On Android, Chrome is the browser interface that offers to save and fill passwords; Google Password Manager is Google’s service for storing and managing passwords and passkeys. They are connected parts of Google’s system, not necessarily two separate vaults. The key distinction is where a credential is stored—on the device or in a Google Account—and which autofill service Chrome is set to use.
How Chrome and Google Password Manager differ
Chrome handles the browser workflow: it can offer to save a password for a website and fill saved credentials when you return. Google Password Manager is the credential service that manages Google-saved passwords and passkeys. You can reach it through Chrome, Android, or the web; its credentials can also work in supported apps and on supported devices signed into the same Google Account. Google’s Chrome autofill instructions and Password Manager overview describe these connected roles.

Where your passwords are saved—and when they sync
A password saved while you are signed into Chrome may be saved to your Google Account, making it available on other supported devices when you sign into that account. If you are not signed into Chrome, it can instead be saved locally on that device. A local-only password is not in your Google Account vault, so do not assume it will appear on another device. If you use more than one Google Account on an Android device, an app may ask which account should receive a saved password. The account used for saving matters when you expect that credential to be available elsewhere; see Google’s instructions on using passwords and passkeys across devices.

Choose which autofill service Chrome uses
Android Chrome can route autofill to Google or to another autofill service added in Android settings. The alternate provider must be configured on the device first. To change the choice:
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings > Autofill services.
- Select Autofill with Google or Autofill using another service.
- Confirm the prompt to restart Chrome so the change takes effect.
Google notes that an administrator may control this choice in work or school Chrome. Menu wording can also vary with Chrome and Android versions, device configuration, or management policy. The steps above are the documented Android route in Google’s autofill instructions.

Manage Google passwords and passkeys
For Google-saved credentials, open Google Password Manager from Chrome or Android settings, or visit passwords.google.com for credentials saved to your account. The Android Passwords app is an access point to Password Manager, not evidence of a second, separate Google vault. Google describes Password Manager and its access options in its Android getting-started guide.
Passkeys have additional Android requirements: Google’s current instructions specify Android 9.0 or later and a screen lock. Android uses the device’s screen lock to access passkeys. Google says saved passkeys are backed up and synced across Android devices; on a new device, recovery requires signing into the account and verifying with the lost device’s lock credential. Consult Google’s passkey instructions for the documented setup and recovery details.

When another password manager makes sense
Choose a different autofill provider if you already use a manager and want it to fill credentials in Chrome on Android. Before switching, check that the provider covers the apps and browsers you use, supports the passkey features you need, and is available on your other devices. Also check whether you can change Android’s autofill setting yourself or whether an organization manages it. Chrome permits a non-Google provider, but the choice is about which service supplies autofill—not a need to maintain two Google vaults.
