Before the lecture, preview the topic and prepare questions
Check the syllabus, assigned reading, slides, or notes from the previous lecture so the material is not completely new when class begins. Write down likely key concepts and any questions or points of confusion you want to resolve. Memorial University suggests previewing briefly the night before as one possible approach; that is an example, not a required schedule (Memorial University, Note-taking essentials).
Set up a page or document with space to add questions, examples, and a short summary after class. The Cornell layout is one option, but paper, a tablet, or a computer can all work. Choose a medium that helps you stay engaged and suits your needs (Cornell Learning Strategies Center, Note Taking Strategies; Memorial University).
During class, capture meaning rather than every sentence
Listen for the lecture’s central point and the material that explains or supports it: definitions, worked examples, cause-and-effect links, comparisons, and points the instructor emphasizes. Write concise notes in your own words. Memorial University specifically advises against transcribing the instructor word for word, while Cornell describes the Cornell system’s lecture notes as “telegraphic sentences” (Memorial University; Cornell Note-taking System).

Use abbreviations consistently, and mark anything you need to revisit. Note questions, unclear explanations, links to other classes or readings, and whether information came from a slide, class activity, or instructor explanation. These markers help you identify what to clarify and where a detail came from when you return to the notes (Memorial University).
- Prioritize: the main idea and how supporting points relate to it.
- Record: examples, steps, formulas, and distinctions that help explain or apply the concept.
- Flag: questions and gaps instead of interrupting your notes to resolve every uncertainty.
Soon after class, turn rough notes into a study resource
While the lecture is still fresh, add details you remember, organize sections with headings, and connect the material to readings, slides, or earlier lessons. If a gap remains, comparing notes with a classmate may help. Then write potential exam questions and answers so your notes can be used for practice, not just reference (Memorial University).

If you use Cornell notes, add cue words or questions beside the lecture notes and write a brief summary. Cornell’s process also asks students to reflect on the material’s significance, principles, applications, and connections to other learning (Cornell Note-taking System).
Choose a format that fits the lecture and exam
No single note-taking format is right for every student or subject. Match the layout to the material and to the work the exam will ask you to do (Memorial University).

Review by retrieving information, not only rereading
Cover the main notes or use a blank page. Look at a cue or question, try to reconstruct the answer from memory, and only then check the notes and correct gaps. Cornell describes reciting answers from the cue column in your own words; Cornell’s study-strategy guidance defines retrieval practice as actively recalling information and putting it on paper, for example in writing, flow charts, diagrams, or graphs (Cornell Note-taking System; Cornell, Effective Study Strategies).
Return to the material in later sessions rather than relying only on one long review before the exam. Cornell describes spaced practice as studying at intervals and recommends it over cramming for learning and retention. Its Cornell notes page recommends spending at least ten minutes every week reviewing previous notes; treat that as Cornell’s guidance, not a universally optimal or experimentally established interval (Cornell, Effective Study Strategies; Cornell Note-taking System).

Retrieval can feel less fluent than rereading, but that effort is part of the practice. In an Associated Press report published September 30, 2026, cognitive psychologist Pooja K. Agarwal described the “desirable difficulty” of recall as helpful for long-term learning; the article is expert reporting, not a study statistic establishing a specific note-review schedule (Associated Press).

Notes and worked examples can help you understand a method, but they do not replace applying it. For calculation-heavy subjects, attempt practice problems and use formulas alongside reviewing your notes and examples, as Memorial University advises (Memorial University).
