If your openSUSE Leap system uses the transactional, read-only-root role, manage software with transactional-update, not ordinary YaST or direct Zypper software changes. First identify your Leap release and system role: not every Leap installation is immutable, and the right fix depends on which package-management path your system uses.

Identify your Leap release and system role first

The instructions here distinguish ordinary Leap from the transactional system role described in the openSUSE Leap 15.6 Release Notes. In transactional mode, the root filesystem is read-only and package changes are made to a system snapshot rather than written immediately to the running system. The release notes say to use transactional-update instead of YaST and Zypper for all software management in that role.

Before trying a fix, record your Leap release, whether the system is configured for the transactional/read-only-root role, the command you ran, and its complete output. These commands and rollback steps are documented for Leap 15.6; if you use another release, check that release’s documentation and local configuration before applying them.

Install, remove, or update software in transactional mode

For the transactional role documented in Leap 15.6, use these commands, replacing PACKAGE_NAME with the exact package name available for your release and configured repositories:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • sudo transactional-update up updates the system using the regular-release update method.
  • sudo transactional-update pkg in PACKAGE_NAME installs a package.
  • sudo transactional-update pkg rm PACKAGE_NAME removes a package.

A package change targets a system snapshot. Follow the system’s boot or reboot notification to activate the changed state; do not assume the new package is available in the currently running system immediately. Reboot behavior depends on configuration: the Leap 16.0 transactional-update.conf(5) manual describes configurable methods, including automatic behavior that can use rebootmgr or fall back to systemd, and a none setting that leaves rebooting to the operator. Check your local setting rather than assuming the machine will restart automatically.

Fix “filesystem is read-only” or an unsuitable package-management command

A read-only-root message is consistent with transactional mode: ordinary tools expect to write changes immediately, while this role applies software changes through transactions. In Leap 15.6 transactional mode, do not use YaST or direct Zypper software management as a workaround. The release notes explicitly instruct users of this role to use transactional-update instead.

If you did not intend to use a transactional system, verify the installed release and system role before changing configuration or trying to remount the root filesystem. The existence of a read-only-root procedure in the Leap documentation does not mean every Leap installation has that setup.

Troubleshoot “package not found” and repository errors

A package lookup failure does not by itself prove that repository metadata is stale. Check whether the package exists for your Leap release, whether an enabled repository provides it, whether the repository is compatible with that release, and whether the system can reach the repository. The Leap reference also cautions that repository version strings and third-party support need checking during release upgrades.

For an ordinary Zypper-managed Leap system

If the package is expected from a configured repository, the openSUSE Leap reference recommends refreshing repository metadata:

  1. Run sudo zypper refresh.
  2. If that does not resolve a metadata-related lookup problem, run sudo zypper refresh -fdb to force a complete refresh and rebuild, including raw metadata.
  3. Check enabled repositories, release compatibility, connectivity, and whether the package is actually supplied by one of them.

Use these Zypper refresh instructions for an ordinary Zypper setup. If the machine is in transactional mode, use that role’s supported software-management workflow instead of mixing in ordinary-root package instructions.

For transactional mode

Use transactional-update pkg in PACKAGE_NAME for an installation, after confirming the exact package name and repository availability. The cited documentation does not establish that every package is available for every Leap release, nor does a refresh fix every error. Match the remedy to the message: a missing package, unavailable repository, network failure, or signature warning can have different causes.

Use the right update method for Leap

Do not switch to dup just because an update failed. The Leap 16.0 transactional-update configuration manual distinguishes up, which uses zypper up and is intended for regular releases such as Leap, from dup, intended for rolling distributions such as Tumbleweed. Confirm your installed release and local configuration if the update method or behavior differs from the documented default.

Undo a failed transactional update

The openSUSE Leap 15.6 Release Notes document transactional-update rollback for reverting the last snapshot. The system should first be booted into the next-to-last snapshot; you can optionally provide a snapshot ID. Use this as a rollback for a failed transactional change, not as a general fix for every package or repository error.

On an ordinary Leap installation using Btrfs and Snapper, snapshot recovery is a related but distinct workflow. The Leap reference discusses Zypper-created snapshots around filesystem changes; use the Snapper procedure appropriate to that installation rather than treating it as interchangeable with transactional-update rollback.

Handle signing-key warnings without weakening trust

Do not automatically trust an unfamiliar repository signing key to get past an installation or update warning. The Leap 16.0 transactional-update manual says automatic key import for new repositories is disabled by default for security reasons. Verify the repository’s identity and the key’s provenance before deciding whether to trust it.

When the documented fixes do not explain the error

The available Leap references do not provide an exhaustive diagnosis for every dependency conflict, network error, signature problem, full disk, package lock, or broken repository. Preserve the complete command output and gather the exact Leap release, system role, enabled repositories, and command attempted. That evidence is needed to distinguish a package-management-path issue from a repository or transaction failure; avoid attributing the cause to stale metadata unless the error supports that diagnosis.
