If Audible won’t sync your listening position, won’t start a book, skips chapters, or stops when your screen locks, start with the symptom-specific checks below. Confirm you’re using the same Amazon/Audible account on each device, then check connection, playback settings, and the title’s download. Audible’s own guidance says listening position syncs automatically; its recommended reset is to switch Sync listening position off and back on in the app’s Player settings.
Audible listening progress is not syncing between devices
Audible says its app automatically syncs your listening position across devices. First verify that each device is signed into the same Amazon/Audible account and that sync is enabled in the app. In the iOS or Android app, open Profile > Settings (gear) > Player, then check Sync listening position. If it is already on, turn it off and back on. Audible’s instructions for listening in the app describe this reset.
If the position still differs, play the title in Audible Cloud Player or on another compatible device. If the position matches on one device but not another, that comparison helps narrow the issue to a particular app or device, but does not establish the cause by itself. Audible also recommends Cloud Player or another Audible-ready device as a check when a title will not play. See Audible’s playback and audio-quality guidance.
Audible won’t play a title or shows a playback error
Check that the device has an active internet connection, is not in Airplane mode, and is allowed to stream over the network you are using. A downloaded title can help distinguish a streaming problem from a broader playback problem. Then use the displayed code to choose a relevant fix rather than trying every remedy. Audible’s error-code guide lists these meanings:

| Error code | What it indicates | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| IP-1 / AP-1 | Authentication issue | Retry playback. If it continues, sign out and back in. |
| IP-2 / AP-2 | No network connection | Reconnect to a network and check that Airplane mode is off. |
| IP-4 / AP-4 | Streaming is restricted | Use Wi-Fi or allow cellular streaming in settings. |
| IP-8 / AP-8 | Title is not eligible | Confirm the title is in your Library and that the account has access to it. |
| IP-9 / AP-9 | Requester is not available | Check membership status. |
| IP-10 / AP-10 | Regional availability issue | Check which marketplace you are using. |
| IP-12 / AP-12 | AirPlay device does not support the audio format | Try playback on the phone or another compatible device. |
| IP-4562 / AP-4562 | Decoding problem | Try a different download quality or stream the title instead. |
If no code appears or the error persists, try the title in Cloud Player or on another Audible-ready device. This comparison can show whether the failure is limited to one playback setup, but it is not a definitive diagnosis.
Audible skips chapters, seems incomplete, or has static
Skipped chapters or missing content
An incomplete download may cause chapters to skip or content to be missing. In your Library, open the title’s three-dot menu, remove the download, and download the title again. Audible says playback should resume at the position where you left off. Its title playback guidance covers this remedy.

Poor sound, static, or background noise
Change the download quality under Profile > Settings > Data & Storage. Choose Standard or High, remove the existing download, and download it again. Changing quality may resolve audio problems; higher quality is not a guaranteed fix.
Audible stops when the screen locks or another app opens
On some Samsung or Pixel Android devices, battery settings can restrict Audible in the background. Open Device Settings > Apps > Audible > Battery and choose Unrestricted, if that option is available. Unrestricted background activity may use more battery. If battery drain is excessive, Audible also advises making sure the app is updated. Audible’s playback troubleshooting page provides this device-specific guidance.

The Audible app crashes or loads slowly
- Force-close the Audible app, reopen it, and check for an app update.
- On Android, clear the app’s cache and storage.
- If those steps do not help, consider reinstalling the app. Audible warns that uninstalling removes downloaded titles and titles marked Finished. You can download titles again and mark them Finished again after reinstalling.
These steps are from Audible’s app-crash guidance. Because reinstalling removes local downloads, leave it until simpler steps have failed.

- One title only: Check Library access and title eligibility, then remove and redownload it if it is incomplete or skips.
- All titles on one device: Check network permissions, app settings, updates, battery restrictions, and device compatibility.
- Streaming fails but downloads play: Focus on connection, Airplane mode, and streaming restrictions such as cellular-data settings.
- The same title fails across devices: Check account access, membership, regional marketplace, and the title’s availability.
- Only one device has the wrong position: Confirm the same account and the sync setting on that device, then use the sync toggle reset.
For download-specific errors, Audible also maintains a separate download error troubleshooting page.
