The main candidate is a Josephson field-effect transistor, or JoFET. It is a developing technology, not a standard component in today’s quantum computers.
What is a superconducting transistor?
In this context, “superconducting transistor” usually means a gated Josephson device, particularly a JoFET. It is not an ordinary silicon transistor that happens to operate at a low temperature. A JoFET has superconducting contacts separated by a semiconductor channel; applying a voltage to a gate can change the channel’s superconducting response and therefore the junction’s behavior. Imperial College London’s JoFET overview describes this approach.
The distinction matters because superconducting quantum computers already use Josephson junctions. A conventional junction provides a nonlinear circuit element that helps create the microwave energy levels used to encode a qubit. A JoFET is a proposed variation that adds gate-voltage control to that junction element, rather than a wholly new kind of quantum computer.
How could a JoFET help a quantum computer?
Voltage tuning within a qubit circuit
Designers can use electric fields to adjust a gated junction’s response. That offers a possible local voltage-control method alongside approaches that rely on current or magnetic flux. It could let a circuit’s properties be adjusted through a gate rather than by changing the surrounding magnetic field or current bias.

A related example is the gatemon: a superconducting qubit whose Josephson junction is made with semiconductor material and can be tuned by voltage. The University of Copenhagen’s overview of superconducting qubits discusses semiconductor-based approaches and their potential connection to CMOS control technology. “Gatemon” and “JoFET” are related concepts, but they are not interchangeable names for every device: not every gatemon is called a transistor, and most superconducting qubits do not use a gated junction.
Cryogenic control and readout circuitry
A JoFET or related superconducting circuit could also sit outside the qubit itself, in the electronics that generate, route, amplify, or read microwave signals. This peripheral role addresses a practical scaling problem: control and readout systems have to connect to many qubits while operating within the constraints of a cryogenic environment.

Quantum hardware is not the same as superconducting digital logic
“Superconducting computing” can refer to two different things. A gated junction may be part of a quantum circuit, where the circuit’s energy levels are used to form qubits. Separately, Josephson junctions can switch pulses in classical superconducting digital circuits, including single-flux-quantum (SFQ) logic. SFQ circuits are not quantum processors: their operation does not depend on qubits running a quantum algorithm.
NIST’s Flux Quantum Electronics page describes SFQ circuits as potentially capable of clock rates well above 100 GHz with low dissipation, while making their competitiveness conditional on resolving component issues. That figure concerns a separate digital-logic context; it is not a speed result for JoFET-based quantum computers.

Those aims should not be mistaken for a measured system-level advantage. The cited sources do not establish that a JoFET-based quantum computer uses less total energy or outperforms an established control stack. They also do not show that JoFETs are standard hardware in large-scale quantum computers.
Where the technology stands
JoFETs are best understood as a developing device and circuit direction. Public project descriptions include proposed modules, validation goals, and prototype scope; they do not establish widespread deployment or a mature, generally available JoFET quantum-computing platform. A voltage-tunable Josephson junction is a plausible circuit option, while cryogenic signal-management electronics are a distinct potential application around the qubits.
For background on the established role of Josephson junctions in superconducting circuits, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s 2007 educational chapter, “Quantum Computing Using Integrated Josephson Junction Circuits”, provides historical context; it is not evidence of current JoFET deployment.
