OfferUp, Craigslist, and Nextdoor are alternatives to check when you want to sell nearby, but none is proven categorically safer than Facebook Marketplace. Their local audiences and safety features differ, and there are no comparative incident-rate figures here. Choose based on the buyers and transaction options available in your area, then use a careful meetup and payment routine on whichever service you pick.
Which local-selling alternatives are worth checking?
These services can help you reach local buyers, but platform guidance is not evidence that a service prevents scams or crime. Check whether each has active listings for similar items near you and how its messaging, reporting, and payment arrangements work before posting.

OfferUp
OfferUp is a direct option for local listings. Its safety guidance, updated August 31, 2026, recommends reviewing the other person’s profile, keeping arrangements in OfferUp messaging, and meeting at an official Community MeetUp Spot where available. It also advises refusing last-minute location changes, avoiding advance payment, and bringing someone along when possible. These are OfferUp’s recommendations, not independent proof that the service is safer. Read OfferUp’s meetup safety tips.

Cash does not guarantee a safe exchange or rule out counterfeit bills. OfferUp’s separate scam guidance, updated September 21, 2026, describes fake off-platform payment or verification links and requests for sensitive information. Its advice that legitimate links contain “offerup.com” is not a complete phishing test. Review OfferUp’s scam guidance.
#1 Best Overall
For in-person sales, OfferUp says buyers can inspect items at meetups and that a sale is final after money changes hands. Do not treat this as a refund guarantee or buyer protection. See OfferUp’s seller commitment.
Craigslist
Craigslist remains a local classified-listing option. Its safety guidance emphasizes meeting publicly, avoiding secluded locations and inviting strangers home, telling someone where you are going, and considering a companion. It urges particular care with high-value items. Its scam guidance warns against advance payment, gift cards, wire transfers, and sharing personal or financial information. These pages provide behavioral advice; they do not establish special meetup protections or comparative safety. Rank #2
Nextdoor
Nextdoor is another listing route to check for neighborhood buyers. Its help page, titled “Vender o regalar un artículo en Nextdoor” (“Sell or give away an item on Nextdoor”), establishes that an item-selling path exists, but does not establish particular safety protections or how active listings are in your neighborhood. Treat it as an option to investigate locally, not as a proven safer choice. Nextdoor item-selling help.

There is no evidence here to rank these services by safety or scam rates. Compare what you can verify for your item and location:
- Nearby buyers: Look for recent listings and activity for similar items in your own area. A service with no relevant local audience may not be useful, regardless of its features.
- Communication: Check whether you can arrange the sale without sharing your phone number, email, or home address, and whether the service encourages in-platform messaging.
- Meetup arrangements: See whether the platform offers a vetted public meetup point or only general advice. Confirm that any suggested location is actually available to you.
- Reporting: Find the route for reporting suspicious accounts, listings, or messages before you need it.
- Payment and handoff: Understand whether payment happens at the exchange and what the platform says about the chosen method. Do not assume a platform’s involvement means an in-person deal has refund protection.
- Category and reach: Consider whether local listings for your kind of item appear active enough to justify the effort.
Facebook’s Help Center also links to Marketplace topics about meetings, scams, ratings, and reporting. The existence of that guidance does not show that Facebook is less safe than any alternative. Browse Facebook Marketplace help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the same safety routine whichever service you choose
- Keep planning in the platform’s messaging system where possible. Do not share your phone number, email, home address, login details, or financial information just because a buyer asks.
- Choose a busy, well-lit public location or a meetup point you have verified. Tell someone you trust where and when you are meeting, and bring them if possible.
- Reject last-minute changes to a secluded or unfamiliar place. If the buyer insists on moving the meetup, cancel rather than following them.
- Inspect the item and settle payment at handoff. Do not accept advance payment as a condition of meeting, and stop if the buyer asks you to follow an unfamiliar payment or verification link.
- Stop the conversation if asked for a code or account access. Never provide a one-time verification code, password, or other login credential to complete a sale.
- Use the service’s reporting route if messages or payment requests appear suspicious.
OfferUp’s safety page also advises sellers not to disclose a phone number, email, or home address while arranging a meetup. Its warning about fake links is a reason to be cautious, not a substitute for independently checking where a link leads.
