A collateralized crypto loan lets you keep borrowed assets beyond a single transaction, but you must supply collateral, pay interest while the debt remains open, and manage liquidation risk. They solve different problems; a flash loan is not a way to borrow spending money without collateral.
Here, “traditional crypto loan” means an ongoing, collateral-backed on-chain loan. Centralized lenders may use different terms and custody arrangements, so this comparison does not describe every crypto lending product.
How the two loan types compare
| Question | Flash loan | Collateralized crypto loan |
|---|---|---|
| How long can you keep the funds? | Until the end of the same transaction; repayment plus the required fee must be included in that transaction. Aave’s glossary and Pool documentation describe this requirement. | Across transactions, while the debt remains open and the position meets the protocol’s collateral requirements. Aave’s V3 overview |
| Is collateral required? | No collateral for the flash-loan mechanism itself. | Yes. Supplied collateral secures the outstanding debt. Aave’s borrowing guide |
| How is the borrowing charged? | A protocol fee and transaction costs such as gas; the fee and terms depend on the protocol and transaction. | Interest accrues on the open debt. Rates can change with pool utilization, and transactions may also involve gas or swap fees. Aave’s V3 overview and app disclosures |
| Main exposure | The transaction must execute and repay atomically; contract, oracle, network, and execution risks remain. | Collateral-price movements, accruing interest, and liquidation risk continue for as long as the loan is open. Aave’s risk documentation |
| Typical fit | A smart-contract operation whose full sequence, including repayment, can complete in one transaction. | A borrower who needs to hold borrowed assets longer and can provide and monitor adequate collateral. |
These are mechanism-level differences, not guarantees about every lending service. Supported assets, available liquidity, fees, and risk parameters depend on the protocol, network, reserve, and current configuration.
How a flash loan works
A flash loan is executed as part of a smart-contract transaction rather than opened as a debt balance to repay later. The contract obtains assets from a pool, carries out the specified actions, then must return the borrowed amount plus the required fee before the transaction ends. Aave describes the operation as access to pool liquidity within one transaction, with repayment of the amount plus a fee required; its Pool documentation says the relevant no-debt operation reverts if repayment is not completed. Because the steps are atomic, a successful operation does not leave that flash-loan debt open after execution. But “no collateral” does not mean “no risk” or “free money”: the strategy still depends on the contract logic, available pool liquidity, market data where relevant, and a transaction sequence that works at the time it is submitted.
What atomicity means in practice
- The transaction needs a complete plan: borrowing, the intended operation, and repayment.
- If the required repayment cannot be made within the transaction, the relevant Aave no-debt operation reverts instead of becoming an ordinary open loan.
- Gas and other execution costs still matter, and a failed strategy does not become profitable merely because it had no collateral requirement.
Flash loans have had version-specific mechanics. A March 2025 Bank of Canada paper on flash loans describes historical Aave V2 cases in which a flash-loan operation could roll over into a standard collateralized loan. That is a historical, version-specific detail—not a general feature to assume for current flash loans.

How an ongoing collateralized loan works
For an open on-chain loan, you supply assets as collateral and borrow against them. The debt persists beyond the transaction that created it, and interest accrues while it remains outstanding. In Aave, borrowed balances are represented by debt tokens, and borrowing rates respond to reserve utilization; rates may rise more quickly once utilization passes the model’s optimal point. The applicable rate and parameters are reserve-specific, not one fixed rate for all borrowers. Aave V3 overview
Aave also tracks a position’s health factor. If it falls below 1, the position becomes eligible for liquidation. That threshold describes Aave’s documented mechanism; collateral requirements and liquidation parameters can differ across protocols and assets. Aave glossary

What to check before borrowing
- Whether the asset and network you need are supported, and whether the pool has enough unborrowed liquidity. Aave notes suppliers can withdraw only when sufficient unborrowed liquidity is available. Aave V3 overview
- The collateral and borrowing parameters for the specific reserve, including how the position’s health is affected by market movements.
- The current borrowing rate and how utilization can change it while your debt is open.
- How you will monitor the position and respond if collateral value falls or the debt becomes more expensive.
Aave’s borrowing guide explains its collateral and position-monitoring process. Availability and parameters can change, so check the relevant protocol interface and network before acting.
Costs: a fee versus carrying interest over time
The cost models are different, so there is no reliable single number that compares “the flash-loan rate” with “the crypto-loan APR.” A flash-loan transaction may incur a protocol fee plus gas. An ongoing loan accrues interest for as long as the debt remains open, with rates that can move as pool utilization changes; using swaps or making additional transactions can add costs. Aave’s disclosures identify gas and swap fees, while its overview describes utilization-sensitive borrowing rates. Aave app disclosures · Aave V3 overview

Neither the documentation nor the mechanics establish one universal current fee, APR, or liquidation parameter across protocols. Any useful numerical comparison has to specify the protocol and deployment, network, asset, route, date, and gas assumptions. Check current interface or contract parameters rather than relying on a fee figure from an older article or a different version.

Flash-loan risks
- Atomic execution failure: The entire sequence has to work and repay in one transaction. A strategy that cannot complete at execution time cannot leave the loan open for later repayment.
- Smart-contract and oracle exposure: A flaw in a contract or incorrect price information can undermine an operation that depends on them.
- Network and liquidity constraints: Congestion, network problems, limited pool liquidity, or other execution conditions can prevent the intended sequence from working as planned.
These risks are not eliminated by the absence of a continuing collateral position. Aave’s risk documentation discusses oracle, network, and bridge risks as well as collateral and liquidity risks.

Collateralized-loan risks
- Liquidation: A fall in collateral value can weaken the position; on Aave, a health factor below 1 makes it eligible for liquidation.
- Interest changes: Utilization-sensitive rates can change while the loan is open, affecting the cost of carrying debt.
- Oracle, network, and bridge problems: Aave identifies incorrect valuations from oracle failure or compromise, as well as network congestion, censorship, and security vulnerabilities, among its risks. Aave risk documentation
- Bad debt: Aave’s disclosures warn that collateral can fall faster than liquidation can occur, or that borrowers may fail to repay, potentially leaving bad debt. Aave app disclosures
Which one fits your use case?
Consider a flash loan when
- You are building or using a smart-contract operation that needs temporary liquidity for a sequence that can finish and repay within one transaction.
- You understand the transaction’s execution path, fees, dependencies, and failure conditions.
- The needed assets are available from the relevant pool at the time of execution.
Examples are atomic protocol operations that compose liquidity actions or execute another strategy only when its full sequence, including repayment, can be completed in one transaction. This is a technical execution pattern, not a dependable way to obtain funds for ordinary expenses.
Consider a collateralized loan when
- You need to keep borrowed assets beyond one transaction.
- You have eligible collateral and can accept both the interest cost and the possibility that market changes make the position vulnerable to liquidation.
- You can monitor the debt, collateral, and changing borrowing conditions for the duration of the loan.
If you need to hold borrowed funds for days, weeks, or longer, the flash loan’s same-transaction repayment condition rules it out; an open borrowing position is the relevant model, subject to its collateral and monitoring requirements.
