only the first one will be bound.” See Livewire’s child data binding documentation.

Integrate a JavaScript date picker carefully

A JavaScript picker can provide a different interface from the browser’s native date control, but initializing the widget is not enough: its selected date must also be propagated into the Livewire-bound value. Livewire’s JavaScript guide demonstrates loading Pikaday with @assets and locating a component element through $wire.$el; that initialization example alone does not establish complete value synchronization.

When adopting a JavaScript picker, verify that choosing a date updates the property used by the component and that the resulting value matches the format expected by Laravel validation. The official Livewire asset-loading documentation covers the asset-loading example, but the integration still needs its own change-to-state connection.

Check version compatibility before copying examples

The behavior and syntax described here follow the official Livewire 4.x and Laravel 12.x documentation available on October 4, 2026. If a project uses different major versions, check the documentation for those installed versions before relying on the same APIs or defaults.
