Google promises Pixel 8 and later seven years of operating-system and security updates; Samsung says selected Galaxy devices can receive up to seven years of security updates; and Apple’s published history shows long iOS support without a fixed forward-looking term for every iPhone. The useful comparison is the exact model’s remaining support window—not the largest number attached to a brand.
What “software updates” means
Phone support is not one type of update. Separate these categories when checking how long a device will remain current and protected:
- Major OS upgrades: move a phone to a newer Android or iOS version and may add features or change the interface.
- Security updates: address vulnerabilities. They can continue after a phone is no longer eligible for the newest major OS.
- Feature drops and supplemental updates: deliver features or fixes without necessarily being a major OS-version upgrade.
Google’s Pixel commitment explicitly covers OS and security updates and may include features through Pixel Drops. Apple distinguishes minor updates from major upgrades in its deployment guidance and notes that hardware limits can make older devices ineligible for an upgrade. Published support windows by manufacturer
| Manufacturer and devices | Published update coverage | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | 7 years of OS and security updates | Counted from each model’s first availability on the US Google Store; buying later does not restart the clock. Google says Pixel Drops may also bring new or upgraded features. Google support policy. |
| Listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 family devices | 5 years of OS and security updates | Google lists these separately from Pixel 8 and later. Check the page for the exact device and its first-availability date. Google support policy. |
| Selected Samsung Galaxy devices | Up to 7 years of security updates, under Samsung’s policy wording as of January 2024 | “Up to” is not a promise that every Galaxy model gets seven years. Samsung assigns eligible devices monthly, quarterly, or biannual patch schedules. Samsung Mobile Security scope. |
| Apple iPhones | No single universal future term stated in the reviewed Apple sources; the company reported OS feature-update support as far back as 6 years from original release | This is historical company-reported experience, not a guarantee for every future iPhone. Google Pixel: seven years for Pixel 8 and later
Google’s current support page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, measured from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. It separately lists five years for Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and named variants. These are durations from the support start date, not a fresh seven- or five-year period for every buyer.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Google announced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro commitment on October 4, 2023, describing it as seven years of software support that includes Android OS upgrades, security updates, and regular Feature Drops. For a particular phone, confirm that it is covered by the current support page and work out how much of its window remains. Google’s Pixel 8 announcement.
Samsung Galaxy: “up to” seven years, depending on the model
Samsung’s security page says that, as of January 2024, Galaxy devices can receive up to seven years of security update support. The phrase “up to” matters: eligibility varies, and the page uses monthly, quarterly, and biannual schedules for selected devices. Its patches address Android OS-related and Samsung-specific security issues. Check the exact model’s current listing rather than assuming the longest term or a monthly cadence applies.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Samsung’s older policy announcement from February 9, 2022 offered selected Galaxy devices up to four Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. That is historical context, not a rule to apply to every Samsung phone now. Samsung’s 2022 announcement.
iPhone: long support history, but no universal promised term
Apple’s June 2024 environmental report says its observed OS feature-update support reached as far back as six years from a device’s original release. It noted that iOS 17 supported iPhone models introduced since 2018. The same report cited a March 2024 iOS 15 update covering the iPhone 6s, introduced in 2015. Those examples describe Apple’s record; they do not establish a fixed six-year commitment for every iPhone.

Apple’s security-release history also shows why the newest iOS compatibility list is not the same as the end of all security maintenance. The log lists iOS 26 for iPhone 11 and later in September 2026, and an iOS 15.8.6 security release for iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and first-generation iPhone SE on January 26, 2026. A past release confirms what Apple issued on that date, not a guaranteed schedule for future patches. Apple security releases.

- Identify the exact model and regional variant. Policies may cover selected devices, not an entire manufacturer’s lineup.
- Separate OS upgrades from security patches. A long security window does not necessarily mean the phone will receive the same number of major OS versions.
- Find the support start date. For Pixel support windows, Google uses first availability on the US Google Store; a later purchase does not reset that date.
- Calculate years remaining. Use the manufacturer’s stated duration and start date, rather than counting from when you buy the phone.
- Check patch cadence and current status. On Samsung, determine whether the specific phone is listed for monthly, quarterly, or biannual updates. For Apple, consult compatibility information and the dated security-release log.
Use the manufacturer’s current device listing and dated release history for the exact phone. A policy for one model—or an update issued to an older phone once—cannot establish a guarantee for every model. Google Pixel update policy; Samsung update schedules; Apple security-release history.
